Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser (director of the Ohr, Pilz, Die Kosmischen Kuriere and Kosmische Musik labels) organized a series of psychedelic jam sessions with Dieter Dierks, Harald Großkopf, Jürgen Dollase, Klaus Schulze, and Manuel Göttsching - from February to May of 1973. The material released from these sessions have been cosmic classics, though largely disowned by the musicians involved.

Manuel Göttsching started out a a beat and blues rock guitarist in the late 1960's Berlin underground scene. But when they were joined by Klaus Schulze (having just left Tangerine Dream), Ash Ra Tempel was born. They abandoned conventional songwriting in favor of free-form improvising, a Krautrock twist on the space-rock music of Pink Floyd and Hawkwind.
