Looks like he was playing about 4 years prior to Prine, and had a bunch of successful songs on his first album, which came out before Prine started.

John was postman turned songwriter from Illinois. Townes is very much in that Texas singer songwriting gang of that era. No doubt they listened to Mississippi John Hurt Rev Gary Davis and other finger picking greats. That style proceeds both of them
