@Alan Pasnyk - a solid theory...I have two of my old keyboards lying around, but the thing I am best at detecting is old Rhodes electric pianos. I love their sound so much, but they're heavy and temperamental beasts. Too expensive to repair

Also JAMS and Culturcide pretty well destroyed some popular hits.

@Number 6 - Ah! I'm glad that when my kid was a toddler, Biz Markie had a segment on one of her favorite little kid shows, Yo Gabba Gabba called Biz's Beat of the Day where he just beatboxed and that's it!

@Alan Pasnyk - The oldest keyboard I own is a Casio from the late 80s that was a very big deal to me when I was 10. I still like to hit that demo setting!

@ Lizbot: You mean the small one...?? I think I also have that same model as you do, it's programmable and has a built in calculator...

@Jason Ferraro - I follow Stuart Moxham online for his excellent dog photos and old post-punk flyers he's always posting

I've got a Casio CZ 1000 that I haven't pulled out of the closet for several years. Last time I checked, they were selling on the used market for more than I paid for it 30-something years ago!

@Alan Pasnyk - Mine is kinda large and doesn't have a calculator. If I had a moment to run into the other room, Id check which model!

@Lee Chandler - I can think of a few composers who used math nerdiness to compose! Milton Babbit for one, with his 12-tone array

@ Lee: It has "ADSR" settings, so put in an eight digit number and it gives a certain sound..

@liz that’s like 2-1/2 Simon machines, I think. Everything used D-batteries back then, not realizing that Phillies fans would be using them so much.

@Dennisons - Tell Mary I saw the Cameron Crowe musical of Almost Famous in November. It was worthwhile but flawed as a musical. It's his first musical. I wonder if he will attempt to adapt Say Anything and I'm NOT sure how I feel about that!

@Lee Chandler - Yeah, I stopped keeping any instruments or electronic gear (other than my husband's old drum kit) in the basement ever since the main sewer line in my previous house burst and destroyed everything down there! Yay for 100 year-old Philly pipes!

@Dennisons - oooh, I have a soft spot for Simons too! I still have my original Simon from my childhood PLUS a Super Simon I got on Ebay 20 years ago!

Hi Carlos Ramone! Nice! The Aquabats get endless credit for creating that show! WAY better than 99% of TV for kids that age! I love how many great guest bands come on that show and the soundtracks compilations of the YGG are actually pretty good, esp the catchy AF song about brushing one's teeth!

@Dennisons - I think about Simons probably more than is healthy. They look like those old tinted circular Christmas tree lamps you put at the base of the tree that rotate with a wheel of colors...there NEEDS to be a shorter name for those!

@Lee Chandler - yeah...I'm in NW Philly now, and I don't get much basement moisture, thankfully! The WORST was when I lived in South Philly near the Italian Market - All the basements on my block got so much water with even a moderate rain!

@Number 6 - Calculators themselves are these antiquated collectibles at this point! My 8th grader doesn't even have one!

The older parts of Philly have combined sewers where both rainwater and everything else goes together.

The outlying areas have newer pipes. Mine was built in the early 60s.

Hi Francis! I picked it when I was in my early 20s and it started as a nickname amongst friends. My friend had made me a shirt with a robot version of myself silk-screened on it. It had at least something to do with the fact that I collected old 70s and 80s TOMY toy robots back then. I still have the collection, but haven't added to it in at least a dozen years!

Hi Laura Loewen! Back when all the WPRB DJs broadcast from our studio in Princeton, mostly CDs & vinyl. We have a large music library there, plus we bring in our own records too. Since the pandemic and home-studios, however, less vinyl cuz it's trickier to do in the home set-up

@Dennisons - Tell Mary "thanks!" and tell her I loved her enthusiasm for Say Anything last week! I had a similar "Why didn't I get into this sooner?" experience with that movie. I did see it back in the late 80s but in weird circumstances and wasn't in the right headspace. Rewatching it years later I was like "Holy crap, this is great!" It was really fun watching Hattie watch it for the first time last summer. She rewatched it 2 more times in a month!

@Alan Pasnyk - Hejira is such a gorgeous album, and I love the themes of wandering on the open road (or in Amelia's case, the open sky) on it

@Liz same for me, I avoided that movie because I thought it would be another John Hughes dated movie of high schoolers acting like jerks, but it’s was way better than we expected! Not sure about a stage version, though.

@ Liz..rumor has it that Jackie K was the first to say “ Dallas sucks” not sure if it is true or not

Ha! I have a few fav movies I’ve tried to get my husband to like because every time he’s tried to watch them, I’m convinced he hasn’t been in the right headspace.

@Dennisons - I don't want a stage version to exist...or DO I...? Nah. I am curious, but I really don't think it would be a good thing. Almost Famous lends itself better to a musical format because of all the Stillwater songs and other 70s rock they can throw in there...which, BTW, they did and somehow got the rights to Led Zeppelin songs, which really surprised me! Maybe Page and Plant cut Crowe a friendly deal, if they even own the rights to their own songs at this point

@Lee Chandler - yeah, that has happened to me with my husband. I showed him Moonstruck all excitedly because I love that movie but then realize I was the one not in the mood for it that night! There are other movies I showed him once and he didn't like or was neutral on and then watched years later and liked

I love all WPRB DJs (after listening to the radio in St Louis I appreciate them even more) but Lizbot is the best at this kind of keyboardy stuff.

@Dennisons - haha, thanks! Yeah, I cannot overstate how much keyboards influenced my brain in my youth and continue to to this day. Was a piano lessons kid who loved playing keyboards and always responded to keyboard music. Thankfully there was a lot of it in the 80s and a lot was odd!

@ Lizbot: Yeah, I remember hearing something about her being in this area.....Love her voice and the mood of her songs...

@Dennisons - Also, synths and seeing Suzanne Ciani playing a Don Buchla synth on 3-2-1 Contact on PBS before we had cable kinda blew my mind cuz she wasn't a young dude with shades on in a new wave band! (thought I liked plenty of those too!) I watched a LOT of PBS back then before my brother & I finally worse my parents down and they got cable

@Dennisons - I am really glad I just had PBS to keep me company after school for a large portion of my childhood because I saw so much great stuff on old PBS (RIP...it's so different now, post-G W Bush defunding it so drastically) And I was so jealous of friends who could watch Fraggle Rock on their Spectrum cable, but PBS was better! Remember Simon In the Land of Chalk Drawings and Pinwheel??!

@Lee Chandler - Oooh, nice! I want to check out the zine library! There's a great one in at the Pittsburgh public main Carnegie branch and my friend, who has made a zine called High On Burning Photographs since the 90s, found not only a bunch of copies of her own zine, but ALSO was unexpectedly reacquainted with a huge chunk of her zine collection of other ppl's zines she left with a friend some time in the 2000s!

@Dennisons - British, originally on the BBC, black and white animated show similar to the Harold & The Purple Crayon - kid draws what's in his imagination and it comes to life. very simple line drawings. Mike Myers actually parodied its theme song on SNL in the early 90s - little boy in tub who sings "I like to do "drawrings." I guess he saw a lot of BBC growing up in Canada

@Lee Chandler - The last (and only) time I was on Stockton's campus was when I went with my mom to drop my older brother off at the Governor's School for the environment there in 1992! He actually MET HIS WIFE at that program!

Yeah, spent a lot of time there on their station - WLFR early thru late 90’s.

@Number 6 - I'm always talking with my husband about maybe driving down the shore for a day in winter. I used to do that with my impulsive friend Mary before she moved to Wisconsin. If I actually do it this winter, Ill have to make a stop at Stockton for that show on the way!

@Lee Chandler - Oh wow, I'd say my brother might've heard you on air back then, but I doubt it cuz he barely ever listened to college radio. It's funny- the way I found out he got a girlfriend while there was that he came home from those couple of weeks with a tape mix of Deee-Lite and 10,000 Maniacs, neither of which were his taste (which was largely Rush and AC/DC at the time). My theory was confirmed when I intercepted a postcard from his camp girlfriend, my now sister-in-law

@Dennisons - I watched Reading Rainbow on PBS for that perfect intro song more than anything else. I aspired to be one of the kids who talks about their favorite picturebook on that show, but alas. Years later I met a friend who was on Reading Rainbow as a kid. His parents apparently worked in television. Nepo-baby!
