My friend Ian informed me that there is a photo from De La Soul’s 1991 Dillon Gym show on their Wikipedia page. In other news, I apparently wore a t-shirt of an AmRep band to see De La Soul at Dillon Gym in 1991. In hour two of tonight's show we'll pay tribute to David “Trugoy The Dove” Jolicoeur. What a loss.

Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, ‘How High’s The Water Mama’ tells the story of one of hip hop’s most influential albums." - United States of Audio

Jon Solomon (host) 5:03:16 PM
We're off the to the radio races (or something like that).
Brian D 5:08:43 PM
stereo 103.3
Jon Solomon (host) 5:08:45 PM
The Sweep The Leg Johnny live video I shared in the playlist is a must-watch later. To say more would ruin several surprises.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:08:50 PM
Heya Brian.
Brian D 5:10:03 PM
Hello hello. This is wild!
Jon Solomon (host) 5:10:41 PM
In the late 1990s / early 2000s it felt pretty rare to have a band like this with a sax-blurting front man.
Dan Ruccia 5:10:59 PM
Such a great band
Dan Ruccia 5:11:08 PM
I think I saw them play in Princeton in like 2002?
Jon Solomon (host) 5:11:16 PM
With The Dismemberment Plan?
Jon Solomon (host) 5:11:40 PM
I was not there but I know I showed up after a Sweep / Ted Leo / Screaming Females show in Princeton in say 2007.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:12:27 PM
I listened to this record in full yesterday and it holds up much better than a lot of their contemporaries. I feel similarly about the June of 44 I have enjoyed recently. Aged nicely.
Dan Ruccia 5:12:29 PM
I think that's right?
Dan Ruccia 5:13:04 PM
Another Southern Records record that seems lost to the sands of digital time... I expect Numero to do a reissue any day now?
Jon Solomon (host) 5:14:03 PM
I am not 100% sure if that's on their docket. Similarly, Dianogah (who did get their masters back).
Dan Ruccia 5:15:10 PM
I found this on Bandcamp. No idea if it's legit or not... https://dupagecountyhardcore.bandcamp.com/album/sto-cazzo
Brian D 5:16:15 PM
That STLH lp title is the actual phrase where the "stugots" corrupted curse comes from
Jon Solomon (host) 5:16:26 PM
That is where I pulled it from and I think it is at least quasi-legit. Dude who runs that page is an archivist of that era but I don't know if he got 100% of the bands to agree to be a part.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:16:42 PM
They have a ton of midwestern demo tapes posted.

Jon Solomon (host) 5:22:41 PM
The CD I have of Hot Buttered Soul is so old it is one of those discs with a "how do you like your compact disc experience?" card as part of the packaging.
Brian D 5:23:29 PM
Long box cardboard
Brian D 5:23:58 PM
I thought at the time yeah I'll save these long boxes and maybe hang them up on the wall
Jon Solomon (host) 5:24:11 PM
Long box for life!
Brian D 5:24:29 PM
Resisted and got in the game kind of late for CDs though
Brian D 5:25:44 PM
I think about 1992 or 93 i finally bought a cd
Chris Daltry 5:27:20 PM
hello Jon Solomon!
Jon Solomon (host) 5:27:21 PM
The first CD I purchased was Yo! Bum Rush The Show at the compact disc shop on the second floor at Princeton Forrestal Village. All of this is exceptionally on-brand.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:27:25 PM
Hey, Chris!
Brian D 5:27:29 PM
Doz or so of my firsts were free cds from Maxell blank tapes bonus promo points stickers. Some were long boxers
Shut Up Wesley 5:27:37 PM
Now you ain’t crazy, I know you ain’t crazy.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:27:42 PM
Wesley!
Jon Solomon (host) 5:28:02 PM
Chris, I suspect you will enjoy the next song. Just a theory.
Chris Daltry 5:31:51 PM
wow, yes Jon!
Jon Solomon (host) 5:40:29 PM
Apparently Ducks Ltd. did a whole Feelies cover band thing for Halloween. I'm curious to hear more!
Jon Solomon (host) 5:41:17 PM
I don't know if any of you got the WPRB newsletter about it, but as has been mentioned in past shows we're in the middle of building a second studio space.
Jon Solomon (host) 5:41:43 PM

Dan Ruccia 5:49:24 PM
(Just a reminder to myself to download that Metalzone record for inclusion in a future turkey-themed show)
Dan Ruccia 5:54:43 PM
A band with all the former Fall members would be the Poly-Fallic Spree
Jeff Jotz 5:57:31 PM
Nice Star Wars quote Jon.
Jeff Jotz 5:57:55 PM
RIP Steve S. Former college pal of mine.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:00:32 PM
Steve was an enthusiastic force of nature. Enjoyed his company a bunch. So awful.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:00:42 PM
Jeff, I am glad you caught the 94.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:00:59 PM
When my kid got a 94 on her math test I did the same thing.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:01:23 PM
Dan, I wonder what the highest # of former Fall members that have ever been in the same room at the same time. More than 20?
Jeff Jotz 6:03:34 PM
I was thinking of the 90s punk band "All" when I heard the name "House of All"
Jon Solomon (host) 6:06:28 PM
https://www.nme.com/news/music/mark-e-smiths-family-reject-new-project-created-by-former-members-of-the-fall-this-is-extremely-offensive-3391048
Jon Solomon (host) 6:06:42 PM
Mark E Smith's family called the band "extremely offensive."
Dan Ruccia 6:07:08 PM
I'm imagining that scene from whatever movie where all the gangsters former associates come to his funeral to make sure he's actually dead, except with former members of the Fall
Jon Solomon (host) 6:07:44 PM
Each former member brings a safety pin up to the casket?
Brian D 6:11:14 PM
CYMANDE SAMPLE!
Ossy 6:11:44 PM
Hello Jon
Jon Solomon (host) 6:12:01 PM
The same series did mixes for Paul Boutique (which I think I played when MCA died) and maybe Nation of Millions? I know I have a third one.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:12:06 PM
Ossy, you're just in time.
Ossy 6:15:04 PM
Butter classic hits as Patty Jackson and Readie Righteous plays!
Rofflestomp 6:15:41 PM
Metalzone to Funky Town with all the lights in the cockpit flashing like disco lights.
Rofflestomp 6:16:13 PM
Happy Wednesday!
Jon Solomon (host) 6:19:26 PM
Tonight's dinner: an assortment of leftover tortilla chips from the Super Bowl (argh) with both veggie chili and mac + cheese added before going into the oven. Topped again with two kinds of salsa and cherry peppers after. I'm quite full.
Jeff Jotz 6:19:44 PM
one of my greatest regrets is misplacing a cassette tape I recorded of WBLS sometime in the mid-80s where DJ Red Alert was mixing "Trans Europe Express" with Run DMC's "You're Blind"
Jon Solomon (host) 6:20:29 PM
Wow. A lot of cassettes of WPRB hip hop shows have turned up online. Found a few freestyles that way I remembered vividly.
Chris Daltry 6:21:33 PM
that's why college radio rules, Jon!
Ossy 6:21:53 PM
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jeff Jotz 6:22:47 PM
I'm generally on Albini's side when it comes to Steely Dan but De La made them palatable to me
Jon Solomon (host) 6:23:00 PM
Jeff, I have a couple "white whales" like that. One is a Swatch commercial with The Fat Boys that only aired once!
richard lyons :) 6:23:10 PM
This is amazing! Found it on Soundcloud!
Richard from Rocky Hill 6:23:27 PM
All that talent and innovation plus a major Steely Dan sample, what's not to like?
Jon Solomon (host) 6:23:49 PM
Steve puts all sorts of opinions out there on his Twitter and it is amazing what music sites re-post for clicks.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:24:08 PM
I have no dog in the Dan fight but a few of the things he wrote were hilarious.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:24:46 PM
One of my favorite writers, even when I haven't agreed with him (esp. in his weird refusal to give any hip hop the time of day).
Jon Solomon (host) 6:25:29 PM
Richard, I'm sorry this is why I had to re-air it but I am glad to be able to share it again.
Rofflestomp 6:28:25 PM
Front porch Hip Hop, or actually "rap" was an amazing boom box phenomena in the NYC upper west side. It's all so crossover now.
Richard from Rocky Hill 6:28:35 PM
@ Jon Solomon (host) It works for me ... like a little bit of soap ... ;-))
Brian D 6:28:44 PM
Great set here
DJPUP 6:29:08 PM
Enjoying the show tonight! Greetings folks :)
Jon Solomon (host) 6:29:13 PM
Roffle, I recommend the "Fight The Power" doc series on PBS / Prime. Finished the first episode last night.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:29:54 PM
Second episode just came out. They spend most of part one discussing the socioeconomic conditions of New York in the mid 1970s. The Message doesn't drop until the very end of the ep.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:30:00 PM
PUP!
Mary Jones 6:30:03 PM
Hello! I came in on the sample of “a little bit of soap” and was very very confused! As I am testing out using TuneIn on our Roku.
Rofflestomp 6:30:22 PM
Thanks, I'll check it out. Your Andor recomandation was spot on after all. :)
Jon Solomon (host) 6:30:29 PM
Mary! When I was visiting maura.com, I was pretty into how well her TV TuneIn situation worked.
Mary Jones 6:31:07 PM
Oh, nice—yeah, this is the first time I’m trying it on here. I like it!
Mary Jones 6:31:42 PM
Also, Dennis fixed our sound bar, so now the bass doesn’t cut out anymore.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:31:54 PM
Sweet.
Mary Jones 6:32:01 PM
I hope Maura is well!
Jon Solomon (host) 6:33:20 PM
Oh, this was last year. But, I'll be back up to see her at month's end!
Rofflestomp 6:34:03 PM
Liberace? Hehehe
Jon Solomon (host) 6:34:04 PM
We mostly sat around listening to WPRB via TuneIn while eating delivery tacos and doing face masks. I hope to do the same at month's end.
Brian D 6:34:40 PM
The Get Down series for a scripted (actors, comic hero parallels etc) telling of the turntable 70s origins was a fun ride too
Jon Solomon (host) 6:35:21 PM
My friend [redacted] worked on The Get Down and he HAS SOME STORIES.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:35:40 PM
It is a minor miracle the show got finished and there's a reason many scenes in part two were animated...
Brian D 6:35:46 PM
Duane Allman did session gtr on that Hey Jude but not sure if that snippet was him
Brian D 6:37:33 PM
GIMME THE MERMAID! (maybe he's right...) This set so so fits with DJ #6 show today on lawsuits/ samples etc material
Patrick C 6:37:38 PM
Greetings and salutations from the west coast!
Jon Solomon (host) 6:37:49 PM
Get on in here, Patrick!
Patrick C 6:38:38 PM
Thanks! Long time listener, second time chatter.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:38:54 PM
Welcome back.
Patrick C 6:39:10 PM
So many ball caps in that picture.
Mary Jones 6:39:40 PM
The important thing, Patrick, is that you’re listening to New Jersey’s only radio station.
Brian D 6:39:54 PM
Speaking of past wprb audio found online, I saw recently that DJ Marc Coleman shows from late 90s were up on archive dot org
Rofflestomp 6:40:04 PM
@Brian D, yeah #6's show was a strange sample fest. But fascinating nonetheless.
Brian D 6:40:08 PM
Dance mix extended sets
Brian D 6:40:30 PM
He had Friday nights locked down for a while there
Jon Solomon (host) 6:40:41 PM
There's a whole site with his tapes, Raw Deal, Vibes & Vapors, etc...
Rofflestomp 6:41:36 PM
Hello person from 3 hours in the future Patrick C, I mean past lol.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:42:15 PM
Check out https://normalbias.org, Brian.
Brian D 6:42:50 PM
I was in heaven w #6 playing both the Animaniacs / Pinky &the Brain reenactment of Orson Welles advertisement read fails (a wprb fave station id) AND AND a half hour of Joe Frank episode When I'm Calling You.... bliss
Patrick C 6:43:00 PM
In the past,I have been accused of living in the past.
Jeff Jotz 6:44:22 PM
Jon, I posted some pre-streaming WFMU and WBGO radio shows on YouTube. I think I have a WRSU recording from the early 90s somewhere I gotta digitize. No WPRB, sadly.
Brian D 6:44:32 PM
Thanks for reminding me Jon! I believe my rabbit holes pointed me towards his normal bias site and now I'll go back!
Jon Solomon (host) 6:44:39 PM
I have a basement of tapes to digitize...someday.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:45:20 PM
I did not record my show regularly as a kid but I know I have at least one of my first WPRB programs. Can see the blue / silver tape label in my mind...
Ossy 6:46:38 PM
Philly classic Friday night sounds!
Brian D 6:47:15 PM
Big ol fridge raid of Mediterranean spread : chicken, Brussels, asparagus, spinach, tzatziki, Greek tomato feta dip sauce, thick pita n others.... full full full
Jon Solomon (host) 6:47:51 PM
Good work, Brian.
Rofflestomp 6:48:02 PM
Takes years to fill a good hard drive up with compression and no time at all for tape. :)
Brian D 6:48:45 PM
Ya real leftovers triumph tonight
Jon Solomon (host) 6:49:42 PM
I had to take a 36 hour break from nachos / mac + cheese / Super Bowl food (including some very good babaganoj) because I was dyin'.
Rofflestomp 6:50:03 PM
Egg drop soup and some bread. I have no big plans at all.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:50:23 PM
Was all set to make plain pasta tonight and then my wife went wild with the leftovers and what, I'm supposed to say no?
Mary Jones 6:51:41 PM
How do you define “plain pasta”?
Rofflestomp 6:52:23 PM
Yea, does that count with butter?
Jon Solomon (host) 6:52:43 PM
Great question. Last night I had some linguini with nothing on it for dinner. No oil, no butter. No spices. I needed a break!
Jon Solomon (host) 6:53:06 PM
There was Unexpected Good Pizza in my office for lunch yesterday and that was enough.
Rofflestomp 6:55:17 PM
My Chinese girlfriend loves just porridge, and she would appreciate you pasta approach..
Brian D 6:56:13 PM
Our friends' SB party had stacks and stacks of some fine pizzas. Half cooked special order. Put in oven to heat up and finish. Good call. Sausage, jalapeno with honey is a fave. And another friend/guest there brought white bean, kale, chorizo, salt pork stew that was a golden beige velvet delight. Then I was ready for a nice light lunch & dinner Monday haha
Jon Solomon (host) 6:57:35 PM
When I went to see Ui the Sunday before last at that mysterious compound in Hunterdon County, there were like 15-20 pizzas there and almost all were untouched. Did I already mention this? Shockingly good. No idea where hailed from.
Brian D 6:58:58 PM
Friend that hosts/hosted big ol yearly parties and sometimes mini concerts would call the local pizza joint and order 10 pies at a time to be specifically delivered every hour for the duration. Maybe 5-6 hours or so. Kept them fresh and hot. Good call.
Jon Solomon (host) 6:59:30 PM
That's genius.
Brian D 7:00:02 PM
Top notch hour set there
Jon Solomon (host) 7:00:19 PM
I did some less than stellar dancing throughout.

Dave Hartley is now in The War on Drugs, I believe.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:13:12 PM
This song always felt like it should be a huge hit to me.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:21:11 PM
Steaz. So much Steaz.
Mary Jones 7:21:42 PM
Jon, 2007 shouldn’t be a long time ago, but you sound so young here.
Captain Ahab 7:21:51 PM
lol you used to speak so much faster!
Jeff Jotz 7:23:37 PM
Chat feature is often wonky so Vicky wants me to tell you that she is in love with this acoustic set.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:24:33 PM
Cap, Nicole just said the same thing. This was not sped up but...
Jon Solomon (host) 7:25:10 PM
Steaz messed me up. It was a tea / energy drink that WPRB received a pallet of.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:25:24 PM
Hey, Vicky (by proxy).
Ambrose Hughes 7:25:53 PM
Hi Jon! Helluva set this, nice voice.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:26:18 PM
I was likely super fired-up for the Membership Drive. But it is kind of weird how fast I talked then. Expect if I was in a studio with other DJs I'd be more energized. Home is rather relaxing!
Jeff Jotz 7:26:22 PM
Vicky see this sounds like a less-depressing Jason Molina
Jon Solomon (host) 7:27:09 PM
I can hear that.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:27:20 PM
One of his songs sounds a lot like Belle and / or Sebastian to me.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:28:15 PM
2007 was, by my math, roughly 1/3 of my life ago. Dios mio.
Mary Jones 7:31:05 PM
37% of my life ago! Oh no!
Mary Jones 7:31:55 PM
I take it back, 2007 is a million years ago.
Captain Ahab 7:32:15 PM
I could use a Steaz right now
Captain Ahab 7:33:07 PM
lol product placement!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:33:36 PM
I think Steaz was like Sparks but no alcohol. Same era, same size can, provided by the same DJ / man about town?
Jon Solomon (host) 7:34:10 PM
Sparks was alcoholic and caffeinated.
Jeff Jotz 7:34:19 PM
2007 was what? Like 5 years ago. Right????
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 7:35:36 PM
BAM
Jon Solomon (host) 7:35:40 PM
2007 is a pre-Maggie economy. That weird "married but no kid yet living in the house I'm DJ-ing from presently" span.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:35:44 PM
Chef!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:36:21 PM
Captain Ahab 7:36:47 PM
In 4 years I will be the age you were in this recordig
Vicky Wheeler 7:37:11 PM
OMG I think I'm in! Why do I have to log in 8x before I get in. wprb velvet ropes are harsh!!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:38:08 PM
Cap, that's just rubbing it in. We're peers! Peers I say!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:38:17 PM
Vicky, way to get past the doorman without paying.
Captain Ahab 7:40:24 PM
Sorry Jon didn't mean it in that sense! Lots to look forward to
Vicky Wheeler 7:40:58 PM
Anyway i just want to say this is beautiful and exactly what I need, been a hard week 💙
Jon Solomon (host) 7:41:13 PM
Cap, it is totally OK and I love ya. Do not worry.
Jeff Jotz 7:41:19 PM
My TCM film is on pause until tonight's excellent show ends
Captain Ahab 7:41:31 PM
4-7am?!!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:41:33 PM
Vicky, I'm sorry to hear that but I am glad the music could be here for you tonight.
Mary Jones 7:42:06 PM
Ahahaha, a 7 Mary 3 diss.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:42:17 PM
Cap, first time slots for DJs used to be MUCH LATER THAN THEY ARE NOW and as the lone (well perhaps one of two) non-student DJ I got the last time slot available.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:42:40 PM
2-5 am, 3-6 am, 4-7 am, I did them all.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:43:07 PM
Had a loyal crew of very drunk high school students from Hightstown who would listen weekly. They even came to a JV basketball game of mine at their school! Which is amazing.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:43:23 PM
On several fronts. I sort of hope one of them will look me up one day.
Captain Ahab 7:43:33 PM
I'm not surprised, I get the sense that's the norm at lots of student/college stations
Jon Solomon (host) 7:44:01 PM
The only other non-student DJ who got on the air around then was Wilbo. Wonder whatever happened to him.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:44:22 PM
Save for summer when community members would add to the airwaves.
Ossy 7:44:22 PM
Wow
Jeff Jotz 7:45:03 PM
I used to fill in on weekend mornings in the summer on WRSU when the students were out of school.
Captain Ahab 7:45:05 PM
I think that's why I got lucky, I started on the summer slot so got a regular afternoon slot
Vicky Wheeler 7:45:05 PM
Haha Jon I took pride in doing the overnights ak the school breaks at KRUI Iowa city
Captain Ahab 7:45:37 PM
Didn't have to prove myself with a graveyard shift!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:45:55 PM
In my opinion the best stations are the one with the perfect balance of young people enthusiastic about music and comparatively older individuals who are interested in adding to that conversation instead of just resting on their laurels. WPRB's got that now and we're all working towards the same goal.
Vicky Wheeler 7:46:08 PM
Oops all the overnights all the school breaks. As MD, I felt it was my duty
Ossy 7:46:21 PM
Nice
Jon Solomon (host) 7:46:37 PM
Vicky, the students who had to man the ship in 1988 were so happy someone volunteered to be on for Christmas Eve so they didn't have to. Little did we all know...
Captain Ahab 7:46:50 PM
LOL
Jon Solomon (host) 7:48:23 PM
Got a text from my mom that reads "your parents were insane."

I did some 2-6 am shows on WFMU in the 90s after Upsala College went bankrupt and the campus was abandoned. I would park in a lot lined with razor wire and when I rang the bell and waited for the DJ to buzz me in, to the building it felt like HOURS AND HOURS.

That's amazing Jeff and not dissimilar from some Radio Anxiety Dreams I've had.

No... I loved overnights. The best listeners. Bc they HAVE to listen. They are working 3rd shift, insomniacs, truck drivers... they need you!
Mary Jones 7:50:21 PM
I was sad that West Chester U didn’t allow overnights—I would’ve snatched that up in a heartbeat.

There's a former DJ / architecture student who I got to know b/c she was always working on her grad school work overnights with WPRB as her soundtrack.

Radio is the best! You're not too bad yourself!
Chris Mohr 7:51:14 PM
Late to the show but can personally affirm what Jon said about the DJs in 1988!
Chris Mohr 7:52:07 PM
Sorry to miss House of All. Thanks for playing that, Jon!
Jon Solomon (host) 7:52:11 PM
Ha! Hey, Chris. You missed House of...yep.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:52:30 PM
I like that song, do think a better band name would serve them well.

WSND FM was classical music all day until 12-2 am when they had a token freeform show for us students. I often stayed on air until 3 or 4 am because I had lots of records to play. We had callers who were listening on the south side of Chicago 100 miles to the west. Radio signals traveled far, far away in the Midwest.
Vicky Wheeler 7:52:37 PM
Haha yeah I once was gifted a Toyota Tercel from an overnight listener on WFMU no kidding
Chris Mohr 7:52:54 PM
I read the playlists and hear the show in my mind. 🙂

College radios are indeed life of the campus party, fun experiences
Jon Solomon (host) 7:53:10 PM
WNUR had a dedicated listener who gave one of my housemates a used car. Who knew that was a thing!
Jeff Jotz 7:54:43 PM
Oh man Jeff Lynne cover...wow!
Ossy 7:54:49 PM
I hear of some campus station named Z88.9, that used to be active

Vicky, I suspect his CDs are quite inexpensive in 2023. If you can't find I can rip for ya. He's terrific.
Jon Solomon (host) 7:58:17 PM
Gang, this was a ton of fun. Always great to know you're out there. I just found out my birthday (not until April) is on a Wednesday night and that got me unexpectedly excited.
Brian D 7:58:17 PM

Jim O'Rourke did a whole record of BB covers in addition to the one on Eureka. News to me as of 2/13/23.
