Mike Lupica!
Marcus Watt 12:06:34 PM
Hi, DJ Mike Lupica. I try to catch the daytime shows, but I really liked the Wednesday night pit crew. Your show are always great.
Krista 12:06:39 PM
No room on the ship for Janeway's abandoned lizard children
Marcus Watt 12:07:35 PM
I can correctly conjugate a verb.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:07:35 PM
Like they say, there's your way and then there's the Janeway.
iamthelabhras 12:08:07 PM
Afternoon Mike Lupica et WPRB al.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:09:14 PM
Howdy everyone!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:12:35 PM
@Marcus, now do it in Latin!
iamthelabhras 12:13:25 PM
Mike Lupica: Master of Declension.
Marcus Watt 12:13:33 PM
Dude sounds a bit like Adrian Belew
Mike Lupica (host) 12:13:52 PM
Oops. Bad segue, ten yard penalty
Colin 12:15:59 PM
loving the fact now that if my employer ever checks computer logs they now include a search for "Janeway's abandoned lizard children"
Mike Lupica (host) 12:16:57 PM
Same here. See ya in the county clink, Colin.
MOK Speedwagon 12:17:07 PM
more of a Captain Sisko guy over here
Marcus Watt 12:17:56 PM
I'm double checking everything from now on. Spell correct changed Belew to Blew. Definitely not my style.
Jim Haku 12:19:51 PM
If you wouldn't mind, Adrian Belew...
Esoterica! 12:21:33 PM
thx for playing Meat Puppets!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:22:00 PM
Yeah! The Frank and the Hurricanes record give me big Meat Puppets vibes, hence the segue.
Brian D 12:22:02 PM
Good 2 in row. Meat Puppets always = smiles
Esoterica! 12:22:26 PM
and for the kenneth anger gifs

Brian D 12:23:17 PM
Put your hand inside the puppet head as well
Jim Haku 12:24:15 PM
Gotta do the dumb things ya gotta do.
Marcus Watt 12:24:31 PM
Hey, Esoterica! I just heard your replay this morning. Bit of an insomniac.
Marcus Watt 12:25:13 PM
Thank you, Jim Haku.
Marcus Watt 12:25:54 PM
For the Oxbow info
Esoterica! 12:26:29 PM
howdy marcus! well, hope you liked it!
Esoterica! 12:26:37 PM
sorry about that insomnia
Jim Haku 12:27:26 PM
I will surely be assaulted, but I'm fine w/ it.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:29:19 PM
I think that's the expectation for every Oxbow gig, Jim.
Jim Haku 12:30:21 PM
That and he might get naked.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:30:41 PM
Sounds like a typical Tuesday.
Brian D 12:32:28 PM
DJ KARAOKE!
iamthelabhras 12:37:01 PM
Personally, I think my interest in abandoned lizard children makes me that much *more* of a desirable hire!
Brian D 12:37:39 PM
This WPRB Princeton used to be all orange groves .... one day this could all be yours...
Jim Haku 12:39:23 PM
Raise those lizard children.
Marcus Watt 12:40:27 PM
I normally despise people who brag about shows they saw, but here goes. At the Mann, around '82, in order of appearance, Duran, Duran, Bush Tetras, Third World, Split Enz, and Squeeze. That was fun.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:40:50 PM
Wow! Quite a bill!
Brian D 12:40:58 PM
Capt Janeway allegedly cast in a show set in the Philly / BuxCo area. Based on the book Dope Thief. Show might be named Sinking Spring if they haven't changed it again. I think the bite-outta-fruit streaming service... famous for their string can walkie talkies n such
Mike Lupica (host) 12:41:37 PM
Here for it (says the guy who recently bought three seasons of Voyager on cutout DVD for the kiddo who is a bit obsessed.)
iamthelabhras 12:42:00 PM
Nice, Marcus! I have fond memories of seeing The Mermen, the Kingsbury Manx, & the Young Vulgarians at the old North Star. Also have fond memories of seeing Low at the Philly Ethical Society. (RIP Mimi.)
Colin 12:43:16 PM
i feel like voyager really hit its stride around season 4
Mike Lupica (host) 12:44:21 PM
OK! Let's all do that concert bragging thing that Marcus just warned us about. Uhh... uhhh... I saw Metallica, 3rd row seats? Soundgarden with 20 other people?
Jim Haku 12:44:36 PM
Meant to rewatch before they took it off Netflix. Don't think I got to the end when it was on air.
Brian D 12:44:39 PM
Also alleged, Capt Jane was in Philly area earlier in year at some bar practicing the accent . Book was a fun read. WPRB gets a shout as something like "so i headed up 611 towards Doylestown and tuned the radio to the Princeton college Station.. " or some such
Jim Haku 12:45:41 PM
Saw White Stripes at Maxwell's.
MOK Speedwagon 12:45:50 PM
go figure..i stopped watchng Voyager after s3
Mike Lupica (host) 12:46:30 PM
Get me the copyeditor on the phone. We are NOT "the Princeton college station".
Jim Haku 12:46:46 PM
There was a while when all the good shows were at North Star or the Khyber.
Colin 12:46:50 PM
brian d, you're correct about the sinking spring name. at one point they blew up a barn for the filming and it triggered many 911 calls because the residents did not know a show was being filmed.
Brian D 12:47:30 PM
She would play the main char's mom i would think. Little spoils: 2 area dudes that are 2 bit criminals get fake badges, jackets & pose as DEA agents to rob meth labs & drug houses. That's just page 1-10 or so. Lot more..
Rofflestomp 12:48:30 PM
Hi Mike! Good afternoon all! "College station"? It must be a period piece. :)
Mike Lupica (host) 12:49:45 PM
OLD SCHOOL AT NOON STARTS 49 MINUTES LATE
Jim Haku 12:49:48 PM
When did it stop being the college station? I mean, it was, right?
Mike Lupica (host) 12:49:59 PM
Nope. Always been independent.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:50:08 PM
College "adjacent".
Brian D 12:50:27 PM
Yeah Colin. That's about 5-10 mins from me the "barn" in Ottsville area. They found an old farmhouse to blow up but then.. concerns about lead paint, hazards etc. The crew built a fake farm house out of plywood and blew that up instead. I only found out about show& read book thanks to closed road reports around Bucks. Road / map geek that I am
Jim Haku 12:50:38 PM
Thought it was on the campus on some point.
Rofflestomp 12:51:04 PM
Is that the same for the AM too? Always a Tigers game there. :)
MOK Speedwagon 12:51:14 PM
engine engine #9
Mike Lupica (host) 12:52:21 PM
AM station? That ain't us. Might be a timeshare they do or something.
Rofflestomp 12:52:27 PM
It was in the Student Center last time I was on campus. Yeah, it's been a while.
Jim Haku 12:52:29 PM
yes
Brian D 12:52:30 PM
Still on campus. Airways independent. Coexists in that ivy world
Brian D 12:52:51 PM
Always but yeah airways too heh
Colin 12:54:16 PM
gotta remember forgotten lizard babies, and an exploding bucks county barn for the next wprb art drive
Rofflestomp 12:55:14 PM
Ah, yeah that's above my pay grade need to know. I remember them going over to the game coverage that was on an AM station and that used to drive me nutz.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:56:03 PM
Oh that guitar crunch that's about to hit your eardrums....
Rofflestomp 12:56:03 PM
Milk carton lizard kids. Who knew?
Marcus Watt 12:56:39 PM
I just went on setlist to check out the June 26th 1982 show at the Mann I mentioned. All they had was Split Enz played I Got You. Who couldn't possibly forget Too Many Creeps?
Brian D 12:56:57 PM
"College Radio" term in book most likely used as a genre not super literal (although understood that many people think WPRB is associated with the university) . The writer is about the age that would use that term.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:57:18 PM
It's a common misconception, for sure.
Jon Solomon 12:58:12 PM
I finally listened to that Weak Signal record yesterday!
richard lyons:) 12:58:41 PM
Tammy ❤️
Mike Lupica (host) 12:59:28 PM
@Jon, that Weak Signal rekkid is great!
richard lyons:) 12:59:30 PM
I like that Weak Signal release quite a bit!
Marcus Watt 12:59:32 PM
Definitely better than the original.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:59:41 PM
@Richard, hankies out.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:00:14 PM
I read recently that the original version of Honey I Miss You was voted one of the worst songs ever in some Rolling Stone poll.
Brian D 1:00:31 PM
Tammya Wynucker
Brian D 1:01:53 PM
Right up there with Rocky I never had to die before, have a baby before, get married before...
Brian D 1:03:02 PM
But songs like that gave Dead Milkmen idea for Watching Scotty Die so. .. winnish
MOK Speedwagon 1:04:23 PM
Joe Jack @ John and Peter's next month
Marcus Watt 1:04:33 PM
Too many people forget The Dead Milkmen. Rodney was something.
Jon Solomon 1:04:47 PM
Weak Signal is certain not short on tones!
MOK Speedwagon 1:05:05 PM
"was" ?!?!?
Jim Haku 1:05:32 PM
Rodney is on Mastodon.
Brian D 1:05:45 PM
YEAH! BETA BAND!
MOK Speedwagon 1:05:55 PM
he put on some weight..but he's still Rodney
Jim Haku 1:07:24 PM
He also has a radio show but he plays all goth/industrial stuff, he is really into that.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:07:24 PM
@Brian, yeah, totally forgot about this one. Came up randomly on an old mixtape I was listening to in the garage. Took me a minute to remember who it was!
MOK Speedwagon 1:08:58 PM
yeah Rodney went all dark wave
Brian D 1:09:14 PM
Memory listening to this Beta lp (eps) camping at Cobscook State Park in Maine. Evening on bay. Evening at like 930 pm. Just about Atlantic time zone up there
MOK Speedwagon 1:09:31 PM
Joe Jack said the Milkmen all want to do more show but Rodney isn't onboard
Jim Haku 1:10:07 PM
It's funny cause it seemed like the Milkmen were making fun of that kind of stuff but he was making fun of specific bands, he has really specific taste about it.
Brian D 1:10:30 PM
Old flip phone kept switching time to Atlantic time heh
Marcus Watt 1:11:12 PM
And Dave S. died young.
Jim Haku 1:11:31 PM
I heard the other guys have kinda mellower music taste now, he still wants to scream about stuff.
MOK Speedwagon 1:12:38 PM
yeah unfortunalty w/o Rodney there is no band. I am hoping at least The Low Budgets play some shows next year
MOK Speedwagon 1:13:32 PM
when i saw them last Rodney was screaming about politics..and i saw Joe Jack cringing
Marcus Watt 1:13:38 PM
Funny how Rodney didn't appear on their hit. When Joe attributed California Dreaming to the Beach Boys, I laughed for 20 seconds.
Jim Haku 1:15:05 PM
They did cover it.
Brian D 1:15:56 PM
Yeah topical at the time lyic reference i thought
Marcus Watt 1:15:59 PM
Joe never heard that.
Jim Haku 1:18:37 PM
Neither have I, recently found that out. Could be a joke or not!
Brian D 1:18:52 PM
I hear that complaint totally. Yer listening to your bright red hoop radio and you wanna tune into some rocking tunes and some middle aged guy starts talk singing about honey I miss you for 5 mins. Def not pleasant
Mike Lupica (host) 1:19:07 PM
LOL
Jim Haku 1:19:38 PM
Wait a minute, was there a Japanese rapper in the Beta Band?
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:19:41 PM
@ Mike Lupica (host) Not surprised that Rolling Stone readers would vote "Honey (I Miss You)" as a most-hated song. The original Bobby Goldsboro hit is really very touching, an old-fashioned "tear-jerker." I'm sure they hated admitting being emotionally moved by such a sentimental recording!
Marcus Watt 1:19:46 PM
It's only funny if Joe deliberately mistook The Mamas and the Papas for The Beach Boys.
MOK Speedwagon 1:21:22 PM
I'll have to ask him next month or I could send the question the Milkmen youtube show they do..
Mike Lupica (host) 1:22:00 PM
My wife is the undisputed lord of mistaking bands and artists for one another. She once called Dizzy Gillespie "Dizzee Rascal", John Fogerty "Dan Fogelberg", and when our daughter was little, she once asked me to pull up the clip of "Faust" on Sesame Street. She meant "Feist".
Brian D 1:23:07 PM
Joe knew and put the Beach Boys reference in there on purpose. It was a recent hit for BBs. Not a mistake. Alleged Joe said of the lyric there the kid in the song might not know that the orig version was Ms&Ps
Jim Haku 1:24:18 PM
The Faust episode is the rarest of forbidden Sesame Streets.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:27:02 PM
I would give several major organs to see Faust on Sesame Street.
Jim Haku 1:29:27 PM
Still weird to me that Feist was the real breakout artist of Peaches & Gonzales.
Marcus Watt 1:29:46 PM
I trust you Brian. It still would have been funnier if he'd done it deliberately.
Rofflestomp 1:33:34 PM
To some, Sesame Street seems like a circle of hell. Weird monsters and all.
Jim Haku 1:35:25 PM
I absolutely knew about, then completely forgot this Beta Band rap that does not contain real words.
Brian D 1:36:15 PM
Mom had a great misheard lyric in the 1970s. She heard "Big old Chad Evalyna". Any guesses out there....
Parrscream 1:37:03 PM
@Brian - Steve Miller Band?
Jim Haku 1:37:11 PM
Saw Marc Ribot at Tonic. Won the tix. He was playing the Book of Heads at the time, great stuff.
Brian D 1:37:41 PM
Yup! It's just as good as the other "we don't chat at a lighthouse"
Brian D 1:38:58 PM
GOT NO LOVE... NO LOVE IN KOREA! GOT NOBODY WAITING AT HOOOOOOMME AHHHHHH
richard lyons:) 1:39:12 PM
I missed this Obnox! Like it.
Brian D 1:40:48 PM
Squint today and title might look like How to Burn a Barn at quick glance
Mike Lupica (host) 1:40:53 PM
@Richard, I kinda prefer Obnox when they do mutant hip-hop and weird noise tracks (as opposed to their noiserock stuff.)
richard lyons:) 1:41:35 PM
bookmarked
Marcus Watt 1:42:26 PM
The Zim: The ants are my friends, are blowin' in the wind
Brian D 1:43:42 PM
Bob gave names to all the animals. A toad a sew
Brian D 1:44:36 PM
Two birds get stoned at once.. .
Jim Haku 1:51:49 PM
I think Flaming Fire played Uncle Joe's? I was drinking a lot at the time. Def remember meeting them at the record fair.
Marcus Watt 1:55:16 PM
I can't believe nobody at WPRB caught Faust opening for Pere Ubu with Wayne Kramer sitting in two months ago at Le Poisson Rouge in the village in NYC.
Marcus Watt 1:55:59 PM
Check the setlist. It was very good.
Jim Haku 2:00:25 PM
Wow, did not hear about that.
richard lyons:) 2:04:29 PM
Sprints🔥💥
Jim Haku 2:05:42 PM
The Village Gate sign is still there on the LPR building, I noticed last time I was there, it's behind the CVS awning, partially visible from across the intersection.
Jim Haku 2:07:43 PM
Great Herbie Mann record recorded there.
Jim Haku 2:08:51 PM
ground zero
Jim Haku 2:10:08 PM
When this record came out I was zero years old and six apples high.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:10:33 PM
Seizure, Jim?
Jim Haku 2:11:55 PM
No, I feel fine.
Jim Haku 2:12:10 PM
Bad Brain.
Andrew G/ 2:14:46 PM
seizure? stikky? subhumans? are you trying to give me higj school flashbacks???
Jim Haku 2:14:55 PM
The song is significant, musicologically. They stop being in a specific key? It's been written about.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:15:58 PM
Hahaha Andrew!
richard lyons:) 2:17:30 PM
emmamussabebonk 🤣
Commie Francis ☭ 2:17:49 PM
Ya Canadian. Hi!!!
Commie Francis ☭ 2:19:16 PM
That was definitely a trip down memory lane set
Brian D 2:19:53 PM
The Paul Tax? I don't think it's fair to tax people just because their name is Paul. Ms Litella, That's actually Poll Tax and you don't have an accent. Oh well that's entirely different. Never mind....
Mike Lupica (host) 2:20:53 PM
@Commie, yeah, dunno where that came from but clearly when I pull the Rip-Offs LP, anything is in play.
Marcus Watt 2:21:56 PM
We love Emily, Brian.
Commie Francis ☭ 2:23:36 PM
Bill was in a band with the singer of seizure btw
Mike Lupica (host) 2:24:15 PM
That is awesome! I loved them. That whole record is killer!
Mike Lupica (host) 2:25:41 PM
Just noticing now how many 'S' bands were played consecutively in that last set.
Colin 2:27:02 PM
It's SSSSSSSuper WedneSday!
richard lyons:) 2:28:19 PM
This Fisty Kendal is kinda great!
Jim Haku 2:29:07 PM
S bands are def a thing.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:29:09 PM
Yeah! Was new to me but dug this lots
Brian D 2:31:26 PM
Love this Chaino
Mike Lupica (host) 2:31:50 PM
I think it's safe to say that I will be overplaying this in the coming weeks.
Travis (Sur Tizzle) 2:33:19 PM
Haha, Serengeti
Colin 2:33:22 PM
YES! been a minute since i heard serengeti
Mike Lupica (host) 2:34:27 PM
I love this record! Not enough hip-hop concept records in my life anymore.
Travis (Sur Tizzle) 2:34:33 PM
Dennehy is a great tune.
Andrew G/ 2:34:45 PM
@mike did you see Big Blood last week?
Mike Lupica (host) 2:35:42 PM
