They were so named because they were really nocturnal and would run around the house at night and mischievously play tricks and leave surprises for us to find in the morning. 🐁

But I'm not clear on the outdated navigational charts: Did the shoal reach further into Lake Superior than noted, and the ship ran into it?

The great lakes scare me. I was on the waterfront in Chicago once, and it felt so off putting that such a massive body of water, with its own waves and climate, can exist in a giant slab of land. Even from an airplane I couldn't see from the south tip to land on the north. Scary

Lake Superior on the Wisconsin side is where I went skinny dipping in the night in June. So cold your limbs go numb.

@ Krista (host) An engineer and fellow folk musician related to me an intriguing theory on the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking: High, powerful waves could be capable of lifting a ship even as large & heavily loaded. If such waves lifted the bow & stern simultaneously, the heavy central section could come out of the water and loose its vital buoyant support - causing the fatal structural failure you referenced. Two of the 35 ft rouge "3 Sisters" waves sighted that night could have done this.

There are a couple of guys who live along a town at Lake S who go surfing even in the dead of winter. The ice beard surfers, Vice did a video about them. They've saved lives on the lake too, from people who went out and got stuck.

Strange to think that the super huge cargo ships can get pummeled by waves. And the big metal cargo containers are just stacked (No use trying to strap them or secure them... might as well use dental floss .. it wouldn't matter with that weight/ mass). And sometimes... whoops... containers just fall off ships in heavy waters. Crazy story about a shipment of lost Legos off coast of UK years ago. Funny how the containers are stacked like Legos!
