Anayampatti S. Ganesan (born in Chennai on 22 May 1932) is a violinist and one of the few masters of the "jalatharangam". It is also present in Hindustani music as the "jal tarang", literally meaning 'waves in water'. It is a melodic percussion instrument that originates from the Indian subcontinent, known as far back as the 4th or 6th century, consisting of a set of ceramic or metal bowls filled with water. The bowls are played by striking the edge with beaters, one in each hand.

Uppalapu Srinivas (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) pioneered the mandolin in Carnatic classical music. Because he was a child prodigy, he was sometimes called the Mozart of classical Indian music. He modified the electric western instrument, using five single strings instead of the traditional four doubled strings to suit the Carnatic playing style (sustained notes and musical ornamentation).

Good morning again, TAndy. I hope this show helps you relax.

Sangeet Team (host) 9:03:54 AM
Sangeet can be good chore music (as long as it's not vacuuming).
jimboo 9:24:04 AM
What if it's an ultra fancy vacuum that provides the correct sympathetic tone? Add a voltage regulator to tune it!

They lived long ago in a LA LA land I am told. Somewhere west. Must be fiction as the myth states that they built a city on a desert. And a dry "river". Shenanigans indeed.
Brian D 9:59:22 AM
Eleven bowls in the picture. Sorry did not hear the info if mentioned earlier, but do they use different numbers of bowls for different scales etc?
Sangeet Team (host) 10:00:51 AM
For Jalatarang, 11 bowls is on the low side. A good arrangement should have about 19. They are 'tuned' by adjusting water levels.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:01:52 AM
Up to 22 bowls. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jal_tarang

*smashes tea cup* Good morning everyone! *gets another tea cup*
Brian D 10:03:15 AM
I mentioned before a great percussionist Arto T in Al DiMeola's band in the 1990s who had some water filled bowls in his assortment of goodies. Love that sound. He would lift and swirl too which gets other in between tones.
Brian D 10:03:27 AM
My wife asked if the bowls contain tea?
Sangeet Team (host) 10:04:37 AM
Ha! Tea would stain the carpet! If you see the photo, there are dark wet spots around his bowls. There is some amount of splashing which requires intermittent refills.
Brian D 10:05:03 AM
A cure for water on the Knee or so I am told by Mr Ray Davies of the Kinks (and other ailments)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:06:11 AM
But I suppose different liquids might alter the quality of tone. Sounds like my research project for this afternoon!

Now.... a fabric dyeing method involving colored liquids in the bowls of the Jalatarang (chakra colors, tea etc). The player creates a unique pattern of spills on the fabric underneath.

Tea goes perfectly with this raga. Or chai. It's cool hearing the intermittent vocals from the accompanying musicians here.

Forgiving the temporary exit off of this beautiful scenic route... I found some interesting releases. Santiago Molina (Argentinean multi instrumentalist) with trad and orig pieces blended w/Celtic sounds: https://santigaitero.bandcamp.com/album/desde-un-nuevo-lugar

And a Steve Roach release that is a hodge podge of diff stuff over the past decade or so some released, some alternates, some recent discoveries etc: https://steveroachexclusive.bandcamp.com/album/subtle-twist-of-fate
Sangeet Team (host) 10:23:52 AM
@Christine, I think those are appreciative exclamations from the audience.
Christine 𓅓 10:25:01 AM
They sound like a lovely live audience.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:25:16 AM
Thanks, Brian. I must have about 60 Steve Roach CDs - which is still a small portion of his prolific output.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:26:11 AM
This recording comes from her private collection. It may have been made at a small house concert - which are the best for both audience and performer.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:27:19 AM
Performers of Indian Classical Music often get charged by visual and auditory interaction with a small audience in an intimate setting.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:28:39 AM
For example, there can be a mutual nodding of heads when the melody resolves on the main beat in the rhythm cycle.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:29:36 AM
Which in this case, you can hear when she returns to the melody. The last note here is the first beat of the cycle.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:29:59 AM
Teental, 16 beats.
Brian D 10:30:37 AM
Thank you for the info on that Dave!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:30:42 AM
So all her improvisation within the cycle resolves on that main beat.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:31:14 AM
You can appreciate the music more if you have an understanding of what's going on.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:32:16 AM
To the unfamiliar, it can sound like random noodling.
Christine 𓅓 10:34:49 AM
Great information, thanks Dave.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:36:39 AM
So once you recognize that 1st beat, keep counting (still using a 16 beat cycle here). You'll hear the cycle repeat many times, but it will always resolve at that first beat.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:38:33 AM
And when it does, the audience exclaims "Wah!"
Sangeet Team (host) 10:39:20 AM
Those house concerts are the best.
Christine 𓅓 10:43:30 AM
I'm listening and counting 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ 9️⃣ 1️⃣6️⃣
Sangeet Team (host) 10:48:07 AM
This Carnatic piece is in "Adi tala", an eight beat cycle.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:53:28 AM
At the end of the show today, I have the Bengali version of "Auld Lang Syne".
Sangeet Team (host) 11:17:39 AM
For those counting at home, the first (slow) part of Ajoy Chakrabarty's performance is in the uncommon "Jhumra" rhythm cycle of 14 beats. The second half is the more common 16 beat cycle.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:27:00 AM
He now just switched to the faster Teental of 16 beats.
GueloLove 11:27:03 AM
definitely increases enjoyment to count along.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:27:38 AM
Good morning, GueloLove. Good to see you again.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:30:53 AM
In this case, he hits the 1st beat on the word "Ek" (which also means 'one').
Sangeet Team (host) 11:37:13 AM
Often during improvisation, you'll hear the syllables "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da & Ni". That is literally "Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti".
Christine 𓅓 11:41:38 AM
Excellent info...this is a contunul education.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:43:09 AM
Ghazals, are like love sonnets set to music. In their semi-classical presentation, they are analogous to a 'thumri'. But ghazals put much greater emphasis on the Urdu lyrics.
