This song is about Colin Roach, a 21-year-old black British man who died from a gunshot wound inside the entrance of Stoke Newington police station, in the Hackney section of London on January 12th, 1983. The the entire "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" album is essentially dedicated to his family, and contains a photograph on the inner sleeve of his sad-faced parents standing in the rain in front of a poster of their son. Below the image is the inscription: "God's place is the world; but the world is not God's place."

The title of the album is from Psalm 91:13 "you will tread upon the lion and cobra". "Troy" was her debut single, released in 1987. Written by O'Connor, the lyric is based on the poem No Second Troy by William Butler Yeats. In the documentary Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares (2022), she explained that the song is about a traumatic experience during her childhood involving her mother.

Lion and the Cobra Chrysalis Records 1987
Spoken-word intro by Enya reciting, in the Irish language, psalm 91: " "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." As a psalm of protection, it is commonly invoked in times of hardship. Though no author is mentioned in the Hebrew text of this psalm, Jewish tradition ascribes it to Moses, with David compiling it in his Book of Psalms.

traditional Irish folk song, which exists in a number of versions and has been recorded many times. The narrator sees his lover move away from him through the fair, after telling him that since her family will approve, "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day". She returns as a ghost at night, and repeats the words "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day", intimating her own tragic death and the couple's potential reunion in the afterlife.

Hello!
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:03:19 PM
Can’t wait for the show tonight. Hi Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:38 PM
Hi Addie, I'm glad you're here and I hope you're feeling better!
Lizbot (host) 5:07:05 PM
@Addie - I'm happy to play 3 hours of Sinéad today, but sad it's for such a heartbreaking reason
Lizbot (host) 5:07:50 PM
This song is so beautiful and there's a great video of her performing it live with The Chieftains.
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:10:15 PM
It’s the worst reason 😔
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:10:32 PM
And thanks, I’m feeling much better.
Lizbot (host) 5:12:13 PM
@Addie - I know. I don't like doing a lot of tributes for artists' birthdays, cuz there's always good artists' birthdays every day and it's too limiting to the playlist, BUT I will 100% pay tribute to an artist I respect when they die, especially if it's shortly before my show, but I felt so glum putting this together for today
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:15:18 PM
Gosh she just had the most beautiful voice.
Lizbot (host) 5:17:26 PM
@Addie - I know...achingly gorgeous
Lizbot (host) 5:18:58 PM
My best friend in high school was a huge Sinéad fan and I always think about driving around Jersey and going on roadtrips with her to the Berkshires when she left high school early and started going to Simon's Rock to finish high school in Great Barrington, Mass.
Lizbot (host) 5:20:38 PM
The guitar in that one short bridge sounded like whale sounds!
George Korein 5:21:47 PM
i just read on wikipedia that one of the guitarists on this album played and co-wrote with Adam Ant
Marshall Deerfield 5:22:18 PM
Thanks for this tribute. Randomly tuned in while driving around Philly today. Love local radio!
George Korein 5:22:39 PM

George Korein 5:23:03 PM
One of the other guitarists is a whale
George Korein 5:23:24 PM
Boy can that whale wail
Rob F 5:23:29 PM
Hi Lizbot, I never really listened to Sinéad, but did think she had a beautiful voice. Enjoying this tribute
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:24:23 PM
My Sinéad memories are weirdly hyper focused on the time period when I worked at an exhibit production shop and the boss weirdly had a copy of Universal Mother.
Lizbot (host) 5:24:27 PM
Hi Rob F! I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's an excuse to take a Sinéad deep-dive!
Lizbot (host) 5:24:57 PM
Hi Marshall! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Thank you for tuning in!
George Korein 5:25:10 PM
Deep dive 🐋
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:25:15 PM
Looking back, what an unlikely choice for a construction shop manager it was!
Lizbot (host) 5:25:24 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:26:51 PM
my favorite sinead track!
richard lyons:) 5:28:25 PM
Dropping in to say thank you for the tribute!! RIP Sinéad 💕
Lizbot (host) 5:29:11 PM
@Addie - It's funny how certain albums/artists are so intrinsically tied with certain very specific memories! We played a lot of Bikini Kill in the bookstore I worked in at the Phila Airport...pissed off a lotta people haha!
Lizbot (host) 5:29:43 PM
@Addie - But artists I heard a lot when I first got my license are especially lodged in my memories from that time. This album I listened to during one of my first roadtrips ever (that I drove myself)
Marshall Deerfield 5:29:56 PM
You always have the best curated shows, Lizbot! I knew it was you DJing before even checking online or hearing your station ID announcement. Your awesome and rad for locking us all in with this tribute!
Lizbot (host) 5:30:00 PM
Hi Richard lyons! Thank you for tuning in
richard lyons:) 5:30:36 PM
Hi Lizbot and chat!
Lizbot (host) 5:30:58 PM
@Addie - More Universal Mother to stoke the flames of those shop memories!
Lizbot (host) 5:32:10 PM
@Marshall Deerfield - Aw thanks so much! I really appreciate that! I am sad she's gone too soon, but happy to share her music on prb
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:35:08 PM
@lizbot yessss, road-trip albums are indelible!
Rob from Maryland 5:35:17 PM
Hello Lizbot and doubleplusgooders! We're enjoying this show even though it is a sad occasion
Lizbot (host) 5:36:42 PM
@Addie - for real! Early ones were especially heady!
Number 6 5:37:47 PM
Greetings all! Still here in Spain for a few more days.
George Korein 5:37:48 PM
Ooh I like this red football
Lizbot (host) 5:38:03 PM
Hi Rob from Maryland! I'm glad you're tuned in. I'm loving listening to Sinéad nonstop this last day and a half, despite the sad circumstances
Lizbot (host) 5:38:13 PM
chomp!
Lizbot (host) 5:38:30 PM
@George - Is this part with the la's the gator singing?
George Korein 5:38:58 PM
Lyle Lyle Crocodile?
Lizbot (host) 5:38:59 PM
Hi Number 6! Wow, I am envious! Where are you now?
George Korein 5:39:29 PM
Is this the part where he finally snaps and snaps the head off of Hector P. Valenti, star of stage and screen?
Lizbot (host) 5:40:01 PM
@George Korein - haha, it's Lyle: The True Story
Number 6 5:40:03 PM
Santiago has been my home base, and I have been traveling to other cities by bus for day trips.
George Korein 5:40:05 PM
Yes the "la la" is the croc-chorale
Lizbot (host) 5:40:28 PM
@George - Lyle is singing Red Football to Hector P. Valenti, star of stage & screen
George Korein 5:40:43 PM
now the truth can be told
George Korein 5:41:07 PM
Re: "The Whaling Wall is the wall in that church at the beginning of Moby Dick. The preacher is a humpback" The most famous whale in church is the humpback of Notre Dame
Lizbot (host) 5:41:15 PM
@Number 6 - Nice! I haven't been back to Spain since my friend got married in madrid in 2008
Lizbot (host) 5:44:06 PM
@George - croc-chorale sounds like a type of Cadbury chocolate bar
Lizbot (host) 5:45:41 PM
@George - HA! And The Humpback of Notre Dame's only friend is New Zealand Tom
Number 6 5:47:48 PM
It's been nice and cool here, unlike hot Philly, I've heard.
Lizbot (host) 5:49:02 PM
@Number 6 - Philly has been downright tropical
Number 6 5:50:38 PM
At night you can open the window, no fans or AC here!
Number 6 5:53:19 PM
So sorry to hear about Sinéad O'Connor, she was very talented!:(
Lizbot (host) 5:56:39 PM
@Number 6 - She was, it's heartbreaking. I cannot believe both she and Dolores O'Roirdan of The Cranberries, both Irish woman singers with achingly gorgeous voices who were big in my teen years, died far too young
Lizbot (host) 5:56:51 PM
I love this epic, Troy
George Korein 5:59:08 PM
Fire and strings
Lizbot (host) 6:02:01 PM
@George - for real
Number 6 6:02:51 PM
The Cranberries were definitely an epic group, for want of a better description.
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 6:03:54 PM
Oooooo, this one.
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 6:04:37 PM
Chills
Lizbot (host) 6:06:07 PM
@Addie - Good on Peter Gabriel! This is about him
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 6:07:24 PM
I never knew!
Lizbot (host) 6:07:44 PM
@Number 6 - The Cranberries first album came out when I was 15, and it was huge in the art room of my high school, where i spent a lot of time cutting block prints! The 2nd album came out the next year, and the popularity of the track "Zombie" came in handy in giving at least SOME framework/familiarity with the Irish Troubles to my classmates before I presented my senior project on Irish history!
Arlene Machiavelli 6:09:53 PM
Thanks for this tribute, Lizbot! She was such an original artist and so passionate and uncompromising. I don't know a lot of her work so I am loving this. TROY, wow!
Lizbot (host) 6:10:09 PM
Hi Arlene! Thank you for listening!
George Korein 6:11:34 PM
First time I've heard you play that ID! I forgot about it. It is long!
Parrscream 6:14:50 PM
Hey Liz! Just got home from a HOT soccer practice for my son.... Sad that I have missed over an hour of this Sinead tribute.... good stuff.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 6:17:03 PM
BAAAAAAAM!
paul lanctot 6:17:30 PM
pretty sure Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2U
George Korein 6:18:04 PM
yes, that he did
paul lanctot 6:18:53 PM
did he write it for her? I think I remember hearing that.
Lizbot (host) 6:20:11 PM
@George - I've played that ID once...maybe twice...before ever! It's good but it IS long!
Lizbot (host) 6:21:15 PM
Hi Parrscream! oh boy! yeah sports practices in the summer are ROUGH. My daughter has a tennis intensive the last two weeks of august and I don't know how she's gonna manage it, the courts get SO hot! I'm glad you're here now!
Lizbot (host) 6:21:26 PM
Hi Chef!! BAM, indeed!
Lizbot (host) 6:22:01 PM
Hi Paul Ianctot - Yup, Prince Rogers Nelson!
Ossy 6:23:16 PM
Hi Space Bot Liz!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:25 PM
Hi Ossy!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:49 PM
This freaking song is so gorgeous, i can't even deal with it
Lizbot (host) 6:25:16 PM
@Ossy - How's your day going?
Lizbot (host) 6:27:04 PM
@Paul Ianctot - Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U for his side project, The Family. I have played his original version on the show before, last time I remember playing his version was for the tribute I did for him when he died! :(
Teresa P 6:28:07 PM
Hi Lizbot & all my DoublePlusBetters! My favorite Sinead song is also 'Mandinka' -- "great minds, etc."... Although Sandy Denny is my favorite all-time vocalist, I prefer Sinead's 'He Moved Through the Fair' to her version. Sinead's voice vacillates between strong and dramatic and fragile, almost to the point of the sung note being swallowed in a sob. No one does that better than Sinead did.
Bob Borowsky 6:29:29 PM
Really enjoying the tribute! I hope it doesn't sound trite, but all I could think of as I was driving home and listening was that she wrote her lyrics in blood and sang them with knives in her throat.
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 6:29:31 PM
Just remembered there was a time period when my sister called me Sinéad. I don’t remember how that came about.
Lizbot (host) 6:32:03 PM
Hi Teresa! Mandinka is just perfect. Wow, I agree, it's like she's swallowing a sob. There was no one like her. Strong words that Sandy Denny's version of He Moved Through the Fairs pales in comparison, but I agree! Love Sandy too
Ossy 6:32:49 PM
Liz - Great! How for you? Preparing for a family vacation travel adventure in August!
Lizbot (host) 6:34:18 PM
Hi Bob Borowsky - I'm glad you're listening. She didn't shy away from powerful imagery, that's for sure. There is a beauty but also a pleading urgency in there
Lizbot (host) 6:34:45 PM
@Ossy - Going down the shore in august. Where are you headed on yr trip?!
Arlene Machiavelli 6:35:04 PM
oh this is a beautiful song!
Lizbot (host) 6:35:24 PM
I cannot hear this cover without thinking of my dad playing Ralph McTell's original version of Streets of London constantly in our living room growing up
Lizbot (host) 6:36:11 PM
@Addie - You have to ask her! There was a period my brother called me "David Cassidy," but we WON'T get into that! (It had to do with a bad haircut I got in the 4th grade.)
Ossy 6:37:38 PM
Liz - Nigeria 💚🤍💚
Lizbot (host) 6:38:12 PM
@Arlene - A cover of Ralph McTell! A far better song about homelessness than the one that got popular in the U.S., Phil Collins' Another Day In Paradise
Lizbot (host) 6:38:24 PM
@Ossy - Oh wow! Have fun! How long are you going for?
Ossy 6:40:08 PM
Liz - ITil late August and thanks, sure will do!
Ossy 6:40:16 PM
*Till*
Ossy 6:42:11 PM
Lagos is very lavish there. Hear they have a pizza hut and mall shopping centers
Lizbot (host) 6:43:45 PM
@Ossy - Huh, I'd want puff-puffs and those swallows starchy dough balls I got at a Nigerian place in Detroit last summer! Came with a really tasty sauce to dip it in!
Ossy 6:46:06 PM
WOW, I knew there's African stores in USA, but never heard of that particular Nigeria place! Puff puffs are nostalgic yummi, like chin chin(a type of fried dough cookie shaped like a diamond)
Ossy 6:47:13 PM
Ever head a dish called shawarma, which is on the rise of Nigeria and just learned it's Middle East origin? https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tTP1TcwSkqqsjRgdGDw4ijOSCxPLMpNBABLJwbP&q=shawarma&rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS1068US1068&oq=shrawm&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j46i10i512j0i10i512j0i10i457i512j0i402i650j0i10i512l2j46i10i175i199i512j0i10i512.3486j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Lizbot (host) 6:49:22 PM
@Ossy - mmm, chin chin sounds good! Crunchy diamond!? The Nigerian restaurant recommendation I got from Dabls Mbad of the African Bead Museum. Listened to him talk for over an hour about Detroit history on his front porch
Lizbot (host) 6:51:36 PM
@Ossy - I've had Indian and middle eastern versions of schawarma many times, esp chicken. Lamb is common too. Haven't had a Nigerian version! WOuld like to try that!
Ossy 6:54:27 PM
First officially tried that at my cousin's house, for her daughter's christening and party!
Ossy 6:55:46 PM
About chin chin, looks like they're in different shapes. The ones I see are usually diamond shaped

I was waiting for this one!!!!

Now songs on other artists' albums that Sinead sings on, for the next four songs
richard lyons:) 7:09:39 PM
I love her song, 'Last Day of Our Acquaintance'. Thanks for playing that one!
Lizbot (host) 7:11:39 PM
@richard lyons - That is one of my all-time Sinead favorites!
Ossy 7:13:28 PM
Liz - Ikr, LOOOL and all of them smells great!!! Speaking of Philly and foods, Patty Jackson is a food auntie and on that wdas Gone But Not Forgotten series, learned that singer Billy Paul is from Philly like Phyllis Hyman!!
Shane Navoy 7:13:40 PM
Lizbot... Thank you soooo much for this show. Thank you for going thru the trouble of the deep dive. It is in times like these, the deaths of cherished musicians, that we really need tributes done by fans and very capable DJs. I am pretty sure there are plenty of listeners loving the tribute who might not be taking the time to chime in.
Lizbot (host) 7:16:10 PM
Hi Shane Navoy! You're welcome, I'm happy to do it, and I'm very much enjoying bringing three full hours of Sinéad to the airwaves, sad as the occasion that instigated it is. I really relished revisiting a lot of these songs in the past two days to put this tribute together
George Korein 7:18:11 PM
So Phyllis Hyman is also Phillies Hyman
richard lyons:) 7:19:24 PM
I didn't know this existed! Her voice is perfect with Massive Attack production.
Lizbot (host) 7:21:05 PM
@George - Philly's own
Lizbot (host) 7:21:46 PM
@richard lyons - I know! It's SO good! And she wrote these songs! Massive Attack collabs with Sinéad and with Elizabeth Fraser are so great
richard lyons:) 7:24:19 PM
Wow! Gotta find that!
Lizbot (host) 7:25:55 PM
@richard lyons - separately. The Fraser one is of course Teardrop, from the album Mezzanine, which is better known than this Sinead collab
Readie 7:29:29 PM
Hi Lizbot and friends - Thanks for this poignant tribute to Sinéad! It's a blessing ! My condolences to all who appreciate her speaking truth to power and her gorgeous voice and spirit! ❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🩹 💔
Ossy 7:29:33 PM
George - Phillies like Jazmin Sullivan, which people want her to play Sullivan in a biopic
Lizbot (host) 7:30:11 PM
Hi Readie! Well said! She was a force, truly.
Ossy 7:30:36 PM
And hi Readie Rainbow!
Lizbot (host) 7:30:36 PM
@Ossy - huh, that movie needs to be made!
Ossy 7:32:06 PM
Liz - Meant to say Sullivan should play Hyman in a biopic and yes, Hyman ABSOLUTETLY needs one! Hyman in wdas Gone But Not Forgotten summer series are one of my faves, along with Gerald Lavert and Billy Paul!
Readie 7:33:04 PM
Hi Ossy- Readie Rainbow, I like that!
Lizbot (host) 7:36:08 PM
@Ossy - Billy Paul! I love 360 degrees of BP!
Readie 7:36:32 PM
I had to write a serious educational comment on the NYT obit, written by TWO men, insensitive, specious and a disservice to her memory...I am stil a little angry - but I said my piece respectfully and thoroughly.
Readie 7:37:28 PM
And Billy Paul is pure butter!!
Lizbot (host) 7:37:49 PM
Fight the good fight, Readie!
Readie 7:38:50 PM
BTW, 5 other Sinéad articles in the Times redeemed them, I'm happy to say...
Readie 7:39:11 PM
You know it, my radio sister!!!
Readie 7:41:25 PM
Your tribute, Liz, is a balm to my soul, thank you 🤗
Lizbot (host) 7:41:37 PM
@Readie - Phew! Yeah, nobody needs that specious hateful crap. She took enough of that in her lifetime.
Mike Rand 7:42:24 PM
Thank you!
Ossy 7:43:04 PM
Liz - The past Sunday of Billy, his songs has heavy deep meaning like "One Man's Junk Is Another Mans Treasure" and "When Love Is New'!!
Readie 7:43:10 PM
Yes, Liz, it was a lazy editorial choice on the part of the Times, which isn't what it used to be...
Ossy 7:43:36 PM
And forever adore his classic "Lets Make A Baby"
Ossy 7:44:15 PM
Readie - BP as butter like Patty's happiness every Sunday night on the airwaves...and HER TEETH!!!
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 7:44:29 PM
I didn’t see the times obit. Will have to go see what’s up.
Readie 7:44:46 PM
Bright like the memory of Sinéad!
Readie 7:45:57 PM
@Addie...it's the obit I objected to, the Appraisal and other articles on her were somewhat of a rebuttal...and much needed.
Christine 7:46:16 PM
Thank you so much for this 3-hour tribute to Sinéad, Lizbot. It's been an incredible deep dive! 💔 Rest in Peace, Sinéad (Shuhada Sadaqat).
Lizbot (host) 7:46:43 PM
@Readie - And a LOT of people owe her an apology. She was right about the abuse in the church and boy did people drag her hard for so many years for that. I remember Jan Hooks playing Sinéad on SNL on a finctional Sinatra talk show after Sinatra said some nasty things about her in response to her tearing Pope John Paul II's photo. Jan's impression was a bit harsh
Lizbot (host) 7:47:03 PM
Hi Christine! I'm so glad you were listening!
Lizbot (host) 7:47:41 PM
Hi Mike Rand - You're welcome! Thanks for tuning in!
Readie 7:48:16 PM
Yes @Liz, and Joe Pesci and Madonna were disgraceful to her.
Lizbot (host) 7:48:30 PM
@Readie - That's for sure. The paper "of note" has taken a steep dive downwards
Lizbot (host) 7:49:07 PM
@Ossy - Billy Paul is epic. He wrote so many classics!
Christine 7:49:12 PM
Sorry I haven't been in the chat tonight. Hi, everybody! I've just been taking in the music. Thank you for this excellence, Lizbot! 💯
Readie 7:49:19 PM
Totally agree, Liz...and when they fired their copy editors...well you know what a mistake that was!
Readie 7:50:03 PM
Hi Christine! Nice to see you!
Christine 7:50:26 PM
Hi, Readie 🌈!
Ossy 7:50:27 PM
Liz - Harsh of them to come at Sinead like that, similar to people's untrue accusations of Michael Jackson, after his passing
Ossy 7:51:03 PM
Liz - So for real of BP!!
Rob from Maryland 7:51:22 PM
This has been a wonderful (albeit sad) show tonight, Lizbot. Many thanks for digging through the albums!
Lizbot (host) 7:51:41 PM
@Readie - People shamelessly jumped on the bandwagon of hating on her. I remember plenty of people who hadn't even heard her music, or anything beyond Nothing Compares 2 U, trashing her just because other ppl were, not even because they were offended. And then I think about all those silenced victims of the systemic abuse in the church and I think how much her actions and her songs must have meant to many of them
Readie 7:51:43 PM
😘
Christine 7:52:16 PM
Hi Ossy, Shane, Addie, Teresa, George, Rob & all!
richard lyons:) 7:52:22 PM
Absolutely, Lizbot!
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 7:52:45 PM
Hi Christine!!
Readie 7:53:32 PM
@Liz, yes, and the survivors of the abuse and cover-ups are still owed so much. The hypocrisy is staggering!
Ossy 7:54:18 PM
Hi Christine!
Readie 7:54:37 PM
But hail up Sinéad, and may her music and spirit be a blessing!
Number 6 7:54:56 PM
Thanks for this great tribute! It's almost 2 AM over here, time for bed. BCNU!
Arlene Machiavelli 7:55:46 PM
I remember when she tore up the Pope on SNL and how absolutely amazed by her I was, and how as a teen (who survived Catholic school but was in trouble every damn day) I took her side and was so mad at everyone witch burning her, like celebrities, and how it was now cool to mock her. I remember how mad that made me. She was so brave.
Ossy 7:55:57 PM
Spectacular "Gone But Not Forgotten" tribute of Sinead, Space Lady Lizbot!
Readie 7:55:58 PM
Beannacht í a cuimhne!
Lizbot (host) 7:56:14 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:58:43 PM

Readie 7:59:24 PM

Really don’t want the show to end! Alas!
