@Lizbot, Great Horned, Barred, Spotted, and Great Gray Owls all hoot. Eastern- & Western-Screech-Owls whistle, Barn Owls screech, Long- and Short-eared Owls bark (and hoot).

@Lizbot, how nice. We had occasional screech owls on our block until a pair of the larger Barred Owl started nesting nearby. We have only had one Eastern Screech-Owl since.

Did I ever tell you my husband's cousin is married to an avid jogger who jogs every morning on a trail in Shelburne Farms in Vermont and one morning on his usual route he was viciously attacked by a very large...maybe Great Horned?...owl! Talons right to the face! He was shook! He thinks it might have had a nest nearby. It was early, like 5:30 or 6 am

@Lizbot, I found an old/new ad. The owl looks like a generic owl (with 'ears'). Since the body is kind of short, it sort of looks like a screech owl

@Lizbot, larger (Barred/Great Horned) owls have been heard hooting, drawing ever closer to a calling screech owl, until the smaller screech owl just stops calling, sometimes after a muffled call. Predation in action

@Rob from Maryland - I handled birds of prey, including some owls, at The Academy of Natural Sciences as a teenager. I couldnt tell you know what species we had back then, this was the early 90s, but I DO remember spending quite a bit of time collecting their pellets for dissection and thawing frozen mouse-sicles for them. I also learned how to handle them without provoking their ire, but sometimes they just didn't want to perch on me and I had to just respect that

@Lizbot, screech owls, Little Owls, Scops Owls (both Eurasian), Burrowing Owls, and other smaller species are surely gentle and patient
