(From wiki): Williams himself debuted "You and Me Against the World" on his 1974 album Here Comes Inspiration, singing it as a traditional love ballad. Helen Reddy considered the lyrics too "paternalistic" to be convincing as a woman's declaration of love for a man. Instead, she interpreted it as a mother singing to a child, which her version clarified by her young daughter Traci's speaking to "Mommy" at the start and end.

@ Esoterica (host) Thanks for the earlier play of "Take Me" by Karen Dalton. That performance is proof perfect of Bob Dylan's praise-filled assessment in his book Chronicles1 that Ms. Dalton (besides being "funky, lanky and sultry" also "had a voice like Billie Holiday’s ... and went all the way with it.”
Esoterica (host) 10:41:44 AM
hi richard! thanks for stopping by. in the recent doc i mentioned, in. my own time (also the album name), dylan's admiration is mentioned.

Richard from Rocky Hill 10:48:36 AM
I see that the promo trailer for the Karen Dalton documentary In My Own Time features a now-famous 1961 photo of Karen on stage at the Green Village folk music club Cafe Wha?, vocalizing with tremendous singer-songwriter-guitarist Fed Neil (most widely known today for penning "Everybody's Talkin' At Me") and a newcomer from the Midwest on harmonica -- a very young Bobby Dylan. Three future Folk Revival legends gathered around one mic! Wow!
Esoterica (host) 10:49:26 AM
wow!! i didn't notice it.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:54:11 AM
One final P.S.: Clearly, Dylan was already highly accomplished on harmonica before he hit NYC. But his virtuosity on that reed instrument is almost completely ignored by his biographers and other music writers. Dylan got some recording experience playing backup harmonica early on, and (as a total unknown in early 1961) he wouldn't have been invited up on stage by Fred & Karen unless he had some serious chops blowin'!
gboss 10:55:24 AM
wow, bonus Esoterica!
Esoterica (host) 10:55:30 AM

hey there gboss!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:04:40 AM
@ Esoterica (host) Yes, indeed, I've read (and highly recommend) The Mayor of MacDougal Street ! For those who don't know, it's the posthumously published (thanks, Elijah Wald) autobiography of the iconoclastic, sardonic and marvelous Folk Revival singer-songwriter Dave Van Ronk.

Esoterica (host) 11:09:53 AM
is that why?
Brian D 11:09:58 AM
Ya that Dave Van Ronk Mayor of MacDougal St book is so good. Good points on Dylan yes. He was already playing and accomplished on piano, harmonica and guitar before he came to the northeast and switched over to the very popular folk "revival" thing. Bob was playing rock and roll, R&B etc already. So it is pretty thin this whole misguided backlash his so called "fans" had when they said he "abandoned folk" for rock and roll. He was already rockin!
Esoterica (host) 11:11:44 AM
right, good point

Richard from Rocky Hill 11:13:28 AM
@ Esoterica (host) And here's a true tidbit -- on two special occasions in the 1990s, I was in bands on shows headlined by Van Ronk. We chatted backstage. He was very gracious to a nobody like me asking him about the old days. And what he told me informally, in private, later came out in print in his book: How he was charmed by this Greenwich Village newcomer kid Bobby Dylan, recognized his huge talent and especially respected his sincere work ethic, learning all he could about folk music.

Dave V.R. has some great interview bits in the Scorcese Dylan doc yes. He knew. Wise sage of the scene there. And as mentioned in the film related chats, the film Inside Llewyn Davis is based on Dave Van Ronk and the Mayor... book. The scenes of him trying to "make it" and traveling to meet the music biz bigwig I remember being pretty accurate w/the book.

Richard from Rocky Hill 11:18:18 AM
@ Brian D RIGHT ON about young Dylan starting as a rock n roller! I've made this point with other writers about folk music (I'm a bluegrass specialist, but ...): We're asking the wrong question: Instead of "Why did Bob go electric?" it s.b. "Why did he come East and go acoustic???"

Richard from Rocky Hill 11:24:24 AM
Princeton professor and official Bob Dylan website historian Sean Wilentz has, I think, the exact right answer: In the early '60s there was a sense rock n roll had lost its way, getting smoothed out by crooners and away from its pungent, authentic blues and rockabilly roots. So Dylan was "going folk" in a large sense to connect with those deep, real and sturdy musical roots.

Couldn't have said it better Richard! Headlines and mis-believed myths are easier for people to accept. The whole "going electric at Newport" event has been totally misrepresented. So many angles, views and voices about that day get overshadowed by myths. Many in the actual crowd of people there in the audience LOVED the electric set. And they loved electric sets by Paul Butterfield and other acts that weekend. Sounds like the reports of a poor sound system were the main problems

@ Esoterica (host) It's truly fascinating to me that the Coen brothers used Van Ronk's life & music - especially his classic album Inside Dave Van Ronk and incidents in his book - to create their film Inside Llewyn Davis ... and yet ... the grimly self-consumed Davis is nothing like the wryly humorous, slyly sardonic and very self-aware Van Ronk. Not a criticism of the film, just pointing it out.

right, richard. i heard criticism of that as well. my friend stephen petrus who writes about folk music revival said the same thing as you.
Brian D 11:33:18 AM

Esoterica (host) 11:33:46 AM

-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 11:38:14 AM
Thanks, Brian D. I mentioned it because I thought it was just a situation of the two people liked each other and wanted to perform together. Sometimes artists just genuinely and organically try a different style of art. And other people just enjoy hating stuffs. Oh bother.
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:38:18 AM
And in closing, I'll point this out, too: Look closely at the cover of the Inside Dave Van Ronk album (the photo was also used for the autobiography cover). Van Ronk is leaning in a doorway. There, at his feet (and easy to miss) is a little black cat, peering out, seemingly about to leap over the threshold and run away -- clearly the inspiration for the film's tragic (and ongoing) escaped cat incident!

Brian D 11:47:09 AM
Forgot about that Cincinnati comp
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:47:33 AM
@ Brian D YES! Confirming your take on the infamous Dylan-goes-electric (backed by the Butterfield Blues Band) at Newport Folk Festival 1965. I once met a fellow who was a volunteer-and-see-the-festival usher. His earwitness testimony: Dylan singing in the regular vocal mics got drowned for the main center audience by the drums & amps on stage: hence the booing! But in the wings, people could hear Bob ok and were cool with giving it a listen, even liked it.
Brian D 11:48:38 AM
I've been to many a show where I had to move around and find a better sound. Sound, speakers, PA systems, empty vs full of bodies... all different factors in how the sound travels and hits the ear.

Final Three Mins?! Boooo!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:57:47 AM
@ Brian D Exactly. If the sound booth people had thought to turn up Dylan's vocal mic to compete with the Butterfield band drums & guitar amps -- and if that could have been done without causing feedback -- this might have been the Famous (not Infamous!) Dylan Goes Electric! But this audience of Bob fans hung -- literally -- on his every word. Hence the upfront/center section booing that day because his singing was inaudible. A shame: Bob and band rehearsed all night to play a good set.
