Alan, there are crows in my neighborhood. I've tried the telepathic method ot make friends. Peanuts too. No dice.

ya know, the bird population is down dramatically in my neighborhood this year

a year or so ago, we had chickadees, sparrows, crows, cardinals, catbirds, and robins

this year? i'm puzzled and worried.

this year... no doves, chickadees, catbirds, cardinals.. even just a sparse population of robins

i think bugs, number one deficit.

my stupid suburban neighbors all have chemlawn and similar shitzes spray their yards a few times a year

i have about an acre, and i love it in the spring when it's the only open patch in my hood that is blanketed with dandelions

the chemlawns of the world are killing the food chain, from soil bacteria to birds

remember lightning bugs? yeah, i think we saw about 3 during the whole summer

the yards used to be alive with lightning bugs, all rising about the same time, just after sundown in june and july

Blue herons would strut along the banks of Mill creek, which was shallow and fast, and BAM grab a trout and eat it on the short

thinking about the low numbers of bugs and birds this year is freaking me out

Alan - I assume it could be a great horned owl, since it looked short. Couldn't further tell what type of owl it is, being dark outside and caught a glimpse of it in a street light

we saw only about 3 lantern flies, happy that they are gone

The most spectacular thing I saw looked like a rock with a tail falling at about 45 mph toward the ground then swooping up a rabbit or something! it was like Wow!

but now, putting it all together, i'm more worried about the envionment in my local area than ever (conshohocken, pa)

Stevie - Wow. Saw a heron one winter day years back in a Mt Laurel lake chilling with some geese, fishing for fishes. Saw another one in the deep Medford area

Alan, the realization and fear that just a few minutes came over me is that even the "pests" like lanernflies were missing this summer

No herons here maybe because of very numerous Red Tailed Hawks...their call is Screeeeeee!

i accidentally encountered a mother black bear and 2 cubs in ricketts glen state park

not too many ticks this year, but 10 years ago I picked about 40 or so off me

i was hiking alone, doing some emotional cleansing, when i came upon 2 cubs about 15 yards away, and their mother about 20 yars away

One youtube video I saw has a rotweiler on a leash being attacked by a mountain lion late a night in one forest neighborhood, thanks to an idiot owner. I hope the dog was taken away to a better family

One sad story in Newark NJ, a Rutgers student fell victim to a black bear on one hiking trip in 2015

my other, even scarier bear story... i was in angel fire, new mexico, doing a job for a veterans memorial. it was may, 1993.

i decided to hike up the steep main ski run where i was staying, at the angel fire ski lodge

people said, keep an eye out for bears! i kept an eye out, but still, as it was getting dusky and i was a few thousand feet up the mountain... to the right of the trail... a big brown bear

Somewhere around Northern Jersey, and his name was Darsh Patel. His other 3 friends tried losing the bear, as it noticed it stalking them, they split up into 4s and that's when Darsh didn't make it, when they regrouped

yeah, two close calls with bears were scary. but my close calls with lightning are evey more hair raising!

This past summer it started getting Real Dark outside during the day, I went outside and thought, wow, looks like a big black raincloud, stupid me I went farther out looking up and CRRRACK BAMMMM a bolt came down from more than 45 degrees up, it hit about 200 yards away, I Laughed like all hell...missed me..

my first lightning scare was at south mountain pa. people used to drive up on the mountain to get high and watch thunderstorms in the cumberland valley

well, one night, i was standing outside my vw bug, about to take a leak, when the air became still, the leaves in the huge trees above me started gently vibrating.

then the rocks around my starting quitely hissing. the hair on my arms stood up and BAM... It was like a gun going off in my face

i hopped back in the car, mid-leak, and still wondered if i was alive and ok

my next lightning strike was when i was getting on the baltimore beltway from reisterstown road. there was a violent thunderstorm going on. as i entered the cloverleaf, there was a crash on the top of my car that sounded like a shotgun, and the car just went completely dead

Ossy: Me and my Dad used to love to watch T-storms coming in...memories...he passed away several years back...

the car had been struck by lightning. a maryland state cop saw it and drove across the cloverleaf. after the storm subsided a bit, the cop and i opened the hood of my car. the fusible link that connects to the firewall had melted and was smoking

i stuck a screwdriver into the fusible link and wrapped the melted wire around the shaft, and could start the car

the third near strike was on the beach in ocean city nj. a big dark storm blew in from the west, quickly. my friends and i were in aluminum chairs down by the water.

That's so scary!!!

when we realized how quickly the storm was developing, we grabbed our stuff and headed up the beach.

i was living on the second floor of a shabby apartment house on a beach. i was standing by an open window at the kitchen sink

it was mildly summer thunderstormy outside.

there was this bright light and a "shazamm" sort of sound and this spark covered ball of white light, about the size of a basketball, landed in the sand parking lot for this house i lived in

it moved around a bit, like rolling on the ground without touching the ground, making a faint sound, like a shimmering pattern on a cymbal.

then, as suddenly as it appeared, it popped. and the entire experience was done and gone, like it had never happened

no boom. just an elecrical SWISHHHH when the ball came down, and that light cymbal-sound when it rolled around

it wasn't scary, like aliens, portal to other dimensions opening. it was just odd and enthralling

Lot we still don't understand...

the ball lightning makes sense to me now that i've seen it. it doesn't seem mysterious or supernatural. just a beautiful static electricity anomaly that lasts just a few precious seconds
