Perfect for me to get myself to sleep tonight 🥰
stevie monthly p 11:07:41 PM
hey Paige & TAndy
stevie monthly p 11:08:14 PM
i use real bird calls on my phone for ringtones and alarms
Alan Pasnyk 11:09:59 PM
hello everyone! penguins are birds too! 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
stevie monthly p 11:12:21 PM
do birds outnumber humans on earth?
Paige (host) 11:13:42 PM
i love penguins!!
Paige (host) 11:13:53 PM
i think yes there are many birds
Alan Pasnyk 11:13:58 PM
stevie: a Crow would make a good wake up alarm...also Possibly outnumber us 'cause they're all over the place..
stevie monthly p 11:14:47 PM
Alan, there are crows in my neighborhood. I've tried the telepathic method ot make friends. Peanuts too. No dice.
stevie monthly p 11:15:18 PM
i would so love to have a crow pal, even at a distance.
Alan Pasnyk 11:15:28 PM
Catbird just now..
stevie monthly p 11:15:35 PM
just to say "hey" when we see each other
stevie monthly p 11:16:14 PM
the catbird that lived in my cherry tree didn't come back this year
Alan Pasnyk 11:16:47 PM
stevie: Crows are pack rats, they love to steal and hide jewelry if you have one for a pet..
stevie monthly p 11:16:52 PM
the catbird family was entertaining. always coming up with new songs. loudly. early in the morning
Alan Pasnyk 11:17:22 PM
Catbirds just Love birdbaths!
stevie monthly p 11:17:36 PM
Alan, i was hoping to just make friends with the crows that come to my back yard
Alan Pasnyk 11:17:46 PM
and yes I love their song, never the same
stevie monthly p 11:18:09 PM
i toss peanuts out to the crows... not expecting shiny loot in return.
stevie monthly p 11:18:55 PM
ya know, the bird population is down dramatically in my neighborhood this year
stevie monthly p 11:19:28 PM
a year or so ago, we had chickadees, sparrows, crows, cardinals, catbirds, and robins
stevie monthly p 11:19:54 PM
this year? i'm puzzled and worried.
Alan Pasnyk 11:20:45 PM
stevie: wow! not enough bugs? or brush? or access to standing watwr???
stevie monthly p 11:20:52 PM
this year... no doves, chickadees, catbirds, cardinals.. even just a sparse population of robins
stevie monthly p 11:21:20 PM
i think bugs, number one deficit.
stevie monthly p 11:21:55 PM
my stupid suburban neighbors all have chemlawn and similar shitzes spray their yards a few times a year
Alan Pasnyk 11:21:56 PM
North of Doylestown been pretty much the same here..
Ossy 11:22:25 PM
Hi Paige, cute nature bird sounds
stevie monthly p 11:22:28 PM
they have greeeeen grass and no dandelions
Alan Pasnyk 11:22:29 PM
stevie: maybe insecticides...
stevie monthly p 11:22:40 PM
and nothing friendly to bugs (bird food)
stevie monthly p 11:23:11 PM
yep. the chemlawn shit must destroy countless acres of insect larvae
Paige (host) 11:23:38 PM
light pollution hurts too :(
stevie monthly p 11:23:46 PM
i have about an acre, and i love it in the spring when it's the only open patch in my hood that is blanketed with dandelions
Ossy 11:24:39 PM
I occasionally see herons flying about
stevie monthly p 11:24:42 PM
i see bees and other bugs enjoying the flowers
Alan Pasnyk 11:24:50 PM
stevie: same here, also lots of clover this year, spring was dry..
stevie monthly p 11:25:21 PM
the chemlawns of the world are killing the food chain, from soil bacteria to birds
Alan Pasnyk 11:26:03 PM
Ossy: No herons, but lots of "Turkey Vultures" gliding around they are the best gliders in NE USA..
stevie monthly p 11:26:07 PM
remember lightning bugs? yeah, i think we saw about 3 during the whole summer
stevie monthly p 11:26:45 PM
the yards used to be alive with lightning bugs, all rising about the same time, just after sundown in june and july
Alan Pasnyk 11:27:17 PM
stevie: This is the Lightning Bug capital here, no insecticides or lawn treatment
Ossy 11:27:36 PM
Alan - Turkey Vultures, a common site and as well wild turkeys. I once saw an owl at night
Alan Pasnyk 11:28:26 PM
Ossy: Great Horned Owl? Their mating call is very relaxing
stevie monthly p 11:28:46 PM
Os, in the early 2000s, I had an office in the Barker Mill building in Gladwyne PA... in the same space the Boyz II Men studio occupied
stevie monthly p 11:29:28 PM
Blue herons would strut along the banks of Mill creek, which was shallow and fast, and BAM grab a trout and eat it on the short
stevie monthly p 11:29:33 PM
shore
stevie monthly p 11:30:50 PM
thinking about the low numbers of bugs and birds this year is freaking me out
Ossy 11:31:13 PM
Alan - I assume it could be a great horned owl, since it looked short. Couldn't further tell what type of owl it is, being dark outside and caught a glimpse of it in a street light
stevie monthly p 11:31:25 PM
we saw only about 3 lantern flies, happy that they are gone
Alan Pasnyk 11:32:01 PM
The most spectacular thing I saw looked like a rock with a tail falling at about 45 mph toward the ground then swooping up a rabbit or something! it was like Wow!
stevie monthly p 11:32:16 PM
but now, putting it all together, i'm more worried about the envionment in my local area than ever (conshohocken, pa)
Alan Pasnyk 11:32:43 PM
Squashed the last lanternfly yesterday
Alan Pasnyk 11:33:09 PM
penguin!!!
stevie monthly p 11:33:23 PM
did you have a normal number of lantern flies?
Ossy 11:33:29 PM
Stevie - Wow. Saw a heron one winter day years back in a Mt Laurel lake chilling with some geese, fishing for fishes. Saw another one in the deep Medford area
Alan Pasnyk 11:33:36 PM
March of the 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
stevie monthly p 11:34:30 PM
until that mill creek office, i had seen maybe 1 blue heron at a distance
Alan Pasnyk 11:35:02 PM
stevie: hardly any lanterns this year, too much brush gives numerous birds!
stevie monthly p 11:35:12 PM
the blue herons at mill creek were numerous, bold, and not afraid to be near people

stevie monthly p 11:36:05 PM
Alan, the realization and fear that just a few minutes came over me is that even the "pests" like lanernflies were missing this summer
Alan Pasnyk 11:36:15 PM
No herons here maybe because of very numerous Red Tailed Hawks...their call is Screeeeeee!
Ossy 11:36:41 PM
Stevie - People should take care around herons, especially their beaks and legs
Paige (host) 11:37:26 PM
goose portion of the show!!
Ossy 11:37:45 PM
Speaking of them, at Disney World long ago, saw a beautiful sanctuary of flamingos 💖💖💖
stevie monthly p 11:38:06 PM
Os, i give all wild aminals a wide berth.
stevie monthly p 11:38:26 PM
geese? i run away from before they see me
Alan Pasnyk 11:38:35 PM
Ossy: Looong time ago same here at Disney
Ossy 11:39:08 PM
One uncle of mine owned two ostriches of his family farm
Ossy 11:39:33 PM
Stevie - Don't freak with swans, they're so scary!!
Alan Pasnyk 11:39:35 PM
stevie: Beware of turkeys, they are very bad with claws, no kidding!
stevie monthly p 11:40:03 PM
in the small town in cenral PA where i grew up, some people a few blocks away had a peacock. LOUD!!!!!!!!
Alan Pasnyk 11:40:45 PM
Canadian Geese sound!
stevie monthly p 11:40:52 PM
Alan, i put turkeys in the same category as coyotes, eagles, geese, swans,
stevie monthly p 11:41:25 PM

stevie monthly p 11:43:34 PM
ticks
Alan Pasnyk 11:43:49 PM
I'd rather have bears than scorpions any day!!!!
Ossy 11:44:08 PM
smelly skunks and rabies raccoons
stevie monthly p 11:44:14 PM
i accidentally encountered a mother black bear and 2 cubs in ricketts glen state park
Alan Pasnyk 11:44:45 PM
not too many ticks this year, but 10 years ago I picked about 40 or so off me
Alan Pasnyk 11:45:19 PM
stevie VERY DANGEROUS!! Bear and cubs Whew!!!
stevie monthly p 11:45:40 PM
i was hiking alone, doing some emotional cleansing, when i came upon 2 cubs about 15 yards away, and their mother about 20 yars away
Ossy 11:46:00 PM
One youtube video I saw has a rotweiler on a leash being attacked by a mountain lion late a night in one forest neighborhood, thanks to an idiot owner. I hope the dog was taken away to a better family
Alan Pasnyk 11:46:24 PM
Back away Respectfully!!!!
stevie monthly p 11:46:29 PM
i froze. didn't make a move or a sound, all the while imagining the aftermath "Authorties found a few pieces of the victim's clothes...."
stevie monthly p 11:47:17 PM
the bear family soon moved on, way away from me. i cancelled the remainder of my hike and made a bee line for my car
Alan Pasnyk 11:47:20 PM
stevie: Expensive funeral avoided!
Ossy 11:48:08 PM
One sad story in Newark NJ, a Rutgers student fell victim to a black bear on one hiking trip in 2015
stevie monthly p 11:48:37 PM
my other, even scarier bear story... i was in angel fire, new mexico, doing a job for a veterans memorial. it was may, 1993.
stevie monthly p 11:49:05 PM
i decided to hike up the steep main ski run where i was staying, at the angel fire ski lodge
stevie monthly p 11:50:03 PM
people said, keep an eye out for bears! i kept an eye out, but still, as it was getting dusky and i was a few thousand feet up the mountain... to the right of the trail... a big brown bear
Alan Pasnyk 11:50:42 PM
If you go camping, Do Not leave food in your tent!!
Alan Pasnyk 11:50:56 PM
stevie: close call..
stevie monthly p 11:51:03 PM
that bear episode was a "back away slowly" dealie
Ossy 11:51:18 PM
Somewhere around Northern Jersey, and his name was Darsh Patel. His other 3 friends tried losing the bear, as it noticed it stalking them, they split up into 4s and that's when Darsh didn't make it, when they regrouped
stevie monthly p 11:52:31 PM
yeah, two close calls with bears were scary. but my close calls with lightning are evey more hair raising!
Ossy 11:52:43 PM
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America
Ossy 11:53:41 PM
Mountain lions are deadliest ninjas and they sound like a car screeching.
stevie monthly p 11:54:59 PM
It's not fun when you suddenly realize that you're no longer at the top of the food chain.
Ossy 11:54:59 PM
Stevie - Grizzlies and polars are heavyweight bloody hell and nightmare fuel
Alan Pasnyk 11:55:30 PM
This past summer it started getting Real Dark outside during the day, I went outside and thought, wow, looks like a big black raincloud, stupid me I went farther out looking up and CRRRACK BAMMMM a bolt came down from more than 45 degrees up, it hit about 200 yards away, I Laughed like all hell...missed me..
stevie monthly p 11:57:08 PM
my first lightning scare was at south mountain pa. people used to drive up on the mountain to get high and watch thunderstorms in the cumberland valley
stevie monthly p 11:57:58 PM
well, one night, i was standing outside my vw bug, about to take a leak, when the air became still, the leaves in the huge trees above me started gently vibrating.
stevie monthly p 11:58:45 PM
then the rocks around my starting quitely hissing. the hair on my arms stood up and BAM... It was like a gun going off in my face
stevie monthly p 11:59:15 PM
i hopped back in the car, mid-leak, and still wondered if i was alive and ok
Ossy 11:59:17 PM
Heavy thunderstorms scare me, especially tornado warnings from the radio and tv
Alan Pasnyk 12:00:39 AM
stevie:Wow! Got me beat. Extra points to you 'cause you were well grounded taking a leak. lucky your privates didn't get blown off ! LOL !!!
stevie monthly p 12:01:19 AM
my next lightning strike was when i was getting on the baltimore beltway from reisterstown road. there was a violent thunderstorm going on. as i entered the cloverleaf, there was a crash on the top of my car that sounded like a shotgun, and the car just went completely dead
Alan Pasnyk 12:02:28 AM
Ossy: Me and my Dad used to love to watch T-storms coming in...memories...he passed away several years back...
stevie monthly p 12:02:33 AM
the car had been struck by lightning. a maryland state cop saw it and drove across the cloverleaf. after the storm subsided a bit, the cop and i opened the hood of my car. the fusible link that connects to the firewall had melted and was smoking
stevie monthly p 12:03:27 AM
i stuck a screwdriver into the fusible link and wrapped the melted wire around the shaft, and could start the car
Alan Pasnyk 12:04:08 AM
stevie: Unbelievable!! And that you survived!
stevie monthly p 12:04:38 AM
the third near strike was on the beach in ocean city nj. a big dark storm blew in from the west, quickly. my friends and i were in aluminum chairs down by the water.
Ossy 12:05:01 AM
That's so scary!!!
stevie monthly p 12:05:06 AM
when we realized how quickly the storm was developing, we grabbed our stuff and headed up the beach.
Ossy 12:05:34 AM
Alan: Awesome and sorry for your dad's passing:(
Alan Pasnyk 12:05:56 AM
stevie: was the car a VW with a hemispherical shape! (Beetle) ???
stevie monthly p 12:05:59 AM
about three quarters of the way to the road, a giant bolt of lighning came down from the sky and BANGED into the sand about 50 feet away from me.
stevie monthly p 12:06:14 AM
67 beetle, Alan
stevie monthly p 12:07:23 AM
sorry about your dad, Alan. I was so caught up in my stories, I missed when you posted that
Alan Pasnyk 12:07:38 AM
stevie; Amazing stories!
stevie monthly p 12:09:02 AM
i'm very careful about lighning now. 3 very close calls is apparently about 3 more than most people have
Alan Pasnyk 12:10:09 AM
When we were kids we messed around with " Van Der Graff" machines that made static electricity, little lightning bolts ..harmless..left the sweet smell of Ozone..
Ossy 12:11:46 AM
A long time ago apparently, a monkey died by lightning in running on an open field, someone told me
Alan Pasnyk 12:11:49 AM
a friend'd dad worked at Philco Ford in Philly and got junk parts, made a Super Big machine to produce static discharge bolts, it was a little scary..
stevie monthly p 12:12:54 AM
Os, that sounds like the first sentence of an interesting short story or novel!
Alan Pasnyk 12:15:05 AM
...but what we learned was that curved shapes hold static charges, then go Boom suddenly, but pointy surfaces dissipate the energy before it builds up...Saint Elmo's Fire..
stevie monthly p 12:17:03 AM
speaking of curved shapes and static charges... i actually saw ball lightning, close to me and for about 10 seconds
Alan Pasnyk 12:17:39 AM
Ben Franklin invented the lightning rod not to attract lightning, but to dissipate the energy (into Ozone) before it builds up.
stevie monthly p 12:18:02 AM
i was living on the second floor of a shabby apartment house on a beach. i was standing by an open window at the kitchen sink
Alan Pasnyk 12:18:05 AM
stevie: Wow! Ball Lightning!!!!!!
stevie monthly p 12:18:31 AM
it was mildly summer thunderstormy outside.
stevie monthly p 12:19:28 AM
there was this bright light and a "shazamm" sort of sound and this spark covered ball of white light, about the size of a basketball, landed in the sand parking lot for this house i lived in
stevie monthly p 12:20:13 AM
it moved around a bit, like rolling on the ground without touching the ground, making a faint sound, like a shimmering pattern on a cymbal.
stevie monthly p 12:20:55 AM
then, as suddenly as it appeared, it popped. and the entire experience was done and gone, like it had never happened
Alan Pasnyk 12:21:50 AM
stevie: Wowww, but not a "boom" lightning sound???
stevie monthly p 12:21:57 AM
hehe. i'm quite the raconteur tonight
stevie monthly p 12:22:57 AM
no boom. just an elecrical SWISHHHH when the ball came down, and that light cymbal-sound when it rolled around
Alan Pasnyk 12:23:39 AM
stevie: Weird!!
stevie monthly p 12:23:51 AM
it wasn't scary, like aliens, portal to other dimensions opening. it was just odd and enthralling
Alan Pasnyk 12:24:36 AM
Lot we still don't understand...
stevie monthly p 12:26:05 AM
the ball lightning makes sense to me now that i've seen it. it doesn't seem mysterious or supernatural. just a beautiful static electricity anomaly that lasts just a few precious seconds
stevie monthly p 12:27:26 AM
Paige & my PRB Pals... i gotta say g'nite.
Alan Pasnyk 12:27:37 AM
Also NASA found out that Severe Lightning, mostly over Africa, causes antimatter in the opposite direction into space..Ethereal wisps..

Ossy 12:30:29 AM
And later night Stevie
Alan Pasnyk 12:31:25 AM
Sounds like bedlam in birdland
stevie monthly p 12:31:56 AM
Os, i want to hear the rest of the story that begins with the sentence "A long time ago apparently, a monkey died by lightning in running on an open field, someone told me."
Ossy 12:34:19 AM
I don't remember much detail of that story, beyond that sentence, but however the monkey died standing still after it was struck by lightning, he said
Alan Pasnyk 12:39:00 AM
" The problem is not that we have all these idiots running around, the problem is that Lightning is improperly distributed" - Mark Twain.
