TAndy 9:16:42 AM
Good morning, sir.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:16:54 AM
Hello, TAndy.
TAndy 9:17:27 AM
That's orange tea in the top photo? Sounds delicious.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:20:31 AM
"Orange Pekoe" is a black tea. Nothing to do with oranges.
Jayashri Nagaraja 9:22:25 AM
Thank you for the shout out on Rising Stars, David.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:23:11 AM
You're welcome.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:23:20 AM
Not sure of the origin of "orange" here/ It may be associated with the Dutch "House of Orange", or the coppery color of the oxidized leaves.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:24:31 AM
I have been in a quandary about resuming concert announcements. The website links are impossible to announce on the air.
TAndy 9:26:47 AM
Ooh, I see. I found a larger photo of the tea tin and it appears to be in German. So it may well be Dutch but have been shipped from Germany.
TAndy 9:27:07 AM
Or the orange is just a coincidence 😁
Sangeet Team (host) 9:28:10 AM
Probably not "Dutch" in the sense that it would have been grown in Holland. Just a Dutch company maybe importing and distributing.
karen swaine 9:28:43 AM
my first encounter with Indian music was in 1954 (yes i'm that old) when my mother took me to see "The River".. and the 1st piece you played this morning - especially because of the flute -- was so nostalgic that i had tears in my eyes. i have my mom to thank for exposing me to music most kids my age were never gonna hear!! and thank you, Dave, for the rich selection of Indian music you play on Sangeet.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:32:50 AM
Good morning, Karen! Yes, "The River" directed by Jean Renoir and Satyajit Ray. The intro music is the All India Radio theme, that they used to begin their broadcast day. Always brings back floods of memories to those that grew up in India.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:34:05 AM
I'm glad to have had the privilege to be able to present this music on WPRB since 1986.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:35:17 AM
Oh, you were referring to N. Ramani's flute. That is one of the earlier of the western releases of Indian Classical Music.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:36:08 AM
The World Pacific label, mostly a jazz label, started issuing Indian music as far back as 1959. WAY before it was fashionable.
karen swaine 9:36:29 AM
hi David - yes.. i was referring to the cut from the Soul of Indian Flute... the Sangeet opening theme music is hauntingly beautiful, but i only know it from listening to WPRB.
jimboo 9:37:46 AM
Yeoooo DTeaO! That Miles on the corner track I caught yesterday was STEAMIN
Sangeet Team (host) 9:38:28 AM
The AIR theme for many people was like a morning alarm clock.
TAndy 9:38:56 AM
Good morning Jyashri, Karen, and Jimbeaux
Sangeet Team (host) 9:39:40 AM
Good morning, Jimboo. Yes, the 'unedited master' recording was 3 times longer than what was released on the LP in 1972.
jimboo 9:39:40 AM
yeoO TAndy and Sangeet friends!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:57:43 AM
A Tillana or thillana is a rhythmic piece in Carnatic music that is generally performed at the end of a concert and widely used in classical indian dance performances. It was popularized by Dr. M Balamuralikrishna as well as other musicians.
Christine 𓅓 11:20:29 AM
Good morning Dave, TAndy, Karen, Jayashri & jimboo 🫖 ☕️
Sangeet Team (host) 11:22:35 AM
Good morning, Christine!
Christine 𓅓 11:42:57 AM
That Vyas Brothers 78 single sounds really good for being from the late 1920s. Remastering must really do a lot.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:45:25 AM
There are a few kind people that are lovingly digitizing and cleaning up these old 78 rpm shellac discs before the recordings are lost forever.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:46:50 AM
The Indian recording industry was quite active since the early 1900's. Unfortunately the 78 rpm format is unusable for most people, and the discs are rare and often in poor condition.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:51:00 AM
Usually, the old recordings chosen for preservation are from the most popular artists. Not much of a market for old obscure artists.
Christine 𓅓 11:53:43 AM
Good people they are, remastering almost 100-year old recordings before they're lost forever. But unfortunately the most obscure are left behind.
Christine 𓅓 11:55:27 AM
Thank you, DTO...have a good weekend everybody!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:55:30 AM
Yes, we are. 😶‍🌫️
Sangeet Team (host) 11:56:30 AM
