The result was the album "Step II" (which had hits like "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" on it,) which skyrocketed Sylvester to international notoriety. The album landed Cowley a job as a back-up musician on Sylvester's subsequent world-wide tour.

hello! hello! I have a cold but am up for a hyped up (cold medicine-fueled) show!
Number 6 5:02:41 PM
Hello, hello, fancy meeting you here!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:12 PM
Hi Number 6! Ha!
Number 6 5:03:40 PM
I forgot who did that song.
Lizbot (host) 5:04:15 PM
I don't pull the wings off...butterflies. Ludus sings about purple, and I just realized I've queued a Lene Lovich song about the color blue, though this is not a theme! I have done color themes several times in the past, just a coincidence
Number 6 5:05:11 PM
Ken Nordine had a whole album about colors.
Lizbot (host) 5:07:43 PM
@Number 6 - Oh, I know, I bust that thing out from time to time! It's great. His "word jazz" stuff
Lizbot (host) 5:08:37 PM
@Number 6 - How was your holiday? I managed to not get sick until after the holidays...if you don't count NYE/New Year's Day (and I don't)
Number 6 5:09:04 PM
I've played his stuff every now and then. My holiday was great.
Number 6 5:09:56 PM
Sorry you are sick. I went to my inlaws, so no cooking for me.
Number 6 5:10:38 PM
I ate too much, as usual.
Number 6 5:12:13 PM
Seems kind of quiet in here. Everyone must have hangovers or something.
Lizbot (host) 5:18:27 PM
@Number 6 - Yeah, not sure what's up with that, but I didn't actually post a promo for today's show on social media until 4:10 pm or so, and I usually at least try to post it by 3:30 and ideally earlier!
Dennisons 5:18:27 PM
Hey 6 and Bot! I’m sick as well. Just got off of work.

Lizbot (host) 5:27:04 PM
@Dennisons - Blech. This is what the pandemic has become. We live in one endless amorphous respiratory viral cloud that encompasses RSV & the myriad COVID variations, and it drifts everywhere we go collectively, like Charlie Brown and his personal storm cloud, but for the whole human race. Fun!

Currently not sick & don’t want to be, however, sick sleep aided by otc-I-don’t-care-what-the-ingredients-are, is one of the few times I don’t wake up exhausted by my dreams.
Lizbot (host) 5:34:42 PM
@Number 6 - Let Me Clear My Throat was one song I was actually dance to at parties in college, but few others. It was consistently played at the parties I went to
Lizbot (host) 5:35:40 PM
@Lee Chandler - I have a love-hate relationship with cold medicine. It usually makes me feel a bit dizzy. Also, the kind with sleep aid, like NyQuil, usually just gives me crazy nightmares, so I only take the DayQuil stuff
Lee Chandler 5:36:28 PM
Number 6, thank you for playing that also! And introducing Ruby to my world.
Lizbot (host) 5:37:01 PM
That goes for all sleep aids. I had one of the scariest nights of my life on Excedrin PM! Those pills don't work on my brain. They usually don't even help me sleep, and when I do eventually fall asleep I have vivid nightmares
Number 6 5:38:12 PM
@ Lee, Laura Esterman plays Ruby, and was also on 12 Joe Frank shows.
Lizbot (host) 5:38:53 PM

Hi Francis! This IS Sparks...plus Franz Ferdinand
Lee Chandler 5:47:20 PM
Yes! Sparks-that’s it! I loved your Felt story.
Lizbot (host) 5:47:47 PM
@Lee - I don't mind vivid dreams as long as they don't turn into nightmares. I hate that state where I've taken a nighttime cold medicine and it just makes me loopy without helping me sleep
Francis 5:48:07 PM
nice!! I had heard a few songs, but nothis one..cool!
Lizbot (host) 5:48:48 PM
@Lee - Somewhere I have that Scottish guy's business card with his store's name on it and all I remember is that it had a big old toadstool on it. I wonder if it's still in business...

I saw Robyn Hitchcock tour for this album in 2006 and I drew him a cake slice with "cake" written on it in icing, inspired by a similar slice I had just seen in a display case in NYC's Chinatown, but I kinda looked at me confused. I always associate his music with food since he has so many songs that mention all types of food, even when the it's all a metaphor
Lizbot (host) 5:54:47 PM

@Dennisons - Funny you should ask. One thing to know about Guerrilla Toss is that they started out as a noise band (which was the format they were still playing in when I first saw them live at PhilaMOCA years ago.) But THEN the singer decided to get way poppier, while still being experimental, and I like that stuff better. I def like that Heavy Light album
Lizbot (host) 6:23:37 PM
Thanks, George!
Lizbot (host) 6:26:05 PM
@Rob from Maryland - oh god, not only was the remake of that song on the radio entirely too much in my teen years, but you're giving me flashbacks to a particularly unnerving AirBnB we rented in Florida that had THE MOST AGGRESSIVE SIGNAGE on EVERY wall surface and counter backsplash. Endless "Wine O'Clock" type signs with flip-flops in relief. You couldn't even escape it on the staircase!
Lizbot (host) 6:26:19 PM

@liz skipping this week, I think we’re still doing Cobra for next week. I think Kate Bush has been moved to next Christmas.
Dennisons 6:43:58 PM
Mary’s Xmas movie plans got sidetracked when someone mentioned the Peewee special. And Covid.
Lizbot (host) 6:44:35 PM
@Dennisons - Yeah, I figured as much! I wasn't even gonna ask what with yr COVID in November, followed by Mary's!
Lizbot (host) 6:46:04 PM
@Dennisons - Honestly, the Kate Bush Christmas Special isn't really all that Christmas-y, but it IS predictably weird. She barely had any albums at that point, but she DOES sing December Will be Magic Again (Let's HOPE so!)
Lizbot (host) 6:47:50 PM
@Dennisons - I believe Tavie mentioned Pee Wee's special and I saw that post a couple minutes later and added that Grace Jones in it, displaying her unique style! I love that special, but it's more manic than it is cozy! Not for sleepy/cozy fireside viewing so much!
Lizbot (host) 6:50:21 PM
@Dennisons - I DID, however, recently revisit a movie you guys covered last December - Fanny & Alexander! Watched it last week. It had been a while since I'd seen a Bergman (and I still have no intention of watching that Scenes from a Marriage remake...heard bad things.) But Fanny & Alexander was such a delightful, lush and creepy movie, I thoroughly enjoyed rewatching it for the first time in many years!
Dennisons 6:50:58 PM

Ossy Hyouka 6:52:55 PM
Evening Liz
Lizbot (host) 6:53:05 PM
@Rob from Maryland - Quite alright! You weren't the first to put it in my head in relation to that accursed airbnb! It was stuck in my head the ENTIRE trip! That was years ago and I still think of those signs and shudder!
Lizbot (host) 6:53:08 PM
Hello Ossy!
Ossy Hyouka 6:53:42 PM
Hope you had a great Christmas!
Lizbot (host) 6:53:52 PM
@Dennisons - How long was the version you watched? I remember from the pod a year ago you discussed a longer version. I watched the 3+ hr verison
Lizbot (host) 6:54:13 PM
@George - You're making me hungry!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:56 PM
@Dennisons - Oh yeah, it was wonderful. I adore Pee Wee. The guests were JAM-PACKED in there! That added to the manic vibe, in addition to the overall hyper Pee Wee tone! The fruitcake cracked me up
Lizbot (host) 6:56:31 PM
@Ossy - It was good! I wasn't sick yet then!
Lizbot (host) 6:57:29 PM
@OSsy - I hope you had a great holiday! I got in everything I wanted to do on Christmas itself, but boy was I sleep-deprived! (Probably contributed to my current state of sickness!)
Lizbot (host) 6:58:16 PM
I at first entered this song title as "Shrek" and corrected it. Would be a very different vibe...
Dennisons 7:01:49 PM
@liz, the 3 hour version is the theatrical version, there’s a 5 hour version is from a tv version.
Dennisons 7:02:11 PM
@liz, not typing English well.
Lizbot (host) 7:05:25 PM
@Dennisons - oooh, yeah, I have never seen that one. I don't remember the version I saw when I was 19 being that long. Scenes from a Marriage was of course for TV and I watched a very long version of that
Ossy Hyouka 7:07:02 PM
Sounds like Prince!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:33 PM
@Dennisons - The pre-death/stern minister part of the film is so extremely Christmas-y, but now I understand more about Swedish Christmas traditions than I did when I first saw it, thanks to years of attending the Saint Lucia Fest at Old Swedes and also becoming obsessed with the Gävle Goat a number of years ago!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:43 PM
@Ossy - Oh yeah! Kinda does!
Lizbot (host) 7:09:10 PM
@Ossy - Quite possibly an influence on Mockasin, because, honestly, who wasn't influenced by Prince in at least some little way?!
Dennisons 7:09:56 PM
See you everybody, off to podcast land, have a great new year!
Lizbot (host) 7:10:22 PM
See ya, Dennis!
Lizbot (host) 7:10:36 PM
@Dennisons - Don't clear yr throat too much, like I've been doing tonight!
Lizbot (host) 7:13:13 PM
@Dennisons - You've prob already gone into podlandia, but there are two things I noticed in Fanny & Alexander this time around that I never had before - THEY HAVE A STRAW GAVLEBOCKEN (Yule Goat) in the children's playroom!! AND the mom dresses as the angel who gives out presents since Santa does not do that in Swedish lore
Elspeth Abel Slater 7:23:00 PM
This OMD song always makes me feel verklempt
Lizbot (host) 7:23:39 PM
Hi Pethie! Ah, I am glad it's bringing you feels
Francis 7:25:53 PM
LOL - I was too into hardcore and noise in college in the 80's to listen to this, but I like it now
Lizbot (host) 7:26:41 PM
@Elspeth - I hope you had a good holiday. I LOVE those eye/eyelash hairclips!
Lizbot (host) 7:27:23 PM
@Francis - Funny how that happens. I have revisited some genres I wasn't so into in my teens that I enjoy now
Francis 7:30:48 PM
Definitely not as "firey/angry" when I was 19 and jumping off the stage at the hardcore matinee at CBs
Lizbot (host) 7:33:48 PM
@Francis - I used to enjoy getting bruises at Lightning Bolt shows at the First Unitarian Church - they always set up in the back near the merch tables instead of the stage and everyone ran towards and surrounded them and smashed into each other their entire sets. Pure adrenaline rush!
Elspeth Abel Slater 7:34:02 PM
Hello Lizbot! Thank you—I think my Mom procured ‘em from Target! And I hope you’ve had a great holiday too!
Lizbot (host) 7:35:08 PM
@Elspeth - wow, target for the win! I assumed it was some etsy find!
Francis 7:36:19 PM
Dang - I really like LB - always regret not seeing them.. I didn't want to see them recently during the OurTime of Covid
Lizbot (host) 7:38:07 PM
@Francis - Yeah...probably NOT the band to see in the Plague Years!
Lizbot (host) 7:38:54 PM
@Francis - everyone in a lightning bowl crowd is drenched in droplets of sweat and spit!
George Korein 7:46:20 PM

Lee Chandler 7:57:11 PM
Thanks Lizbot!
Ossy Hyouka 7:57:32 PM
Yummy, pasta like rice with chicken noodles soup I'm having and with smelly radishes!
Lizbot (host) 7:57:55 PM
Thanks for listening, Lee Chandler!
Lizbot (host) 7:58:46 PM
@Ossy - oh man, okay I gotta whip together some dinner for myself after this! I have a feeling Hattie & George tore through all that pasta!
Lizbot (host) 7:59:30 PM
See you all in 2023 I hope!
Ossy Hyouka 7:59:41 PM
Hahaha and good night, LOOL
