A brimful of show today!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:05:35 PM
Ten gallon hat of 45s!
Colin 12:07:08 PM
45's means dj is gonna work. especially if they are punk 45's = less than 30 seconds to enter the playlist info, cue up the next song and respond to the chat.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:07:27 PM
@Colin, I am wiser than to try that shit anymore.
Brian D 12:09:54 PM
My sis got a great birthday present in the early 1970s. Our uncle got her every 45 in the top 10 or top 20? from Woolworths or some such ... inherited those but... gone now..
Brian D 12:10:01 PM
SHUGGIE!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:11:37 PM
Amen break fans, get ready. Here comes the most famous sample of all time.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:12:46 PM
BOOM. Didja catch it?
Colin 12:13:21 PM
junglist stylezzzz!!!
Brian D 12:13:29 PM
Got my purple crayon out for that
DSM 12:14:13 PM
All 45's very nice! My stack goes underplayed cuz I hate switching the turntable drive belt over
Brian D 12:14:37 PM
Right up 'ere with James Brown "Funky Drummer "and Incredible Bongo Band
Mike Lupica (host) 12:15:26 PM
@DSM, start searching Craigslist for vinyl jukeboxes!
DSM 12:16:24 PM
lol, if I had more space I'd probably consider that tbh
Brian D 12:17:01 PM
Not sure if it was in that gift batch but we had R Dean Taylor "Indiana Wants Me". Played that a bunch.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:17:28 PM
@DSM, I used to talk like that... and then I gave into the dark side (of longterm lifegoals) and ... ot a jukebox.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:17:33 PM
*got
Mike Lupica (host) 12:17:45 PM
@Brian, I almost brought that one in today!
Rofflestomp 12:17:49 PM
Love the Jukebox idea. A buggy whip with style.
Brian D 12:19:40 PM
Strange one in the gift 45s was a Canadian reporter doing an impassioned defence (see that? ) of the USA. With patriotic background music. A spoken word "hit" that charted i guess. Byron maybe was first name?
DSM 12:19:51 PM
That's a baller item Mike, congrats!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:20:26 PM
@DSM, tiny pic but this is the baby in action at my house: https://spinitron.com/images/Show/20/60/206062-img_show.225x225.jpg?v=1597579622
Colin 12:20:29 PM
once, I was about 14 or 15 cruising around with my friend who just got their license, we stopped at a random pool hall in feasterville. I ran in put a 5er in the juke and selected stairway to heaven 20 times then left.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:20:43 PM
LOL Colin, nice move!
Brian D 12:21:27 PM
Byron MacGregor "Americans". https://www.discogs.com/release/1185966-Byron-Mac-Gregor-Americans
Colin 12:21:48 PM
i too this day wonder how times it played through before somebody noticed and utilized the selection kill switch
DSM 12:22:01 PM
omg Colin lol
Brian D 12:23:31 PM
Love that Westbound records art logo on 45s
DSM 12:23:57 PM
there was a cover band playing at the end of my street last night and they finished with Surrender, good to see little kids bopping around to it
Seals & Mok 12:24:45 PM
👍👍
Brian D 12:25:11 PM
Colin at the bar formerly known as Big Jim's in Penndel, friends used to put on Allman Bros "Mountain Jam" when they first got a CD jukebox. 45 minutes plus... multiple plays....
Brian D 12:26:42 PM
Have to mention John Mulaney's "Salt & Pepper " diner bit.. WHAT'S NEW... https://youtu.be/Tv1l1eUhN-E
Colin 12:27:01 PM
brian, lol poor southern Bucks County juke box listeners saw no mercy from the mischievous youth!
Colin 12:29:22 PM
great slits selection!! I never heard this one before
Mike Lupica (host) 12:30:05 PM
I think it was on one of those Rough Trade comps, but not on the original LPs?
Mike Lupica (host) 12:30:16 PM
(And obvs, on this 45)
Brian D 12:30:59 PM
Went to a campground in middle of New Jersey early 80s with a jukebox that had Ace Frehley "New York Groove "and a badly skipping Kinks "Superman ". Both played over and over
Colin 12:32:35 PM
I caught the first hour of the lost in time and sub, it was massive and sent me off to rock and roll dreamscapes
Colin 12:33:32 PM
brian, 80's campground jukeboxes sounds like a great coffee table book.
Seals & Mok 12:33:36 PM
Wow this will be a long playlist
Brian D 12:37:08 PM
The diner booth mini jukebox individual units in each booth were a fixture in 80s. They all had Sinatra "My Way" with b-side "Cycles" (a bad-good but better song) . And some had Neil Diamond "Kentucky Woman". That was a great single (covered by Rod Evans era Deep Purple)
Marcus Watt 12:37:58 PM
Sexy Beast is probably the Ben K. film you referenced
Brian D 12:38:15 PM
I wonder if Mike has any Neil D in store today.... request for Kentucky Woman if possible
Mike Lupica (host) 12:38:41 PM
Yep! Thank, Marcus. Or shall I say... "NO! NONONONONONONO! NOTTHISFUCKINGTIME NOTTHIS FUCKING TIME NOTTHIS FUCKING TIME!!! NO!NO!NO!"
richard lyons:) 12:39:00 PM

Mike Lupica (host) 12:39:05 PM
Alas, Brian... I somehow don't think I have any Neil on 45!
Brian D 12:40:00 PM
*matches down street with cries of SHAME repeating...
Mike Lupica (host) 12:40:09 PM
Hahahaha!
Brian D 12:40:18 PM

Brian D 12:40:51 PM
Any Sweet on hand? Glam mini set?
Mike Lupica (host) 12:42:44 PM
Alas, I considered it but feel like I just played them a couple weeks ago so hopped past it while flipping. Next time fo' surre!
Ambrose Hughes 12:42:47 PM
Hi Mike! Just popping in and out quick, I always wondered were the Stray Cats influenced by the Blank Generation, thinking Stray Cat Strut ...
Mike Lupica (host) 12:44:18 PM
@Ambrose, huh! Never considered that but I think you're onto something...
DSM 12:46:24 PM
one of my most played 45's is Errol Dunkley's version of Don't Make Me Over with Little Green Apples on the back, great 80's french meets reggae production
Colin 12:48:48 PM
when I was a kid, I had the close encounters sound track and included was a 45 of a disco version of the alien communication song. I gotta check to see if that is in my collection, or still on the shelf at my parents house.
Colin 12:49:52 PM
also, this noh mercy song 🔥
DSM 12:51:17 PM
disco version of the alien communication song!!!
Dale Hazelton 12:51:25 PM
doing house things so not gonna chat, but popped on to say i've got my ears on.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:52:32 PM
Right on, thanks for checking in, Dale!
Marcus Watt 12:53:04 PM
Brian D. I love the Salt and Pepper Diner bit. Also The Fall covered R. Dean Taylor's There's a Ghost in My House.
Brian D 12:56:38 PM
Ya! Just read Steve Hanley's book last month. Crazy cover choice. And reminded about the other Fall song where they lifted the main riff of Spinal Tap's Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight.
Brian D 12:56:51 PM
Forget what song that was.

What a SuperDuper Special ALL Vinyl 45s Show! Big cheers to you, DJ MikeLupica!
Mike Lupica (host) 1:02:08 PM
Thanks, MrM. Your support FILLS MY SAILS WITH HOPE.
Marcus Watt 1:02:21 PM
First record I ever bought was a 45 from The Stolen Roans in 1965. Something about Mick whining that he can't get any satisfaction.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:05:31 PM
I actually can't remember the first 45 I ever had. I was more of the "Shoplifting Cassettes" generation, only started getting into singles when I discovered punk rock/hardcore/DIY stuff in middle school.
Brian D 1:06:09 PM
*sirens... turns head
Mike Lupica (host) 1:06:43 PM
But on that note, I will be playing a 45 of a song that WAS on one of my most cherished cassette metal albums at somepoint before I wrap up today.
DSM 1:07:24 PM
I will admit the first 45 I bought with my own money was Kylie Minogue's Do the Locomotion. I was 5 and thought she was babe city.
Brian D 1:10:07 PM
Friends used to switch out the price tags on double albums at the Woolworths and put on $1 or $2 tags. They did not have the multi- piece "fall apart" security tags. Clerk was a nice middle aged to senior... no idea how much Physical Graffiti costs... Friends would then sell me the 12-15 dollarish double lps to me and others for about $6-7. Good deal.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:11:18 PM
Brian, that story should come with a complimentary cigarette and warm beer in the woods.
Brian D 1:11:47 PM
You know us only too well!
Jon Solomon 1:12:30 PM
Finally, Shuggie Otis and Big Drill Car in the same set.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:12:59 PM
It had to happen.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:13:08 PM
b/w I Lost a Bet
Brian D 1:13:17 PM
The smell of a newly unwrapped cassette. Especially the new breed clear cassettes after the opaque ones were old school
Jon Solomon 1:13:41 PM
As The Prophecy foretold.
Brian D 1:14:49 PM
Friend used to sniff deeply upon unwrapping... "mmmm yeah this is gonna be a great tape... i can tell"
Marcus Watt 1:18:41 PM
As for crime, back in the early 70's, there were five or six places that sold records near the Tower. A few of us would carry a bag from a nearby store with an empty cover in it with the bottom cut off, and slip it over the desired record. Not proud, but we were teenagers.
Brian D 1:21:48 PM
We are almost at the midpoint of Summer yup. I think right about Aug 4-6 each year. 45 or so days after solstice
Mike Lupica (host) 1:23:56 PM
I love that this is becoming a safe space for teenage crime confessions.
Marcus Watt 1:25:07 PM
Statute of limitations.
Brian D 1:26:27 PM
FRANCINE!
Brian D 1:26:47 PM
Zed zed tops en Español
Mike Lupica (host) 1:27:04 PM
As I often say, "Francene" is the best song ever to walk into a room to.
Brian D 1:28:08 PM
*boxer / wrestler adjusts towel around neck, gestures to crowd in cheap seats
Brian D 1:28:52 PM
Master of Sparks. Crazy story behind that one
DSM 1:29:28 PM
I had a good BMG scam going for awhile. Get the 12 for the price of 1 then "return" them to Barnes and Noble, they would just scan the barcode and give you what they sold them for which was the time of like $18 per cd. Then they give you a gift card, and the best part was that at that time I guess they were partnered with Amazon and you could use the gift card on Amazon for anything.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:31:12 PM
Yowza! Most people I know just ordered BMG under a name like "Harry Cretin" or some such.
DSM 1:32:05 PM
I did that too, false names, but mostly so I could increase the B&N-> Amazon scam
Marcus Watt 1:32:13 PM
Hey, Harry Cretin is my real name!
DSM 1:32:40 PM
lol
Brian D 1:33:24 PM
Good one! My old roommate had about 25 different names signed up. One of the names was Paul Frahlay or something close to that. Kept getting box sets upon box sets... if BMG ever called to question the legitimacy he'd get angry and theaten to quit membership. Claimed they were all roommates in diff apartments or some such... got away with it for so so long. Colin knows this person ha
Brian D 1:35:36 PM
Tony Joe White!
Marcus Watt 1:37:21 PM
Love Tony Joe. Mike asked about favorite 45's. I'm going with Help b/w I'm Down.
Brian D 1:37:26 PM
It was a classic case of "they keep pulling me back in! " when he wanted to quit BMG in the end... they'd send an offer to continue with some unbeatable deal.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:38:22 PM
TJW = he of the Most Velvety Voice!
Brian D 1:39:30 PM

Brian D 1:42:56 PM
A good brief run was the Maxxell tapes promo points deal. Collected so many points stickers i was able to get about s dozen cd's, a Sony cd boombox and many more blank tapes. For just a bit they'd let you write in any artist/ album title that you wanted if you had a certain set point amount of promo stickers. Single lp, double lp etc... then they later clamped down and limited it. First few cds were sent in the cardboard long box heh

Mike Lupica (host) 2:01:27 PM
Any similarities between this Evie Sands song and the riff from Wild Thing are purely intentional, I suspect.
Marcus Watt 2:03:33 PM
Chip Taylor who wrote Wild Thing also wrote Angel of the Morning. Go figure.

That was Brad Gillis from Night Ranger. Oz did not really want to release that. Had to quick finish the tour dates, fulfill record co... etc

@Brian, ahh! I'd forgotten that!
Marcus Watt 2:39:02 PM
A few years prior, actually.

I bought that double live Ozz lp too... did not realize the whole story behind it.. listened a few times and traded it to one of my buddies who did the price tag thing heh

Bobby Troup, who wrote Route 66 also wrote The Girl Can't Help It.
Brian D 2:43:55 PM
There's bootleg video of Brad G in band of that 82 tour after RR. Had to learn all the songs real quick. They did solo Oz songs too at the shows. But the lp included only Sabbath songs out of respect to RR. Brad was clutch player . Tough time

90s-00s Stones mini set part of show where they play in center of arena with stripped down band for 3-4 songs often included Route 66. Done well too. Just enough slop. 'Mats definitely drawing from the Stones version.

Friend o mine would slay this Isaak vocal. Don't know if he ever did it karaoke... but we got him up a few times to do it. Then he stopped agreeing to do it. Can understand tho
