Capt. Ahab, there was a listener who passed away 1-2 years ago named John who passed away about 2 years ago. I bet you remember him. You were his favorite DJ!

Hi Jerry- I hadn't heard of John S.'s passing- he called my show every week back in the day! So sorry to hear this...he sent me such interesting music and video over the years, and introduced me to Exuma!

I wish there was more information about John's passing online. I have emailed the person who was supposed to be in charge of his estate (he wanted to bequeath me a bunch of his stereo equipment) but there was no response.

Readie: it was so sad, I'm not sure we ever got 100% confirmation but I wrote him and didn't hear back, a google search turned up an obituary of a person with the same

@Jon, he always told me he was going to leave all his music, equipment, etc. to WPRB!

Yeah. He was always talking about being in poor health but it always seemed to work out. Email me Read and I can tell you a bit more.

@Captain Ahab - yes, so sad...he kept me updated on his health, etc. and had sucjh a passion for the music & WPRB!

I experience it (just about) every year in New York state at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival and way down in New Jersey at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival! I've missed only a few years here n there in the past 24 years

Been playing mandolin about 25-30 years, guitar 40 years. Some other stringed instruments in the mix too. As many attendees / campers can attest, some of the most exciting music is in the parking lots and campgrounds at these fests!

David "Dawg" Grisman also plays straight ahead Bluegrass. Then and now. He named one of his sons Monroe! Another son named Sam no doubt after Sam Bush , David's peer and friend mandolin great. Saw the DG Quintet many times in the 90s 2000s. And the DG Bluegrass band in the last 2 decades at said festivals. He gives a great Bluegrass history lesson during that band's sets! Very informative

I might attend a hootenanny by the HillBenders tonight at Ocean County College’s Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts (1 College Drive, Toms River, NJ). They call the show “WhoGrass”: bluegrass versions of the Who’s catalog. In 2015, they released the album “Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry”. Pete Townsend likes them!

I saw the Hillbenders do the entire "Tommy" lp a few times last decade! So well done. Not hokey not jokey. They really do it justice.

The band had a psychedelic hearse that they drove around it. Danny's brother is a great classical guitarist.

I read that Sweet Stavin Chain opened for the Who in 1968. Lee Ving turned 73 this month. Incredible. And Kim Gordon turns 70 today.

Tony Rice as well. And Clarence White. 2 guitar pickers that moved the instrument forward in 'grass. Gtr was often a strictly rhythm instrument not quite having the loud presence to compete w the naturally loud banjo and mandolin. But as the sound systems and microphone tech advanced so did players like them. And history was made and continues to evolve for the guitar!
