Good morning jimboo
PADMA GANESH 9:38:49 AM
Many delightful ragas are weaved into the Ragamalika composition being sung by Bombay Sisters right now
Sangeet Team (host) 9:43:11 AM
Ramaprasad will be announcing which ragas were sung after the piece is over.
PADMA GANESH 9:45:40 AM
There is another popular Ragamalika “Bhavayami” composed by Swati Tirunaal. That is THE magnum opus IMHO :-)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:48:02 AM
Ah yes, Bhavayami Ragaburamam. I have a rendition of that sung by MS Subbulakshmi
Rofflestomp 9:55:00 AM
The way this hits the ear and how sync it is with the bowing is mind boggling.
PADMA GANESH 9:55:07 AM
@Dave, classic recording of M. S
Sangeet Team (host) 9:56:27 AM
@ Rofflestomp, this is a skill that reflects a lifetime of dedication and practice. And of course natural talent.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:57:14 AM
@Padma, I can probably air that recording next time I host Sangeet in March.
Rofflestomp 10:03:53 AM
Definitely amazing. I have seen recitals in Paul Hall that were far less remarkable for sure.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:04:33 AM
Of course the Bombay Sisters are top level artists.
PADMA GANESH 10:05:19 AM
@Dave thanks I look forward to hearing Bhavayami in March.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:07:41 AM
Only if Rungun and Jayashri promise not to broadcast it first 😉
PADMA GANESH 10:08:21 AM
@Dave all the hosts can broadcast it :-)). Then we listeners can hear it again and again :-))
Sangeet Team (host) 10:09:43 AM
True. But we do try not to repeat musical selections, as good as they are
Rofflestomp 10:15:57 AM
@PADMA GANESH, catching the things most wonderful and putting them to note is the biggest challenge of listening to WPRB, lol. No song rotation exists here other than there is no regular rotation per say whatsoever. Quite lovely really.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:16:46 AM
That's what keeps me listening for sure.
PADMA GANESH 10:17:42 AM
Serendipity?
Rofflestomp 10:17:46 AM
👍
PADMA GANESH 10:33:00 AM
Tani Avartanam, the percussion solo for South Indian Classical (Carnatic) Music is played with great sophistication. As good as if not better than Buddy Rich or a Beethoven symphony timpani.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:34:21 AM
True. I don't think I have heard any percussion as complex as Carnatic rhythms.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:36:24 AM
But the drawback is this: now that I have become habituated with Indian rhythms, simple pop music beats annoy me with their simplicity.
Rofflestomp 10:59:19 AM
The poly semitones and rhythms are really crazy and tough for western ears. But, I could never go back to listening to AM after discovering FM when I was a kid, so that makes sense.
Rofflestomp 11:58:26 AM
Thanks Sangeet Team folks. Outside the box is rather refreshing sometimes indeed.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:58:56 AM
I dwell perpetually outside that box
Rofflestomp 11:59:30 AM
Oh yes!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:59:30 AM
Thanks for listening this morning, everyone, and joining the chat. Have a good day.
