Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 8:22:38 PM
Jon's May The Fourth show was a lot of fun last year.
Lizbot (host) 8:22:49 PM
@Christine - ahha, and it accompanies some thrill-a-minute library research in video game form (I kid you not!)
Lizbot (host) 8:23:42 PM
@iamthelabhras - Thanks for the Rainstick Orchestra reminder! THat's a band I've seen pop up in Ninja Tune samplers and always meant to delve into!
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 8:24:35 PM

Mätt Såbbåth 8:26:20 PM

richard lyons:) 8:26:34 PM
Hi Darth Uhuru!! :D
Lizbot (host) 8:26:40 PM
@TAndy - See, THAT is one of the reasons I jumped on this last-minute emergency subbing! My family is downtown working on a project and I was just sorta being unproductive and drifting off into a sleepy fog when I got the sub signal. I like a last-minute challenge!
Dennnisons 8:26:53 PM
Hey sub, and all y’all!
Lizbot (host) 8:27:23 PM
Hey Dennisons!
richard lyons:) 8:27:49 PM

Lizbot (host) 8:28:49 PM
@iamthelabhras - Writing it down for later! Maybe it'll appear on Wednesday night's show! I still gotta figure out what I'll be playing then!
richard lyons:) 8:28:51 PM
'The sub signal' indeed!!!! Glad you answered the call
Dennnisons 8:29:04 PM

Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 8:33:14 PM
You are intrepid souls, truly.
Lizbot (host) 8:34:03 PM
@Mary Jones - When I lived 2 blocks from the Broad St route I was always blown away by how many people turn up, even in inclement weather! I think it's the largest 10-mi race in the country?
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 8:34:04 PM
Big love to David of Practical Electronics! Hope to enjoy his final show(s) before the summer schedule change 💔
Lizbot (host) 8:35:01 PM
@Mary - Your observation about The Lost Boys' two groups of characters basically being The Freaks & The Geeks was SPOT-ON! It's so true
Mary Jones 8:35:13 PM
@Lizbot yeah, something like 35K+ this year, which blew my mind.
Mary Jones 8:36:29 PM
@Lizbot yeah, the Freaks and Geeks thing was really good, I meant to expand on it, but figured if you know you know.
Lizbot (host) 8:37:06 PM
@Mary Jones - Geezzuss! That's crazy! Hattie & George were in Center City so Hattie could film some scenes for a short film she's been working on, and it was challenging getting around to all the shoot locations with all the road closures, but it was cool seeing all the runners!
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 8:37:12 PM
That was a tasty Sparks/Sinatra/Sparks/sammich 🥪
Lizbot (host) 8:37:56 PM
@TAndy / Matt Sabbath - Yung Niel drops the needle, and the damage is done
Mary Jones 8:38:32 PM
Oh man, and what a day to be out filming🌊
Lizbot (host) 8:38:51 PM
@Christine - haha, yeah, I have Sparks songs for just about every theme imaginable! These were some of the Secrets/Spies ones I DIDN'T fit into last Thursday's show, and I already had other Sparks songs then!
Lizbot (host) 8:39:47 PM
@Dennnisons / @Mary - I saw a soaked Jon photo, but no soaked Jon. WPRB Community runners UNITE!
Mary Jones 8:41:05 PM
@Lizbot if I have one regret about today is that I wasn’t able to see Jon after the race, but it was raining *hard* and it was so cold—and I am a slowwww runner, he would’ve been done long before me.
Lizbot (host) 8:41:38 PM
I can't not sing along to this song. And it's giving me shore anticipation vibes. I gotta break out the Desmond Dekker as least once per season down the shore
Lizbot (host) 8:42:54 PM
@Mary Jones - yeah, it was pretty damn chilly out! Soup weather! I hope you got somewhere warm and dry quickly!

Two crazy weeks, with plenty of exuberance and memorable moments. And some dream-team pairings.
Lizbot (host) 8:51:54 PM
@Christine - Well you're getting a taste of last Thursday's theme now with these "Overflow Secrets!"- Secrets & Spies songs I didn't get to last week!
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 8:53:26 PM
I'm loving the secrets overspill! ✨️
Lizbot (host) 8:53:57 PM
@Mary Jones - Re: filming in this crazy weather! - Hattie just had to just these last scenes of her film done, weather be damned, cuz it's due on Thursday and it's her big 8th grade Final Project she's been working on since September!
Lizbot (host) 8:54:29 PM
@Mary Jones - That's actually where George & Hattie are right now! STILL downtown in this lousy weather, getting final scenes shot

Dennnisons 9:04:08 PM
I played the c-64 version of Spy vs Spy, I don’t know how it’s different it is to the NES version.
Lizbot (host) 9:04:58 PM
@iamthelabhras - Haddonfield! I haven't lived there since the mid-90s, but yup, I hail from the town of Michael Myers and Debra Hill
Lizbot (host) 9:05:50 PM
@Dennnisons - I probably spent enough money renting this game that I could have bought it, but it seemed decadent to buy games back then. NES games were not cheap! I never saw the C-64 version!
Lizbot (host) 9:07:07 PM
@Dennnisons - I have a handful of albums by a German duo called Welle:Erdball who composed and performed their songs entirely on Commodore 64s!
Dennnisons 9:07:21 PM
@lizbot I would think it would be the same, 2 monitors where you see each spy and set traps for the other… oooooh, beepy goodness
Dennnisons 9:08:11 PM

Lizbot (host) 9:14:01 PM

iamthelabhras 9:17:02 PM
@Lizbot you are melting my brain.

Dennnisons 9:19:47 PM
I never heard of Roberta Williams, reading up on her she sounds awesome. I kind of missed the NES and Kings Quest.
Lizbot (host) 9:20:30 PM
@iamthelabhras - I loved the weeping willow in King's Quest V! Some time I gotta dig up that soundtrack! The ice level in that game had some many glitches, there were areas where Graham could just walk on air!
iamthelabhras 9:21:12 PM
@Dennnisons, PushingUpRoses has a great 16 minutes video essay on her over at YouTube. Check it out!
Lizbot (host) 9:22:24 PM
@iamthelabhras - oh man, 90% of my computer games were Sierra...some LucasArts thrown in
iamthelabhras 9:22:59 PM
Of course. Indiana Jones. Monkey Island, obviously.
Lizbot (host) 9:23:07 PM
@Dennnisons - oh MAN. She was an icon! The ONLY woman game designer who reached mainstream success back then!
iamthelabhras 9:23:14 PM
Sam & Max. Another underrated cult classic.
Lizbot (host) 9:24:12 PM
This theme is the ONLY time I will probably ever play this INSANE Mr. Bungle hidden track!
Lizbot (host) 9:24:46 PM
Also, he just straight-up sounds like Grandpa Simpson on that track
Dennnisons 9:27:26 PM
@iamthelabhras cool, thanks!
iamthelabhras 9:28:18 PM
No worries, Dennnisons! If this stuff is up your alley, I also highly recommend the documentary Get Lamp. It dives into the REALLY old school text-based adventures. Lots of interesting stuff in there.
Dennnisons 9:31:22 PM
@iamthelabhras that sounds awesome! I played a bit of Zork back then, a lot of typing things like “go left” “go west” “go door” “just go” on a blank screen back then.
Dennnisons 9:34:02 PM
@lizbot do you remember the arcade game Elevator Action? Where you’re a spy who zip lines to the top of a building (from spy heaven, I guess) and take elevators down through a hotel while shadowy guys come out of doors to shoot at you.
Lizbot (host) 9:34:41 PM
"Bean bags, bingo and a Playstation Five"
iamthelabhras 9:35:53 PM
I am so pissed I missed these guys at UT back in February.
Lizbot (host) 9:35:57 PM
@iamthelabhras - oh wow, I gotta check that out! My husband and I are always talking about old text-based adventures. His dad was a programmer who tried to make a game in the 80s.
Lizbot (host) 9:36:18 PM
@iamthelabhras - yeah, same!
Lizbot (host) 9:37:59 PM
@Dennnisons - whoa! That sounds vaguely familiar....I don't expressly remember that name but that description rings a bell...It sounds awesome!
Lizbot (host) 9:41:31 PM
@Dennnisons - Roberta Williams' games for Sierra always involved picking up various items lying in the path - axe, rope, honey, etc - and then typing "use axe" on some impassable spot. There were always silly uses, like repair rope with honey!
Dennnisons 9:41:47 PM
@lizbot it’s mostly jumping and kneeling to avoid bullets then shooting back. I just looked up the song but it didn’t sound especially spyish, but I loved the look of the game.
Dennnisons 9:43:32 PM
Our friend Bree is a big fan of those games, especially of Monkey Island. I feel like I missed out.
Lizbot (host) 9:45:56 PM
@Dennnisons - That game sounds like Rush N' Attack, one of the few NES games I actually owned, so I played it a LOT. Lots of lying on one's stomach and getting stabby with yr little knife and occasionally tossing a grenade. That game was the most jam-packed with crates and barrels and more crates to jump and run on!
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 9:46:22 PM

I never understood why Portlandia put down Talk Talk in that preschool kids music bit they did. The one with the guy from Modest Mouse?

@Christine - As I recall, I think I was gonna play this one for my sophisticating-pops theme show back in the fall, but I didn't get to it!
Lizbot (host) 9:48:58 PM
@iamthelabhras - oh my gosh, the sketch where the parents are trying to curate the preschool's music library?! haha, I remember the episode well, but had forgotten that they trashed Talk Talk in that sketch!
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 9:49:27 PM
Woo! 💯
iamthelabhras 9:49:41 PM
@Lizbot The one & only.
Lizbot (host) 9:49:48 PM
@iamthelabhras - Fred & Carrie better not go around besmirching Talk Talk again
Dennnisons 9:51:17 PM
@lizbot I remember Rush’n Attack! You’d lay on your belly and stab guys in the toe. They had it at the 7-11 in Wyndmoor.
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 9:54:37 PM
Not a sausage to do...
Lizbot (host) 9:54:58 PM
@Dennnisons - Yes! Oh man, I would be in that 7-1-1 all the time if I didn't have that game at home as a kid, but my haddonfield lacked any games whatsoever. Fast-forward decades to the early 2000s - George & I lived on 5th & Thompson and the local greasy pizza spot had an arcade game called Rootbeer Tapper, which involved sliding rootbeers to impatient and rowdy costumers. The game was def from the 80s. The best level?? The angry mohawked punk customers level!
Lizbot (host) 9:55:08 PM
@Christine - haha!
Lizbot (host) 9:55:55 PM
@Dennnisons - George loved monkey island, but I never had (or saw for rent in ellis st video) that one!
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 9:56:14 PM
Oh, Eno. This song is really sticky, too. It get stuck in my brain for hours.
Christine, aka Darth Uhuru 9:56:42 PM

Lizbot (host) 10:01:45 PM
@Dennnisons - if George hadn't been busy with Hattie's filming projects, ferrying her around center city all evening, I'm SURE He'd have gone on a lengthy tirade about his favorite computer and console games from back int he day!
