Quartet of Andrew Bernstein (saxophone/percussion), Max Eilbacher (bass/electronics), Owen Gardner (guitar), and Sam Haberman (drums) from Baltimore, Maryland. The band plays experimental music with elements of krautrock, post-punk, Appalachian and African musical traditions, polyrhythmia, arcane tunings and modular synthesis. The band uses the just intonation tuning system favored by avantgarde composers La Monte Young and James Tenney, so the musicians are playing hand-modified guitars with repositioned frets, re-tuned and customized by Gardner.

The Pointer Sisters Fire Bruce Springsteen
Energy Planet Records 1978
Anita sang lead vocal on this Springsteen cover that became a big hit for The Pointer Sisters and was released as a single. Record producer Richard Perry had introduced the song to the Pointers by playing them a tape of Bruce Springsteen singing it, causing Anita Pointer to say: "It's too low for me: I guess you want Ruthie to sing it" to which Perry replied: "No – I want you to sing it." Anita later recalled we had had gold albums before but I didn't realize what a difference a gold single made 'cause...that one song [is played] over and over all over the world. ['Fire'] really became a major hit for us and made a total difference in our career."

Billy MacKenzie and Alan Rankine formed The Associates in Dundee, Scotland, in 1976. They released a self-funded 7" of Boys Keep Swinging mere weeks after David Bowie had released his original. This scam got them a publishing deal with Bowie's publishers and a proper record deal. By 1980 they were touring with The Cure and signed to Fiction Records, for whom they recorded The Affectionate Punch. At the turn of the year they relocated to Situation Two and put out a string of singles, later compiled on the album Fourth Drawer Down, recorded using money from major labels who were expecting demos to be produced with their cash. In tandem with their increasing consumption of cocaine and speed, the group's music became increasingly deranged and experimental. John Murphy and Michael Dempsey (ex-The Cure) became official members.

Hello Rob! previous show still going!

Lizbot (host) 5:04:48 PM
@Rob - Is it still ridiculously warm in Maryland? I'm staring out my window at the sunset and it was pretty damn warm in Philly yesterday and today. My dog has been LOVING it, though! She is getting extra-long walks - much longer than the usual hurried, chilly January walks!

Lizbot (host) 5:14:43 PM
@Rob from Maryland - I've always loved The Associates and I've always loved Belle & Sebastian and I didn't realize that connection until Stuart Murdoch posted about it in the light of Rankine's death this week! He said originally B&S just had a couple songs, and Rankine said he'd like to release the songs on his Electric Honey label but encouraged them to flesh out a full album first! I always knew Tigermilk was on Electric Honey before Jeepster re-released it, but didn't realize it was Rankine

Hello Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 6:00:11 PM
Hi Mary! - I started the Cobra episode earlier today but didn't get a chance to finish it yet!
Mary Jones 6:00:44 PM
No worries, it’s a long one.
Lizbot (host) 6:01:32 PM
@Mary - haha, usually I listen in one sitting, but I normally never listen on Thursdays before my show. I was just procrastinating!
Mary Jones 6:02:08 PM
We don’t normally release them early like that—I messed up the AM and PM
Lizbot (host) 6:03:50 PM
@Mary - I'm sure someone has pointed this out by now, but I think the movie Dennis was thinking of was Rhinestone with Stallone and Dolly Parton! I was shouting out Rhinestone! it's Rhinestone! But yeah, supposedly a notoriously bad movie. I never saw the full thing, but I remember it coming on TV once late at night when I was a teen and I feel asleep during it. All I remember is one of them hanging from the ledge of a window, and I might have entirely dreamt that!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:46 PM
@Mary - I think Dennis said Rhinestone Cowboy
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 6:07:20 PM
"seabird fly home" ?!
Lizbot (host) 6:08:20 PM
@rob - haha, this song is made for you! This band is from Peru, so you gotta think of Peruvian seabirds
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 6:10:31 PM
@Lizbot, boobies, pelicans, terns, frigatebirds!
Mary Jones 6:12:40 PM
@Lizbot yep, and Rhinestone needs to go on the list.
Mary Jones 6:13:05 PM
I don’t care how bad it is, I need to see it.
Lizbot (host) 6:17:32 PM
@Mary - I was thinking of that possibility once Dennis reminded me of it! I might have to watch it in full before hearing the pod cover it. I really need to know if one of them hanging out the window of a tall building was a vivid dream or not! I mainly think of 9 to 5 and the over the top tearjerker Steel Magnolias when I think of Dolly in movies. Steel Magnolias introduced me to the red velvet cake - it was armadillo-shaped in the movie! That stuck out to me!
Lizbot (host) 6:17:44 PM
@Mary - Never saw A Smoky Mountain Christmas
Mary Jones 6:20:33 PM
Honestly? Smoky Mt Christmas is good hokey tv movie fun.
Mary Jones 6:21:01 PM
Oh, that’s definitely the first time I saw red velvet cake too!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:21 PM
@Mary - Speaking of Christmas movies, since I was saying in the chat last week that I rewatched Fannie & Alexander for the first time in a couple decades last month, I noticed this time around that the playroom in the cozy christmas-y house (pre-stern step-dad) has a straw gavlebocken/yule goat! I never would've known the significance the first time I saw the movie, but thanks to my fam's obsession with the Gavle Goat, I know do!
Mary Jones 6:24:07 PM
Oh my goodness—I didn’t realize that! I need to rewatch—or maybe watch the 5 hour tv version.
Lizbot (host) 6:25:16 PM
@Mary - Yeah, I gotta dig up the extra long version. I watched the 3-hour one

We. Have. Now. Achieved. Full. On. Lizbot. Levels.
Lizbot (host) 7:24:13 PM
@George - there's a little more to it than that, but not much. So many sophisti-pop bands come from Scotland!
Lizbot (host) 7:24:23 PM
@Brian D - haha, I am hyper now
Brian D 7:24:51 PM
THAT is how you lead into a chorus there
Lizbot (host) 7:25:04 PM
Joan Armatrading lives with her wife on the Isle of Mann and is forever a Badass of the Highest Order
Brian D 7:26:17 PM
A once in a while MTV moment Drop The Pilot. When anything went. Just about everybody had a spin across all genres
Lizbot (host) 7:27:11 PM
@Number 6 - True! I was thinking of you during the "6!" in that song!
Brian D 7:27:58 PM
9 of 1. 3/4 of a dozen of another as my uncle says.
Lee Chandler 7:29:46 PM
*snatches mimeograph paper from Brian’s hand. “It should read BADASS of the Highest Order”.
Lizbot (host) 7:31:00 PM
mmm, trilly flutes tickling the airwaves
Brian D 7:31:32 PM
It should have.. but it read "redrO tsehgiH eht fo SSADAB". We had a sub that day
Lizbot (host) 7:31:39 PM
@Brian D - Yeah, the only good version of MTV that ever existed!
Lizbot (host) 7:32:24 PM
@Brian D - I'll take two reams of Armatrading brand scented mimeograph paper, please. I need it for the station's supply cabinet!
Lizbot (host) 7:32:37 PM
slinky time
Brian D 7:33:23 PM
BLOTTO, Joe King Carrasco, Ebn Ozn, Joan Armatrading, Ned and the Slugs, Bow Wow Wow, Kid Creole and the Coconuts....then... Iron Butterfly and Blue Cheer... and then... that era of MTV... never know what comes next.
Lizbot (host) 7:33:31 PM
I don't know if you're still here, TAndy, but I'm making note of that Daikaiju jellyfish track
Number 6 7:33:49 PM
@ Lizbot- The original PBS version of Lathe of Heaven is on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8VRbaVNvSA
Number 6 7:34:13 PM
The movie is a must see.
Brian D 7:34:13 PM
... flies all green and buzzin'...
Brian D 7:34:45 PM
...la tortura nunca se detiene
Brian D 7:35:13 PM
This is also very Richard Wright circa Floyd soundtrack era
Lizbot (host) 7:36:06 PM
@Number 6 - Nice! Gonna have to watch later!
Brian D 7:36:16 PM
Any South American 70s funk soul is like a magnet to me
Number 6 7:36:53 PM
@ Lizbot- The 2002 remake isn't so great.
Brian D 7:37:00 PM
..and then... the bass it dropped
Lizbot (host) 7:37:01 PM
@Brian D - I remember ZZ Top's "TV Dinners" coming on far too often
Brian D 7:37:18 PM
I even like the chicken... if the sauce is not too blue
Brian D 7:38:05 PM
if they only had a video for Master of Sparks with actual footage
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 7:38:10 PM
I just freakin love this band. Once listened them for most of a trip between VT and Philly.
Lizbot (host) 7:38:28 PM
@Addie - They're sooo good!
Brian D 7:39:07 PM
Yes and the 21 different videos for Leave It marathon hahaha
Lizbot (host) 7:40:00 PM
@Brian D - The misadventure in that song is straight outta Action Park and that oddball 80s Irish movie my parents took me to, Eat the Peach!
Brian D 7:41:00 PM
Class Action Park! Fun docu I saw last year.
Lizbot (host) 7:41:05 PM
@Brian D - If Eat the Peach is available anywhere, check it out if you don't know that one. Bored Irish guys in the Connacht somewhere build a dome cage to drive a motorcycle upside down in
Brian D 7:41:28 PM
Oh... so in. So in for that one. Sounds great
Lizbot (host) 7:41:38 PM
@Brian D - I saw that. Crazy thing is, one of my closest friends revealed a few years back that her parents' first date was to Action Park!
Brian D 7:42:22 PM
Hey... I dropped the ring in that 50 degree spring fed water pool .. just dive down to find it and it's yours!
Brian D 7:43:33 PM
It had everything, Friday the 13th meets Meatballs meets Rollercoaster or whatever theme park movie. Kids running the asylum.
Lee Chandler 7:43:37 PM
I remember seeing Art of Noise on MTV & losing my 10yr old mind at the weirdo coolness.
Lizbot (host) 7:44:00 PM
@Brian D - Ha! The bizarre union of a Connecticut librarian and an electrician from Long Island...trying to make small talk amongst the unruly drunk teens daring each other to fly off the alpine slide track
Brian D 7:44:07 PM
Golden Earring Twilight Zone was a weird video.
Lee Chandler 7:45:05 PM
Flying off the alpine slide track was optional?
Brian D 7:45:24 PM
We charge extra for that
Lizbot (host) 7:46:40 PM
@Lee - I believe someone in the doc Class Action Park said they saw a severed finger alongside that track
Lizbot (host) 7:47:13 PM
@Brian D - I don't remember the Golden Earring video, but I'm gonna have to look that one up tonight
Brian D 7:47:31 PM
Donal Lunny and Paul Brady do the music for Eat the Peach! Sold and Sold again!
Lizbot (host) 7:47:48 PM
This is what I deem AGGRESSIVELY FRETLESS
Lizbot (host) 7:48:03 PM
Total Goo Assault
Lizbot (host) 7:48:22 PM
Not unlike an army of jellyfish
Brian D 7:49:56 PM
Looks like this may be the entire film... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDYHjG5Tnds
richard lyons 7:50:01 PM
Thanks for the great show, Lizbot! 😁
Brian D 7:51:15 PM
Maxfield Parrish art
Lee Chandler 7:52:42 PM
Haven’t watched it yet, but will soon! When you left Action park, you wore your scrapes like you slid into third base on the red dirt field while wearing shorts as a badge of honor. And surviving.
Lizbot (host) 7:53:32 PM
@BRian D - Yup, my dad was into Parrish and had some prints on the wall so Dali's Car album cover was instantly recognizable where I got into the waking hour
Lizbot (host) 7:53:47 PM
Thanks for listening, Richard Lyons!
Brian D 7:55:07 PM
Lee: with the dark orange/red Betadine stains on the wounds from the nurse
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 7:55:33 PM
Thanks for the music tonight, Lizbot. Stay warm & stay cool and catch you next time!
Brian D 7:56:13 PM
The dark orange badge of courage that screams "hey look at that injured kid"
Lizbot (host) 7:56:37 PM
@Lee Chandler / Brian D / et.al. - I had scary enough experiences at the old original Great Adventure! That place was NOT well run! My mom's pocketbook was stolen in the haunted house there by one of the employees, who then slunk back into the darkness! Sadly, the haunted house burned down the next day and there were casualties
Number 6 7:56:39 PM
Thanx for another wunnerful show, BCNU!
Lee Chandler 7:57:08 PM
Ha! Thx for the musical goodness! Seems like a very convenient fire..
Lizbot (host) 7:57:12 PM
Also at the original Great Adventure, the salt n pepper ride capsule came loose and a guy fell out to his death
Brian D 7:57:24 PM
Ya I heard stories about Great Adventure and other parks, safety records etc. Oh well... ye takes ye chances and ye....
Brian D 7:57:45 PM
O sorry did not see the salt and pepper comment.
Lizbot (host) 7:58:36 PM
My main positive memory of Great Adventure is my mom cheaping out on buying the overpriced fried greasy food there, so she had us eat pb sandwiches in the hot car in the parking lot and my older brother leaned back, thinking the door was closed, and fell right out of the car!
Brian D 7:58:38 PM
Great show Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 7:58:52 PM
Thx, Brian D!
Brian D 7:59:05 PM
Remember save your soda cans to get a discount at the gate....
Shut Up Wesley 7:59:22 PM
Stay mutual, @Number 6! BCNU!
Lizbot (host) 7:59:31 PM

Brian D 7:59:55 PM
The Feeling is Mutual, Omaha, it is indeed a wild wild kingdom....
Lizbot (host) 8:01:01 PM

Lizbot (host) 8:01:18 PM
Thx, TAndy!
Lizbot (host) 8:01:42 PM
Thx, Bri! Thanks everyone! Tune in for a BONUS Lizbot show tomorrow from 3-5 PM!
Lizbot (host) 8:02:48 PM
oh yeah, Arman Doley! I knew I had this song!
Shut Up Wesley 8:03:08 PM
Good evening, all! Always remember, you may experience cramping in your wrist and fingers, but practice will overcome this. 🪕
Lizbot (host) 8:03:52 PM
I'm gonna go sink my fangs in some chicken fangers for dinner right now
