Power to the Peasants

So remember, your day could be much worse.

Howdy team. As usual, I'm thrilled to be here in order to carry your lazy asses across the midday slump. Refresh this page to see the most recently-played songs, and be sure to check in and say hello in the chat. I forgot to mention it last week, but I met up with Tom and Eva (proprietors of our Spinitron playlist system) at the NFCB conference and had a long talk with them about the playlist chat function. I expressed my concern about Facebook or Google logins being required for chat entry, especially since so many people are fleeing the former and have increasing distrust of the latter. As such, they are taking it under consideration and hope to implement an authentication system for the chat that uses some other, non-privacy-stealing means (such as a one-time code sent to your mobile phone, or something else along those lines.) Updates will be passed along to you as I receive them, and hopefully a solution will ignite more interest in the chat.

In the meantime, there's lots of great new records to spin for you today before I beat it out of here and drive into NYC for the annual dinner meeting of WPRB oldsters. Hopefully the bar's bathrooms aren't in the basement a la the Erfurt example cited above.

Colin 12:08:38 PM
happy noon on hump day. is this the crest of the 9 to 5 work week? is it all downhill from here?
Mike Lupica (host) 12:10:17 PM
I HAVE ONLY MIXED MESSAGES AT THIS TIME.
Colin 12:11:05 PM
lol, mission accomplished
richard lyons:) 12:11:25 PM
I have to dig out my False Front CD. I forgot how much I like that song.
Colin 12:12:09 PM
one of the last shows I played in the before times (2019) was opening for False Front, the guys are still ati it!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:12:43 PM
I re-discover this record every few years or so. Glad I'm not the only one who digs it.
Colin 12:18:54 PM
re-discovering albums is fun! especially if it still holds up. it's reaffirming to say I did get it 30 years ago!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:19:41 PM
Yes, where is the 30th anniversary expanded edition on 180g multicolor vinyl with digital download coupon? KRAMER, I'M LOOKIN' AT YOU.
richard lyons:) 12:26:07 PM
Solid start! especially loved the Bobby Lee and Peter Jefferies. A different chat login method would be great!
Mike Lupica (host) 12:27:10 PM
Thanks Richard! Yes, my thinking (as very well articulated by WPRB's Freddie) is that WPRB and Spinitron are both mom and pop businesses with shared goals and values. So why come we gotta involve Zuck in what should be a very simple handshake?
Colin 12:29:34 PM
Erfurt re-make of this song, "the noblemen are falling into the poo-pit"
Mike Lupica (host) 12:30:19 PM
I don't know about any of you, but I'm going to be thinking about the Erfurt Latrine Disaster for the rest of my life.
Colin 12:32:37 PM
anytime now when i walk into a crowded room, tests floor stability, asks, what's below us right now.
Brian D 12:33:09 PM
Good ol False Front and good ol Shimmy Disc. Rev B Il (Bill Fowler)of Sound of Urchin. Guy Heller aka Dickie Moist et al. I think they reunite occasionally... Guy curated a fest at various bars in New Hope years back. NxNH. Saw Joe Jack Talcum of Dead Milkmen play in the stark (indoor) sunlight of mid afternoon during that once. Great time
richard lyons:) 12:34:42 PM
Bettie Serveert!!🖤
Brian D 12:37:40 PM
Erfurt Latrine Disaster missed song opportunity. Bee Gees and Gordon Lightfoot collab that never happened. They would have done it justice.
Brian D 12:39:03 PM
It's a very 1991 apropes lp title
Marcus Watt 12:40:48 PM
Ack, ack, ack.... Sorry, I had a coughing fit when I started to dictate this text.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:41:08 PM
Three-pointer, Marcus! (I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.)
Brian D 12:42:35 PM
Bowie also re synths. He said something like how when they first started getting into synths they'd throw out the instruction manual and just go hog wild and the synth would emit these farting noises etc
Mike Lupica (host) 12:43:08 PM
I've always called in The Big Brown Line. (A term which I believe was coined eons ago by Jen from Running Redlights.)
Brian D 12:44:06 PM
Brown is a state of mind. Speaking of Shimmy Disc and their associated bands etc
richard lyons:) 12:45:04 PM
This is Awesome!!!!
Colin 12:45:46 PM
whoa, this melodic mash up!
Brian D 12:45:48 PM
Square waves and saw tooths (sic)
Colin 12:47:47 PM
the sine wave = the well behaved kid of the wave family
richard lyons:) 12:53:13 PM
The hits just keep comin'. Lots of new bookmarks
Brian D 1:02:38 PM
Mentioned in last show chat... if in an alternate universe there existed another NJ radio station said station might have Big Blood play at their venue that sounds like a game show host....
Mike Lupica (host) 1:02:57 PM
LOL. I bought my tix last night, Brian.
Brian D 1:03:16 PM
Here's link for Big Blood show if it falls within compliance regulations to post it here (if not Erase) : https://www.eventbrite.com/e/big-blood-tickets-672099767497?aff=erelexpmlt
Mike Lupica (host) 1:03:44 PM
Totally fine to promote here! I think it's the only area gig they're playing, unless there's been some word on a Philly date?
Mike Lupica (host) 1:03:58 PM
Shit, they could play in my backyard.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:05:21 PM
All 45 set comin' up next!
Brian D 1:05:47 PM
SO WANNA GO. Yeah, no other gigs this year showing. Big Blood do not have much current postings on their website but... maybe that means I'm just way old school innerwebs and don't ever look for those social meeeja sites... i got work to do and all
richard lyons:) 1:08:46 PM
Volcano Suns 🖤🔥
Brian D 1:09:43 PM
I mean... they are a band that has a po box on their site that encourages good ol paper mail correspondence so that's way cool. Been meaning to drop them a line. Big Blood really strikes my inner ear well. Looks like a fun live show from pics I see online
richard lyons:) 1:10:00 PM

Mike Lupica (host) 1:18:52 PM
Accidentally cued up the instrumental side of this Willie Henderson single. Just imagine him singing in high falsetto: "GET ON DOWN, WITH THE DANCE MASTER, WONTCHA GET ON DOWN, WITH THE DANCE MASTER."
Mike Lupica (host) 1:19:14 PM
Also love that this is on Playboy's record label.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:19:57 PM
Also, this is the most "old school at noon" the all-45 set has gotten yet this summer.
Brian D 1:21:46 PM
I have subscribed to the newsletter of this set
Brian D 1:22:38 PM
Octave divider stomp box on the guitar. Sounds like. Much fun
Mike Lupica (host) 1:23:20 PM
Yes, such a wicked sound on that track. That's why that song still starts FIRES on a dance floor.
Jon Solomon 1:25:41 PM
Enjoyed hearing some Volcano Suns, Dance Master.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:26:11 PM
YOU, sir, are the Dance Master of which Willie Henderson spake.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:26:29 PM
Just not on that version because I accidentally cued up the instrumental.
Jon Solomon 1:27:37 PM
I'm calling you Dance Master the rest of the day, Dance Master.
Brian D 1:30:33 PM

Mike Lupica (host) 1:32:28 PM

Of course they are.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:53:58 PM
In a chaotic and infinite universe, anything that can happen WILL happen. Eventually.
Marcus Watt 1:54:08 PM
No surprise Mark E. loved this one.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:54:23 PM
Did the Fall cover this?
Joliet Mok 1:55:44 PM
Dead Milkmen show on Friday was 🤘 ..in the Laurel Hill Cemetery 🪦
Joliet Mok 1:56:30 PM
New album is old school Milkmen
Marcus Watt 1:56:42 PM
Extricate, I think.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:57:10 PM
@Marcus, I don't have enough room in my brain to remember #FallFacts anymore.
Marcus Watt 2:12:37 PM
Hi, JM. Big Milkmen fan. I saw them open for the Replacements at the Tower on their first tour with Slim.
Brian D 2:19:41 PM

Brian D 2:23:01 PM
Just read Steve Hanley's book "The Big Midweek: Life Inside The Fall". Bass man tells most. Great stories
Brian D 2:27:05 PM
I think title of his book refers to how the Fall would climb the charts during the middle of the week thanks to diehard fans buying up the singles /lps as soon as they were released and requesting songs etc. Then when weekend rolled around.. the bigger bands on big labels would eclipse them. Buried in the midst of the book somewhere he mentions that
Marcus Watt 2:29:26 PM
Dan Buskirk has two free movies tomorrow night. First is the Ian Dury bio pic. I forget the second. Check The Rotunda for details.
richard lyons:) 2:30:12 PM
Thanks for the tunes! Great show!
Brian D 2:34:49 PM
#5 Untitled. They don't make song titles like that no mo

Mike Lupica (host) 2:35:31 PM
OH! I see. Never mind!
Mike Lupica (host) 2:35:53 PM
My Spanish has gotten pretty shite.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:37:00 PM
And so have my segues, apparently.
Brian D 2:38:32 PM
Waldo Jeffries tale in BOTH CHANNELS! Bonus. Stereo 103.3 indeed.
Brian D 2:38:50 PM
Jeffers that is
Mike Lupica (host) 2:39:19 PM
Haha. A cautionary tale for the ages.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:40:52 PM
To all of you who are listening while trying to work and are feeling your body tense up while listening to this story, I APPLAUD YOU.
Marcus Watt 2:41:49 PM
Sorry, Mike. Most versions of The Gift have more audible John Cale renditions.
Brian D 2:43:21 PM
Getting the FedEx economy rates vs expedited... brb... how much does Waldo weigh btw? Any idea on the dims?
Marcus Watt 2:44:22 PM
Waldo Jeffers. Whatever happened to him?
Brian D 2:46:13 PM
Hitchcock would be proud of that little "bonk" sound effect right at the climactic moment there. IT'S ART!
Mike Lupica (host) 2:46:47 PM
Marcus, I heard he got into shipping containers. (Rimshot)
Brian D 2:47:40 PM
Even better in the headphones. The Murder Mystery even betterer. Loved seeing that in the Lou Reed lyrics book all laid out side by side (Murder Mystery that is)
Brian D 2:49:15 PM
Image search results of Waldo Jeffers show some people having fun posing in cardboard boxes
Mike Lupica (host) 2:52:11 PM
Haha, that's fantastic!
Mike Lupica (host) 2:53:49 PM
Well we certainly GOT INTO A MOOD for this last set.
David Shortell 2:56:21 PM
I was listening to you play "The Gift" in my car. It didn't occur to me to play with the balance/fader so I could discern the story.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:56:54 PM
Let's hear it for stereo separation!
David Shortell 2:59:42 PM
Did anyone here besides me see the Monks at the Westbeth Theatre Center in 1999?
Peter Sukeena 3:00:57 PM
What was that outro song in the background just now?
