Hi Stephen, I like today's show a lot. I know you will enjoy it!
Mike Tropiano 12:02:57 PM
Wasn't that riff used somewhere in a theme for a TV or radio show?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:03 PM
RS, we're gonna do just that
Stephen Higgins 12:03:05 PM
I'm sure I will...I always do!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:47 PM
Hi Mike. Good to see it is in the back of your mind. But it is from a Traffic album
gboss 12:04:23 PM
Happy Friday, Jerry and everyone!

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:09:36 PM

Christine 𓅓 12:09:53 PM
It's a song by the Police.

Could have influenced the performer/writer of the song I played. I'll check it out
Christine 𓅓 12:10:50 PM
That riff is so reminiscent of part of its melody.
Mike Tropiano 12:15:14 PM
Jerry, it's probably Traffic that's piquing my subconscious, and Traffic that was used as a theme.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:16:11 PM
I'm sure I'm not the first one to use it that way!
Rob F 12:16:12 PM
This is a great track!

Stephen Higgins 12:26:23 PM
This Sun Ra piece is awesome!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:27:53 PM
This new album is outrageously good. I think best Post-Ra album yet. The song (a different version) originally appeared on my favorite Ra album My Brother the Wind Vol II

Brian, this guy has been around since the very early 70s. Now like so many jazz musicians, he is on his own label and promoting himself.
Patrick Blanco 1:05:41 PM
Looking forward to the third hour tribute to Beck.I am sure you will play Loser and much of the Odelay album

Yes, Christine, you can tell Patrick is 80
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:13:58 PM

Patrick Blanco 1:25:32 PM
The Evening Bulletin often referred to me as the Florence Foster Jenkins of comedy
Mike Constantine 1:27:21 PM
They're dying to see you
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:14 PM
Hey Mike! You can't get there from here.
Mike Constantine 1:28:51 PM
Ha!....Hi Jerry
Russell Woessner 1:29:08 PM
The Ars Nova website says that only 10 tickets remain for the Marshall Allen concert.
Patrick Blanco 1:31:08 PM
My bookings stopped because of wide spread fan violence.People were pushing and shoving to leave early
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:31:11 PM
Mike, I just heard from another listener who said that his starting point was with Blow By Blow also. I find that interesting, it's an age thing I guess
Lance Gardner 1:31:53 PM
Hi Grandpa G Squared. Stopped in to say great music as always.
Christine 𓅓 1:32:08 PM
Patrick, you're a hoot 🦉
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:32:36 PM
Thanks, Lance! Did you see your star suncatcher on the Facebook page?
Mike Constantine 1:32:45 PM
I was starting to get into Fusion around 72 73 but Blow by Blow really pulled me in
Lance Gardner 1:33:22 PM
Yes! Thanks. Do you have it yet?
Lance Gardner 1:33:47 PM
Cacti?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:33:47 PM
Lance, I love that name and may start using it.
Lance Gardner 1:34:20 PM
Ha ha cool
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:34:47 PM
Yeah, cacti. A big hit with alot of people who mentioned it
Lance Gardner 1:36:49 PM
Very nice Thanks again. Looking forward to Jeff Beck tribute. He never stopped expanding his craft......
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:37:20 PM
Absolutely, Lance, never stayed still for a moment.
Brian D 1:37:52 PM
This one wow. Great brew of sounds
Lance Gardner 1:37:58 PM
Later. Grandpa G from NJ.
Rob F 1:38:31 PM
Yes, very interesting sounds
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:47:05 PM
Thanks, Rob F
Rob F 1:49:16 PM
0:07 The New Groove: The Blue Note Remix Project is quite interesting
Brian D 1:49:43 PM
Blow by Blow was the one that did it for me. Then Wired. Did not know about them until the mid 80s. Knew he was a Yardbird of course but did not learn the exact era and songs he played on until years later. Then that made a lot of sense knowing his sense of sound and "flavor" he put in to that band.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:51:15 PM
Thanks, Rob F, I don' t have that and should track it down
Mike Constantine 1:51:22 PM
Had Blow by Blow and Wired on 8 track....wore them out
Brian D 1:51:44 PM
Cool short lived era is when Beck and Page had the twin lead guitar thing going on in three Yardbirds. Shame it was not documented more. Jimmy got to put down the bass and shine on his main instrument
Patrick Blanco 1:51:55 PM
Jerry has played great music today but this NAIMA is the best music I will hear all day
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:52:15 PM
It is beautiful
Mike Constantine 1:52:40 PM
Probably one of the first twin lead guitars Brian
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:51 PM
Brian D, in 1967 I went to the movies at 8th and Chesnut and saw Blowup which had a scene with the Yardbirds and both guitarists. I imagine you are familiar, but anyone who is not I posted it at the Serenade website
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:54:26 PM
Good call, Patrick
Rob F 1:55:11 PM
I remember borrowing friend's cd to record onto cassette for Wired and Blow by Blow. I think I bought Guitar Shop cd
Russell Woessner 1:55:25 PM
Interesting big band arrangement of Naima. Very majestic
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:57:24 PM
Russ, the CD is so brilliant. Too bad I don't have a CD copy rather than a digital, I "rever" it
Patrick Blanco 1:58:15 PM
I remember recording CDS onto cassette and then returning them to Third Street J. Oh wait I meant to say Sound of Market
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:42 PM
Funniest thing you ever said!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:59:05 PM
Love that one!
Michael Y 2:02:18 PM
Dang you just stopped me mid-dance in the kitchen
Michael Y 2:02:40 PM
There it is!
Brian D 2:02:44 PM
HEY! HEY! HEY!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:04:09 PM
Enjoy Michael Y
Brian D 2:05:32 PM
Great instrumental (almost save the HEYs) cover of Over under... by a really fun world folk rock band from Minnesota called Boiled in Lead (as in the element pb)
Brian D 2:08:43 PM
Happenings Ten Years Time Ago is the great example of Beck and Page dual lead guitar (not duel heh)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:09:52 PM
Hows that, Brian?
Brian D 2:13:03 PM
There is a great early 70s live recording of Led Zep where Page and Plant are doing their call & response, Jimmy plays blues licks, Robert scats them back etc. They do the usual build up that they were doing back then, get to the climactic part... it's a little more complex then.. . Page plays the Over Under Sideways Down riff... Plant laughs so hard! Great fun moment!
Mike Constantine 2:17:08 PM
I had to buy Truth if for no other reason....Beck's Bolero
Brian D 2:17:16 PM
He had a tendency to go into hermit mode for a bit he did... woodshed, work on his cars, then come back with a whole new bag of tricks and fresh sounds
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:18:08 PM
Becks Bolero has an incredible story and personnel but I don't know it well enough to talk about it
Mike Constantine 2:18:53 PM
AM did have its smattering of psychedelic songs....Bubble Puppy, Frijid Pink and Strawberry Alarm Clock
Brian D 2:19:01 PM
Yeah my guitar teacher back when turned me onto Truth. And the others mentioned (Blow by Blow, Wired etc). So glad he did
Patrick Blanco 2:19:09 PM
AM radio never the same after Paul Harvey passed away. And that’s the rest of the Story!!!!
Mike Constantine 2:19:27 PM
Page 10
Rob F 2:19:55 PM
Rod Stewart sounds so good with Beck
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:20 PM
Mike, I know you still have your Bubble Puppy single
Mike Constantine 2:20:51 PM
I don't!.....it broke!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:57 PM
Brian D, good guitar teacher! My piano teacher turned me on to Schubert.
Mike Constantine 2:21:12 PM
Broke it in half, damn it
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:21:25 PM
Patrick, I can dig that
Rob F 2:22:20 PM
love this version
Brian D 2:23:20 PM
These wonderfully evil Beck grunting sounds on the last 2 would scare the a.m. radio top 40 listeners yep
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:23:29 PM
Rod Stewart was never better!
Mike Constantine 2:23:49 PM
Truth....see what I did there?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:24:24 PM
No Mike, I'm still looking!
Rofflestomp 2:24:26 PM
Not too shabby for studio musicians. :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:25:10 PM
Hey RS, listening to this makes me feel like a vampire who just drank a couple quarts of fresh blood
Rofflestomp 2:25:59 PM
This is the stuff of the eternals for sure.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:26:48 PM
haha
Brian D 2:27:25 PM
More great Beck sound effects on this one! Love the way it ends!
Brian D 2:28:13 PM
Tone for days
Mike Constantine 2:30:10 PM
Here we go
Mike Constantine 2:31:00 PM
Keith Moon yelling mid song after he smacks the mic with his stick
Jay Sylvester 2:31:23 PM
Like Adolphe Sax, Beck will be memorized for producing sounds no human ever heard before. He is up there with Django, Jimi and Les Paul. True sonic pioneer. Believe it was Clapton on I Ain't Got You?
Mike Constantine 2:31:38 PM
This song sounded like nothing else then
Mike Tropiano 2:31:46 PM
This one has been the basis for some controversy over Rolling Stone's obit. I heard Al Morganti talking about it this morning.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:31:56 PM
Excellent knowledge, Mike. I didn't know about Keith Moon until recently
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:32:44 PM
Mike, you're kidding?
Mike Constantine 2:32:46 PM
Yeah...Keith wasn't happy in the Who
Brian D 2:32:48 PM
Love the mode/ scale on Bolero.. really stretches the ears
Mike Tropiano 2:33:04 PM
And while I can't recall which, but it was the theme for a radio show (perhaps one of the Mosaics on XPN back in the day)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:33:32 PM
Mike Morganti?
Mike Constantine 2:33:47 PM
This was a must buy....but I was a bit disappointed
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:34:24 PM
Hi Jay, welcome
Mike Tropiano 2:34:57 PM
Al Morganti, sports guy on WIP. I think he plays guitar and was very angry that RS said that Beck had no "signature hit". He said that Joe Bonamassa got into a twitter war with RS over it.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:35:24 PM
Mike, I still love every track!
Rofflestomp 2:35:36 PM
Beck did a playboy interview back in the day that was just way cooler than the pictures. That is when I started to appreciate his musical position. Just a smart guy.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:36:13 PM
Hey Mike T, to hell with Rolling Stone, Yes Joe Bonnamassa! I dig him anyway
Mike Constantine 2:37:15 PM
Rolling Stone?....what's that? : )
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:37:33 PM
Nice, RS. Good to see you had a healthy "intellectual appetite"
Jay Sylvester 2:38:27 PM
Do we need the media to inform us what a signature hit is? Beck transcends that noise with his soundzzzz.
Rofflestomp 2:38:31 PM
Yes, an informative publication.
Mike Tropiano 2:39:24 PM
Haven't even thought about RS in a long time. I have no time whatsoever about anything they say.
Rofflestomp 2:40:07 PM
Pretty sure Freeway Jam was quite the signature piece of work.
Mike Tropiano 2:40:20 PM
I don't know why I ever read it. By the time I had enough money to buy it, I didn't care about the stuff they covered.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:40:54 PM
Yes, they went bad, Mike T.
Patrick Blanco 2:41:07 PM
I find Tiger Beat much more musically informative
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:41:20 PM
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Mike Tropiano 2:41:38 PM
I don't want to excuse them, but they'd probably argue none of thes made the top of the pop charts, but who gives a F.
Mike Constantine 2:42:01 PM
I enjoyed the HST articles.
Brian D 2:42:05 PM
Played this on my guitar so many times in my room... Great touch on here
Patrick Blanco 2:42:43 PM
They have a searing David Cassidy story this month
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:42:59 PM
Mike C, are you referencing High Times?
Mike Tropiano 2:43:18 PM
I don't think Jeff cared, who is (can't say was) such a great artist.
Mike Constantine 2:43:56 PM
.when Hunter S Thompson was a contributor
Mike Tropiano 2:44:09 PM
An in depth expose into Katy Perry's wardrobe changes.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:44:15 PM
Yes, what a "creator"! And they call him quiet. Probably for the reason you just stated.
Mike Constantine 2:44:26 PM
Fine George Marin production on this
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:44:42 PM
What a track!
Mike Constantine 2:44:57 PM
Beautiful
Brian D 2:45:40 PM
The features on crime & such are pretty interesting over the past few decades. That one about the Balkan war killer squad was wild. One guy still walks free and performs as a dj at clubs, festivals etc. Read some other good ones on cartels too
Rob F 2:46:02 PM
I was just listening to this whole album in the car like 3-4 weeks ago
Brian D 2:46:46 PM
Their coverage of music slipped yes. That's been going on for a while
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:46:51 PM
We are running out of time already. Some signature tracks have been passed over
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:47:11 PM
I want to read the Katy Perry article
Rob F 2:47:12 PM
Brian D - what kind of guitar?
Mike Constantine 2:47:27 PM
So hard to do in an hour
Christine 𓅓 2:49:16 PM
It's a challenge for sure.
Mike Constantine 2:49:17 PM
Anyone know what this keybord is the goes back and forth in the stereo image? Very popular in the 70"s
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:49:28 PM
Most incredible cover of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat ever
Patrick Blanco 2:49:36 PM
A Monsignor A prominent Rabbi and the Publisher of Rolling Stone walk into a bar.The maitre D gasps Oh my God.The Rolling Stone publisher says That’s okay you can call me Jann.
Mike Constantine 2:49:43 PM
Yes.
Jay Sylvester 2:50:05 PM
Thanks for the tribute Jerry. Still trying to work through the shock. Saw him at MSG with EC, and he looked as spry as a 20 year old guitar slinger.
Brian D 2:50:21 PM
Reminds me... DJ #6 had a Joe Frank (radio monologue / radio play great) tribute the other day where the background music of Joe's programs was featured. Although not played on his recent tribute, Joe F used 1 of the eerie instrumentals from Blow by Blow very well. The really keyboard dominated one....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:50:36 PM
Your killin it today Patrick.
Mike Constantine 2:51:09 PM
The Joe Frank tribute was great
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:51:16 PM
Thank you, Jay, I understand. Thanks for being here today
gboss 2:51:20 PM
@mike it sounds like a fender rhodes to me
Christine 𓅓 2:51:50 PM
Everyone in the phone booth is applauding wildly, @Patrick! 👏
Brian D 2:52:02 PM
Rob F: well.. first it was my old Ibanez Blazer back in my room at home and school in the 80s-90s. Then later on my Strat.
Mike Constantine 2:52:11 PM
Thanks G....tone sounds right but was that stereo a thing with it?
Russell Woessner 2:52:37 PM
Apparently Mingus wrote Jeff Beck a letter complimenting him on his version of Goodbye Porkpie Hat.
Brian D 2:53:39 PM
Yah McLaughlin and Beck both really nailed it on their Porkpie Hat versions
Christine 𓅓 2:53:48 PM
I really enjoyed the second part of Best Jazz Releases of 2022. Thanks, Jerry!
Mike Tropiano 2:54:03 PM
As always, I enjoyed the great music you share with us Jerry. Many thanks!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:54:31 PM
Thank you, Christine! Mike T! Everybody!
Patrick Blanco 2:55:00 PM
Thanks Jerry Great job on both the 2022 and the Jeff Beck tribute
Mike Constantine 2:55:20 PM
Good stuff....now i'm off to the old same place
gboss 2:55:20 PM
@Mike don't think the Rhodes did stereo output at all, but the effect was probably added in mixing?
gboss 2:55:28 PM
Thanks as always, Jerry!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:56:00 PM
You mean the same old place?
Brian D 2:56:03 PM
Lucky to see Jeff once. Double bill at the Mann w Santana closing. Mid 1990s. Good time. Terry Bozzio back on drums for that tour. The whole "no bass gtr" in band is weird but Jeff gonna be Jeff!
Rob F 2:56:07 PM
Thanks Jerry, great show!
Mike Constantine 2:56:13 PM
G....it's also in some Springsteen songs
gboss 2:56:59 PM
@Mike, wikipedia says that it has "stereo auto pan" as an effect
Brian D 2:57:11 PM
Yah the Blow by Blow in headphones as a young teen was made even better w that Rhodes pinging back and forth left and right. Love that
Mike Constantine 2:57:16 PM
Can't get there from here
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:57:16 PM
