John Abercrombie is a jazz guitarist born 16 December 1944 in Port Chester, NY - died 22 August 2017 in Cortland, NY. Ralph Towner is a multi-instrumentalist, born in Chehalis, Washington, on 1 March 1940. Both have a large catalog on ECM.

Franck Dervieux was a keyboardist from Quebec, starting in Jean-Pierre Ferland's band. Stricken with cancer, Dervieux summoned the strength to record his one solo release in 1972, backed with musicians that went on to form the group Contraction. Dervieux appeared on Contraction's debut LP (also 1972) but died shortly thereafter.

After the release of Soft Machine's Fourth, drummer Robert Wyatt departed the group and was replaced first by Phil Howard (for only 4 months), and then by John Marshall. This era took Soft Machine into a new jazzier direction. LBO is John Marshall's composition.
