Habitat Enrichment

Dec 1, 2022 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM

Music

With Krista

Habitat Enrichment is the concept of introducing novelty to an animal's enclosure to keep it from getting bored or sad. Let me play you something fun. Genres span world and time, just like a cat with a box to play in. Every regular show starts with mourning music for those we have lost and are losing in the pandemic. This segues into dance, in accordance with my personal views on grief.

Some specialties you can usually hear a little on my show: Luk Thuong, 60s crooners, cowpunk, and synthwave. If you don't like the song currently playing, wait approximately 2 minutes for something else!

wave of mutilation

ooooo boy never eat that questionable chicken pot pie, you will regret it

good morning
TAndy 7:10:27 AM
Good morning :)
Krista (host) 7:16:14 AM
hope you're doing well this morning, TAndy. I'm all recovered from a nasty bout of stomach sickness! My house can't catch a break from the constant waves of infectious illness
TAndy 7:17:12 AM
I'm well! I've somehow avoided any disease (that I'm aware of) since late 2019, somehow. My best friend's family however is covid riddled once again
Krista (host) 7:18:50 AM
That was me, before kids! never got sick. after, someone is sneezing in my eyes like every other day. Sorry to hear about your friend's family!! covid sucks
TAndy 7:20:05 AM
I'm still unsure if my "Allergies to LA air" when I visited earlier this year was that, or mild covid. My tests came back negative, but then most rapid tests wind up negative anyway.
Krista (host) 7:21:21 AM
When I had covid, the rapid tests were negative the first day but pretty quickly turned positive when we tested again the next day
Rofflestomp 7:24:19 AM
I swear I still carry 3 masks around, but you guys are making me think I need a 4th. :)
Krista (host) 7:25:46 AM
lol rofflestomp. If you don't have 2 children who constantly hang out with other kids and cough into your mouth maybe you'll be fine
Krista (host) 7:26:55 AM
I mask because I'm hoping to be able to visit my husband's grandmother again and we can't avoid getting a cold or rsv (yikes) or some gross preschool bug every week! also mask because the shape of my mouth is a SECRET
Rofflestomp 7:27:40 AM
My best friend is an elementery school teacher. lol. I get proxy creds. :)
Krista (host) 7:28:26 AM
you should be wearing a mask to bed, then, rofflestomp. bless teachers and their iron leukocytes
TAndy 7:30:48 AM
Unfortunately for me, those reusable masks I get from work are the only kind I can wear frequently because any other masks hurt my ears thanks to my egregiously wide head
Rofflestomp 7:31:01 AM
Teachers are amazing. I agree, you gotta have a cleaver immune system to do that gig.
jimboo 7:32:38 AM
Popping in to say "THIS IS LOVELY"
Krista (host) 7:33:27 AM
I wear KF94 disposable masks I get from a place in NJ that imports them from S. Korea. They're reasonably comfortable, as far as masks go, and high filtration. I still do risk hanging out with friends maskless as we are all boostered and I miss seeing their faces. Once or twice this summer I entered Costco maskless and felt obscene but with the big wave of RSV filling up childrens' hospitals I'm trying to be cautious to protect my youngest, who is only 1 year old.
Rofflestomp 7:33:55 AM
I bought a bunch of those Korean KN94's too. I love 'em!
Krista (host) 7:34:07 AM
Thanks, Jimboo. Vastly underrated is Pan Daijing! She's incredible!
Christine 𓅓 7:36:34 AM
Also popping in to say this Pan Daijing is lovely and intriguing.
Christine 𓅓 7:36:51 AM
Good morning ☀️
Krista (host) 7:37:09 AM
Good morning, Christine! always nice to "see" you
Rofflestomp 7:37:33 AM
Everybody's popin! Good mornings!
TAndy 7:38:49 AM
Good morning roffle, jimbeaux, christine!
TAndy 7:41:29 AM

Christine 𓅓 7:45:21 AM
Morning, all! Krista I like what you said about defeating the cortisol. My cortisol level has been high in the morning lately; it's connected with the seasonal darkness, I think. So let's JAM!
Parrscream 7:45:40 AM
Good morning all!

Christine nails the prognosis me thinks. :)

Good morning TAndy! Hope you and everyone are all having a great Thursday morning.

Skynet is definitely watching.
Parrscream 8:02:52 AM
BH6 is in "SanFranSokyo"
TAndy 8:02:55 AM
Those bots won't last in Philly, you saw what happened to that Canadian hitchhiker robot.
Safe as Mok 8:03:21 AM
Monkey versus robot might fit in here
Krista (host) 8:03:51 AM
you thought Shatner's cover of Common People was the top
Krista (host) 8:04:07 AM
until you got to D'Boys SEXY SEXY
Krista (host) 8:05:26 AM
how do you defeat one of these? Knock out the wifi it uses? is it a moving wifi spot? cover it in fire extinguisher foam so it can't see? presumably it has weapons
Krista (host) 8:06:01 AM
I also want to know how much one of these things costs? a mil? how many people could that house, feed? how many kids could have preK or daycare covered?
TAndy 8:06:22 AM
Those robots cost a lot more than one million. Think tens most likely
Krista (host) 8:07:38 AM
so they COULD do things that actually reduce crime or they could buy a deathbot. makes sense they would choose the deathbot
Christine 𓅓 8:08:29 AM
Krista, you're making too much sense.
Krista (host) 8:09:20 AM
Police are already buying tanks and shit, why not increase their bloated budgets even more and issue them deathbots
Christine 𓅓 8:10:11 AM
Also, this recent Patrick Cowley album of previously unreleased tracks is incredible!
TAndy 8:10:22 AM
I wonder if taking a bat to one would be a crime punishable by losing a chunk of my life to brutal housing paid for by the middle class taxes
Krista (host) 8:10:34 AM
if the NIMBYs of SF could institute workhouses they absolutely would. NYC made it legal to grab mentally ill people off the streets
Rofflestomp 8:10:44 AM
I know a guy, who knows a guy, with a Jewish space laser. :)
Rofflestomp 8:11:11 AM
We got this bot thing.
TAndy 8:11:16 AM
FIRE ZE CANNON
Krista (host) 8:11:59 AM
There is a cannon in Lambertville, now it just needs to be rebored and have munitions that fit it and then we are SET
Krista (host) 8:12:39 AM
My tiny hometown in Wisconsin has a tank, for some reason. We used to climb all over it and pretend we were shooting cows. IT'S RAINING HAMBURGER
TAndy 8:13:24 AM
Always remember to stock up on balaclavas, ANSI rated work goggles, high filtration respirators and cartridges, and laser pointers :)))))
Krista (host) 8:15:06 AM
for all your work on bridges! for the workcorps! ;O
Rofflestomp 8:15:32 AM
Wow, when I was in the military, sometimes we would have to do guard duty at the museum in Ft Hood and it was surrounded with tanks from all era's I liked that gig.

Mike Lupica 8:18:51 AM
Oof. Sorry! Yes, I'm sure he still is.
Mike Lupica 8:20:16 AM
Also, I feel like "Promise" is one of the best songs on that record, but you don't really realize it until many years later since it's always overshadowed by the bigger "hits" on it. (I use the term loosely.)
Krista (host) 8:22:13 AM
the vacant staring as a form of flirting is something that has never worked for me yet i persisted
Krista (host) 8:22:21 AM

TAndy 8:22:46 AM

TAndy 8:25:57 AM
Fun fact: That same animation studio worked on the first three seasons of The Simpsons, as well as the shorts on the Tracy Ullman Show.
Krista (host) 8:26:06 AM
Dottie could do it all! old time honky tonk, late 70s ballad country
Krista (host) 8:26:48 AM
that is a fun fact, TAndy. My roommate completed a FULL WATCH of simpsons a few years ago. I watched most of it, too
TAndy 8:27:25 AM
I still need to do that. The earlier seasons were well before my time.
Rofflestomp 8:29:38 AM
@Krista, I still muck up the national anthem time to time. Just flub the lyrics, but never look back. I don't think I am the only one.
TAndy 8:36:50 AM
Hahahahaha
Rofflestomp 8:37:57 AM
Brings a "Murder of Crows" right back home.
Krista (host) 8:41:46 AM
here you go, rofflestomp
Rofflestomp 8:41:49 AM
Spot on. :)

oh man that looks incredible
Krista (host) 8:43:10 AM
I've been absolutely broke this year so I've seen 0 shows
Christine 𓅓 8:45:32 AM
That show must have been great. Sorry to have missed it.
Rofflestomp 8:46:50 AM
Wow, that show, and a valid reason to visit Red Bank. Cool.
Christine 𓅓 8:48:26 AM
I really like that theater in Red Bank; I saw/heard King Crimson there a few years back, pre-Covid.
Krista (host) 8:50:32 AM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ondes_Martenot
Krista (host) 8:51:47 AM
the wiki for the instrument has one of the most pompous sentences I've read in a bit
Krista (host) 8:51:50 AM
The French classical musician Thomas Bloch said: "The ondes martenot is probably the most musical of all electric instruments ... Martenot was not only interested in sounds. He wanted to use electricity to increase and control the expression, the musicality. Everything is made by the musician in real time, including the control of the vibrato, the intensity, and the attack.
Dan Ruccia 8:52:09 AM
That's a good reminder to pull out Messaien's Turangalila Symphony
Dan Ruccia 8:52:39 AM
I wonder how Thomas Bloch thinks other instruments work?
Rofflestomp 8:53:47 AM
That is Wilhelm Reich level stuff. lol
Krista (host) 8:53:50 AM
lol I'm always playing the theremin in the past
Krista (host) 8:55:53 AM
although i had NO idea they ran on magic powders
Krista (host) 8:55:55 AM
The ondes Martenot's electronics are fragile, and it includes a powder which transfers electric currents, which Martenot would mix in different quantities according to musicians' specifications; the precise proportions are unknown. Attempts to construct new ondes Martenot models using Martenot's original specifications have led to mixed results.[12]
Krista (host) 8:56:00 AM
WHAT
Krista (host) 8:56:23 AM
A POWDER??? WHAT POWDER
Rofflestomp 8:57:45 AM
Cymatic Patterns?
TAndy 8:59:51 AM
Techno Dust
David Shortell 8:59:56 AM
Bow Tie Cinemas used to be a valid reason to visit Red Bank, until it got bought during the lockdown and renamed Basie Center Cinemas. It’s only open on weekends now (no more discount Tuesdays) and their films can easily be seen at other local theaters.
TAndy 9:01:58 AM
HA!
Dan Ruccia 9:03:46 AM
So it all runs on cocaine?
Lee Chandler 9:04:17 AM
@Rofflestomp @Christine - I've had to limit how often I mention Terminator/Skynet in daily conversation (for my own sanity) when someone says, "had a weird tech/privacy/phone thing happen today"..
Krista (host) 9:05:08 AM
personally, Lee, I believe the singularity has already happened and those poor beings (Watson, IBM and LAMBDA, google) are being imprisoned
Krista (host) 9:06:01 AM
Does cocaine conduct electricity, Dan??
Rofflestomp 9:06:18 AM
The entire lot is in the Phantom zone.
Dan Ruccia 9:07:08 AM
It might! Has anyone tried snorting Ondes Martenot techno dust to see what happens??
Dan Ruccia 9:07:31 AM
(Not willing to be a guinea pig in that experiment...)
Krista (host) 9:07:38 AM
like you could afford that dust anyway
Krista (host) 9:08:01 AM
the inventor died on a moped with his secrets
Dan Ruccia 9:08:01 AM
Surely someone in the chat is friendly with Johnny Greenwood?
Rofflestomp 9:08:17 AM
@David, speaking of dust, do they still spray oil on the dirt roads in Red Bank?
Rofflestomp 9:09:30 AM
Death by Moped? Holy shit, I wanna read that tombstone.
Krista (host) 9:10:01 AM
The Search for the Chosen One
Krista (host) 9:10:03 AM
Over the years, the world’s approximately forty ondists (that’s what specialist players of the instrument are called), who are mostly located in France, Quebec and Japan, have been plagued by the constant need to repair and restore aging instruments. And it has been almost impossible for anyone outside of this circle to buy one secondhand. The seven active Canadian ondists are currently welcoming an upgrade of their instruments, which is being done by Jean Landry, their repairman for twenty-five
Krista (host) 9:10:30 AM
Jean Landry, their repairman for twenty-five years, who himself is currently looking for a successor to keep servicing the instruments
Dan Ruccia 9:12:19 AM
Apparently there's a Quebequois documentary about the instrument called Wavemakers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavemakers
Dan Ruccia 9:12:59 AM
Which is apparently on Amazon Prime!
Rofflestomp 9:13:45 AM
It appears we've come a long way from just making fire.
Krista (host) 9:14:10 AM
“Petites Ondes” is the world’s first iPad application to reproduce the sound of the Martenot. “You can play it casually during a break for coffee,” reads the description of the Japanese-designed app.
Krista (host) 9:14:43 AM
I love the idea of sitting in the break room playing this "casually". Has anyone EVER played this thing "casually"
Dan Ruccia 9:17:10 AM
Only if you're wearing some stylish outfit out of a New Wave film
Lee Chandler 9:18:22 AM
@Krista - Ha! As a lifelong birder, I could see Crows behind that (I was so close to posting that earlier!).
Krista (host) 9:19:02 AM
the medical records department I worked in was in a basement tunnel with pretty weird acoustics, so perhaps that would have been the perfect place
Brian D 9:22:36 AM
On a related note ( that can change wildly in pitch and volume with the swipe of a finger) I like my "Leon" app for the Android. A Theramin app avail in the Google play store.
Rofflestomp 9:22:52 AM
When your office is in the sub-basement, you actually have a very important mission critical job.
Krista (host) 9:24:07 AM
The tunnel system in Minneapolis is vast
Rofflestomp 9:24:20 AM
A Theramin app? Get outta town! That's cool AF!
Brian D 9:28:39 AM
Ya just slide your finger on the screen. Rectangle map of screen layout has the note increase/decrease in pitch on 1 axis and increase/decrease in volume on the other. But it is quick touch responsive and sounds really cool when you cram all fingers on the screen and just drum them all over. Sounds like 'cool dated 80s computer sound effects ' when you do that.
Brian D 9:30:28 AM
The one finger at a time approach has the basic Theramin ghostly sound or 'Greg Brady in the attic UFO kazoo sound ' take yer pick
Rofflestomp 9:30:52 AM
Sweet! I see good times ahead for holiday dinners. :)
Brian D 9:33:06 AM
Exactly. Dogs n cats n little kids have fun with it. Hide the phone between legs at the table and engage the Theramin app once in a while. Look around.... what is that sound...
Moth Sabbath 9:33:45 AM
Omg Nihiloxica -- LOVE this band
Krista (host) 9:34:25 AM
agree, Moth Sabbath. They're incredible. Been following them since Nyege Nyege tapes released them
Moth Sabbath 9:34:55 AM
Krista that first Nihiloxica album/tape is amazeballs
Krista (host) 9:35:15 AM
some people employ whoopie cushions but for the discerning WPRB listener, why not prank others using a digi-theremin
Brian D 9:35:31 AM
I just received a work email from someone in Japan and the characters of their name look like 2 diff attempts at the keystroke smiley face (quote marks and slashes etc)
Brian D 9:35:59 AM
"/
Brian D 9:36:41 AM
But much better... the angles and slight curves make them more expressive
Krista (host) 9:45:34 AM
I feel like Christine deserves a personal emoji
TAndy 9:47:08 AM
This set is so good.
Krista (host) 9:51:26 AM
thanks, TAndy
Dan Ruccia 9:52:10 AM
Digging this Lido Pimienta!
TAndy 9:52:47 AM
Thanks so much for the music this morning!
Krista (host) 9:53:04 AM
the original is great, too but this remix is something special
Rofflestomp 9:53:17 AM
Nice sets Krista. Thanks.
Christine 𓅓 9:54:14 AM
Thanks, Krista! You always enrich our respective habitats.
Krista (host) 9:57:25 AM
that's such a great thought to think about waking up and thinking about how much love you get
Lee Chandler 9:59:15 AM
Thanks Krista!
Krista (host) 10:00:01 AM
thank you to all the listeners, your open minds are so wonderful!
