All 90s Independent 7"s

6362cb226a140.jpg

Wednesday night pitcrew please rise! And in the words of my man Crosley Bendix, "why don't you just put down that fanzine, turn off that TV, take off all your silly clothes and... think this over?"

Tonight (for a change), we gather here for a purpose. I've been spinning a freeform mix of all 7" singles over the course of the last two shows, but tonight, we narrow the focus to zero in on the 1990s punk, DIY, independent, and experimental scene -- a scene which was just lousy with 7" singles and which I acquired gazillions of as a Gen-Xer who spent most of the 1990s haunting gigs and hole-in-the-wall record shops. However, as I got older and ornery-er, and the specter of (boring) life changes one's 30s tends to usher in, I eventually decided that a ton of that music had aged badly and I wanted it out of my house. So I got rid of it -- some of it I sold, some of it I gave away (at least a car trunk's full of it to the kids who hosted the legendary Unaccompanied Minors show on WPRB circa 2000), and some of it was probably skimmed by unscrupulous roommates, of which I had plenty on my path from being the longhaired, cig-huffing slacker-of-yore, to the refined, cultured, and urbane Gentleman Of a Certain Age that graces your airwaves this evening.

But some of those singles I kept. And tonight, I will play 7" selections from that era and from those scenes from all the stuff that narrowly escaped the axe of vengeance some of us call Getting Old And Not Giving A Shit Anymore. BY NO MEANS is this meant to be a comprehensive or academic overview of the 1990s indie / punk singles scene. That horse has been beaten to death (partially by me, back in another life). Instead, tonight aims to be an intensely personal review of music I was likely tempted to jettison at some point, but decided to hang on to for some profound reason or another.

Above all else, don't forget to support freeform radio! Our Fall Fundraiser is still cranking away in the background, so if you feel like validating our weirdo tendencies, the best way to do so is by visiting our pledge site and making a donation. Thank you!

Nice...know I gotta stack of Childish 7" in my Keeper Box of 100 Singles.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:14:21 PM
Is that 100 Childish singles? Because that it totally possible.
jimboo 8:14:52 PM
Oh no...less than 5?
Mike Lupica (host) 8:16:42 PM
I know a guy who claimed to have collected every single Billy Childish recording ever released. He was... sort of a broken and sad man.
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 8:17:32 PM
Did he live in a small house made out of those records?
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 8:18:05 PM

Donating Supporting Monthly 8:18:24 PM

Ambrose Hughes 8:20:24 PM
Billy Childish is a tireless artist, I think he's put out 4 Albums this year ...so far as The William Loveday Intention!
jimboo 8:20:33 PM
The Vinyl Shack of Childish had no utilities whatsoever.
Commie "Feeble Drive Time" Francis 8:20:56 PM
Jerry from Jerry's records in Pittsburgh told me he out records inside his walls for insulation.

Mike Lupica (host) 8:22:05 PM
Nice, Marcus! Never saw them, but their records are great. Opening for PJ seems like a good fit.

bill and i are placing bets on which bands get played in the abc set
Teresa Yes I Did!nate 8:48:34 PM
Well HELLO fellows of the Pit Crew! I have a (hopefully not too obnoxious) request -- and ONLY if you've already selected it out of your 7" collection and were gonna anyway -- um... do you have anything from small NYC hardcore label 'Wreck-Age'? Yuppicide was one of their bands...
Commie "Feeble Drive Time" Francis 8:48:49 PM
also andrew that is wild that you were at that (i wasn't!)
Commie "Feeble Drive Time" Francis 8:49:01 PM
yuppicide!!!!!!!!!
Mike Lupica (host) 8:49:30 PM
Oh Teresa! I got rid of my Yuppicide 45 years ago (Stupid Mike! Stupid Mike!) but the ABC hardcore-heavy set is coming up next, so I hope you will hear something adjacent that you will dig!
Rofflestomp (Sonar Donor) 8:50:04 PM
@Commie, yea, funny yuppie cannibals for sure.
Andrew Gruen 8:50:11 PM
I thought the R.I.P. show was 1990 but some memories are fuzzier than others! wasnt it a matinee?
Mike Lupica (host) 8:50:45 PM
Weren't they all matinees? I don't think I ever went to a nighttime show there. And if there's one thing I love, it's goin' to the hardcore show and gettin' to bed on tim!

I hold the wonderful couple who ran Wreck-Age personally responsible for Rob and I reproducing. When she was just the newest of newborns, we had the pleasure of meeting her and our biological clocks started ticking like crazy. And now she's turning 30! Anyway -- I went to at least a handful of those ABC No Rio/CBGB all-ages matinee shows so I'm SUPER-PSYCHED to hear your selections from way back when!

Jimboo, that's still my fave thing they ever did. I think they got kinda big for a while, right?
Mike Lupica (host) 8:57:06 PM

i never had a band stay at my parents house but i tried to book a show for harriet the spy and they would have stayed at my mom's. i couldn't make the show happen but i did meet my husband trying to network to someone who could help me figure out how to book it

My parents were very skeptical of bands staying with them because of "the rock & roll lifestyle" but I talked them into a band staying with us who turned out to be a bunch of British actuaries and barristers. The floodgates opened!
Commie "Feeble Drive Time" Francis 9:25:06 PM
my mom was concerned that harriet the spy would use too much water

25-30 years down the line my parents still ask me about various bands that slept in their home. Some have become their friends too!

Mike Lupica (host) 10:24:25 PM
There use to be a band from Princeton called the Pulaski Skyway Kids. I don't think they had any songs, but they did have t-shirts, one of which was given to me by their bass player.
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 10:25:20 PM

jimboo 10:26:01 PM
Nice recording job on this Nuisance track!
Mike Lupica (host) 10:27:54 PM
There is a very particular sound to those cheap-ass 90s punk records. Drums sound like someone whacking a suitcase with a stick.
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 10:28:32 PM
A suitcase full of cash? :)
Mike Lupica (host) 10:28:37 PM
But I do love Nuisance. Someone from that band Comets on Fire once hit me up online in search of Nuisance deepcuts because he found them on one of my old playlists.
