Superchunk, prerelease Everything Hurts. Single. McCaughan told Stereogum about the 7 inch: Perhaps because they are more traditionally “Superchunk”-sounding than the rest of the LP (“Everything Hurts” could be from Come Pick Me Up, and “Making a Break” has What a Time to Be Alive energy)? Who knows! So here are these misfits from the Wild Loneliness sessions, recorded at home in Chapel Hill and mixed by Wally Gagel in LA.

"Long Black Veil" is a 1959 country ballad, written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. It is told from the point of view of a man falsely accused of murder and executed. He refuses to provide an alibi, since on the night of the murder he was having an extramarital affair with his best friend's wife, and would rather die and take their secret to his grave than admit the truth. The chorus describes the woman's mourning visits to his gravesite, wearing a long black veil and enduring a wailing wind.

Durham, North Carolina singer, guitarist, and folksong interpreter Jake Xerxes Fussell (yes, that’s his real middle name, after Georgia potter D.X. Gordy) has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs, a practice which he approaches with a refreshingly unfussy lack of nostalgia and preciousness.

From the Library of Congress: Two years after the success of his first set of Old American Songs, Copland arranged a second set of American folk tunes for voice and piano. As he had done with the American debut of the first set of songs, Copland once again accompanied baritone William Warfield in the premiere performance of the sequel set on 24 July 1953. Copland later transcribed both sets of Old American Songs for performance by vocal soloist and orchestra, which were later arranged for chorus and piano and chorus and orchestra by Irving Fine and many others.

I saw the Raincoats’ long-anticipated return to America on Tuesday, April 5, 1994 (at Maxwell’s with Maxwell’s co-owner Steve Shelley drumming). That was followed by a weekend New York show, Intended to precede a UK tour with Nirvana.

For the past hour or so I've been having an internal battle over what to do when I leave work today - physical record store shopping, or organize my neglected collection spread out to every room + basement of house. Please vote.
