I'm back from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters conference with a bad case of jetlag, a belly full of convention center food, and more community radio station swag than you can shake a set of XLR cables at. Also, a bunch of great new records to spin for you on this criminally humid day. A great time was had and I'm so proud to have represented WPRB at this annual meeting of non-commercial broadcasting allies. Thanks to Sally, Lisa, Ernesto, Eva, David, Becky, Téa, Freddie, Herb, and all of the other fine folks I spent time with last week. For today's program, I invite you to come for the freeform radio, but to stay for the KVMR rolling papers.

Happy day after the 4th of July!

hey hay!
richard lyons:) 12:06:49 PM
busted economic theory trickling down
iamthelabhras 12:07:06 PM
Dude if you think Denver is bizarre you should visit Boulder.
Rofflestomp 12:07:13 PM
Level up!
Rofflestomp 12:08:45 PM
Those front range afternoon storms are rather cool too.
Rofflestomp 12:09:20 PM
Boulder is "high" on the weird list for sure.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:09:29 PM
Yo. Sorry for the wonky levels at the start there. Things were all kindsa messed up.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:09:49 PM
Boulder is on my list! Didn't have time this go-around, but definitely planning on it next time.
iamthelabhras 12:12:57 PM
This Schaubroeck track has big GROB energy! To my ears anyway...
Rofflestomp 12:12:59 PM
Those huge high plateau's you can see to the northwest of Denver are awesome all day long.
Gautham Kalva 12:13:12 PM
This Armand Schaubroeck seems to be an interesting dude..
Mike Lupica (host) 12:16:38 PM
Please explain me GROB?
iamthelabhras 12:17:11 PM
I'm not sure GROB is something that can be explained. GROB needs to be experienced.
iamthelabhras 12:17:28 PM
One sec. I'll find a link to one of the previous WPRBXmas GROB tracks...

Looks like something Jon Solomon could easily play for Xmas, :)
iamthelabhras 12:25:17 PM
Oh, Jon has. Many times!
Rofflestomp 12:25:41 PM
Ah! Makes sense.
richard lyons:) 12:29:39 PM
pass the rolling papers, please
Mike Lupica (host) 12:30:56 PM
Yes! KVMR really knocked it out of the park with those. Happy to report that the WPRB tattoos I brought with me also went like hotcakes.
richard lyons:) 12:38:57 PM
Nice! Killer opening set, Mr. Lupica!
Colin 12:42:10 PM
amazing radio station sticker haul!!
DSM 12:42:43 PM
Hey Mike, enjoyed the empty Scooby Doo towns comparison to Denver.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:43:23 PM
@Colin, that's only the first day's haul! All of those (and many more) are now pasted up here on the equipment rack in the Barge.
Mike Lupica (host) 12:43:49 PM
@DSM, thanks! Very weird vibe. I did feel like I could live there, which is not something I usually say about places that aren't NJ or NYC.
Colin 12:45:52 PM
I have a large frame with plastic surface, picked up at a thrift shop and contained a giant Lamborghini poster or something, that I use as a sticker surface that can be re-curated to different locations around the home.
DSM 12:46:01 PM
I haven’t been in like 15 years. I think Neil Michael Hagerty calls it home these days?
DSM 12:46:44 PM
Lambos are siiiiiick
Mike Lupica (host) 12:47:17 PM
I think NMH is having some major personal problems, last I heard.
DSM 12:48:48 PM
Ayeee
richard lyons:) 12:59:28 PM
HS! Helzz yeah!!!
Mike Lupica (host) 1:02:23 PM
He's so awesome. Would love to see about getting him down to the studio.
richard lyons:) 1:04:18 PM
That would be amazing!

omg but missed combustible edison
Mike Lupica (host) 1:22:30 PM
Note: She's playing it cool, but I have it on solid confidence that Essential Logic starts playing every time Commie Francis walks into a room.
Commie Francis ☭ 1:22:49 PM

Mike Lupica (host) 1:29:43 PM
This is a particularly sleaze version of Wild Thing.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:29:48 PM
*sleazy
Mary Jones 1:34:13 PM
Just want to check in and say thanks for making cleaning out my house for a move a lot more entertaining than it could be.

I live to serve, Mary. Good luck!
Mary Jones 1:35:59 PM
Thanks!
Rob from Maryland 1:40:46 PM
I remember hearing this Bryan Ferry song on Radio Luxembourg in 1973, broadcasting British top 30 all over western Europe after 8 or 9 pm. Thank you for playing it, Mike!
Rob from Maryland 1:41:07 PM
*I was living in Italy at the time (and was in high school)
Mike Lupica (host) 1:42:14 PM
Nice, Rob! Now, EVERYONE: Share your memories of hearing Abacab.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:43:21 PM
I really dislike Genesis but I have always loved this song. Got a stern talkin' to years ago my the store manager of at an allnite grocery store who didn't like the fact that I appeared to be "rocking out" (his term) in the frozen foods sectio while listening to it on my iPod.
Rob from Maryland 1:43:54 PM
What a frozen lump your manager was
Mike Lupica (host) 1:43:58 PM
As you can see, "rocking out" is still affecting my ability to spell and assemble a coherent sentence.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:44:51 PM
Also, I was merely shopping, not working. I only work in places where rocking out is tolerated, if not encouraged.
DSM 1:44:58 PM
I hope that guy has thawed out since then!
Rob from Maryland 1:45:00 PM
My memories of Abacab? Catching it on the AOR radio stations in DC in the car while driving around
Mike Lupica (host) 1:45:14 PM
MIKE RUTHERFORD SEND ME TO HELL
richard lyons:) 1:45:15 PM
I somehow convinced many of the high schools in Montana to hire me to DJ dances. Abacab was a favorite.
Rofflestomp 1:45:30 PM
Pretty much the last Genisis album that had elements that I liked.
Rob from Maryland 1:46:32 PM
Roffle, my feelings too
Boney Mok 1:50:44 PM
sleezy guitar. I like that moniker
Billy O'Damit 1:50:52 PM
I ran into Mike Rutherford at LAX he sat his suitcase down for me to get a picture of him a bed sheet was sticking out and in the photo it looks like a kilo of blow was pouring out onto the floor. They were real good that night in L.A.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:52:54 PM
Hahaha, fantastic!
Rob from Maryland 1:57:25 PM
I just listened to Fancy's "Wild Thing" and I dimly recall having heard it when it was on the charts. I'm now on to their other US hit "Touch Me" and I have no recollection of ever having heard it.
Mike Lupica (host) 1:58:48 PM
Let the record show: The Fancy revival began RIGHT HERE, TODAY, IN THE EYES OF GOD, AND WITH ALL OF AS WITNESSES.
Rob from Maryland 2:00:59 PM
Green silk twisted around a light beige notebook :-D
Rob from Maryland 2:01:16 PM
I wish I'd heard that piece in 1979!
DSM 2:04:19 PM
This feels like when you're at a group dinner you don't want to be at and you're just nodding blankly and zoning out
Mike Lupica (host) 2:04:31 PM
Yes, new to me but thought this was really great! Kinda reminded me of that Cheri Knight record from a while back. Also, Pamela Z.
Rofflestomp 2:06:13 PM
Shades O' Philip Glass
Gautham Kalva 2:08:37 PM
Ellen Zweig Song plays like when I have wprb playing out from my laptop, on my phone and Alexa at the same time and there is just a milli second delay between them.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:09:29 PM
Haha, nice Gautham! I can relate!
richard lyons:) 2:09:49 PM
This Algiers is so good
Mike Lupica (host) 2:13:55 PM
Super arresting album for sure. I really like Lee Bains, so I was drawn to that one right out of the gate.
Jon Solomon 2:14:11 PM
Was surprised to learn this week that the first DLJ record is not officially on streaming.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:14:38 PM
As others will surely note later on today, RIP Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork, Hot Snakes, Obits. https://www.npr.org/2023/07/02/1185707046/rick-froberg-appreciation-hot-snakes-drive-like-jehu-punk
Mike Lupica (host) 2:15:03 PM
This song was THEE smash hit single the summer I started DJing at WPRB.
Boney Mok 2:16:06 PM
55 natural causes? uhhh no
Mike Lupica (host) 2:16:21 PM
Yeah, not on Bandcamp either. Had to go into deep External Hard Drive Pergatory to extract this one.
Jon Solomon 2:17:47 PM
Mike, did you go see Drive Like Jehu at Maxwell's in the early 1990s when the "opening act" was a long, black & white art film called Hippie Porn?
Mike Lupica (host) 2:18:27 PM
I definitely saw them there, but I don't think it was that show. (Because that sounds like something I would remember.)
Mike Lupica (host) 2:18:58 PM
Pretty sure I saw them on the Yank Crime tour, so probably after that.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:19:57 PM
We are going ALL IN on 90s post-hardcore anthems right now,eh?
Jon Solomon 2:20:09 PM
I think the band was a last-minute addition to the bill.
Jen Redlights 2:21:07 PM
I tuned in at just the right moment! RIP Rick
Mike Lupica (host) 2:23:49 PM
Jen, IIRC you were the one who ran out and bought a copy of the Pitchfork LP for PRB's stacks after Drive Like Jehu got real big here!
Jen Redlights 2:25:10 PM
Pitchfork was one of my all-time favorites, so that makes sense. It was a critical gap! Nice when it was reissued later as well.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:26:39 PM
Pouring some out for that Pier Platters re-rock cheddar right about now.
Jon Solomon 2:27:19 PM
Dude was a teenager in Pitchfork!
Jon Solomon 2:28:39 PM
Found some photos from when Obits recorded at WPRB, in typical "me" fashion no pictures of the actual band playing but one shot I wish was less blurry of an Obits road case in front of an Audit In Progress poster.
Jen Redlights 2:29:45 PM
@jon that was something i realized only this week! (the age thing)
Mike Lupica (host) 2:30:07 PM
I lost track of Hot Snakes after their first album, never got to properly investigate Obits. Lots of catchup homework on my plate.
Jon Solomon 2:31:39 PM
There's a swankiness to the Obits material I think you will enjoy a great deal, Mike.
Mike Lupica (host) 2:36:01 PM
On it. (Says the guy who is currently cueing up a Fred Lane LP.)
Mattster of Reality 2:36:31 PM
