Here we go y'all. You ready for a lunchtime dance party??
Lee Chandler 12:03:13 PM
Off to a good start!
Mok - Don't Run 12:17:29 PM
i wasnt aware of the Jazz Disco genre. Very cool
Dan Ruccia (host) 12:18:59 PM
It's a totally silly and fun little corner of the jazz/fusion scene. A lot of it ends up being folks chasing fads, but some of it is legit fantastic
Mok - Don't Run 12:23:42 PM
heh definitely getting the silly part
Lee Chandler 12:28:20 PM
My brain always visualizes grainey film clips with a blip, of people in vertical striped pants, wearing brown leather belted jackets, some jaunty round soft shaped hat, walking on a city sidewalk & asking everyone they see, "Can you dig it?"
Dan Ruccia (host) 12:31:02 PM
This song feels like the soundtrack for that montage, Lee
gboss 12:39:44 PM
Hi Dan, just tuning in now... I have some trust but remain skeptical. This should be an interesting ride
Dan Ruccia (host) 12:40:40 PM
Definitely the right attitude, gboss. That's how I started in researching this show. But I think I've managed to cut out all the chaff
Brian 'D' For Donor 12:48:57 PM
Fun show! Papa John Creach's lp "Filthy!" almost fits.. a little basic ... not quite jazz. Pre dates the main disco years but has a similar vibe
Brian 'D' For Donor 12:49:52 PM
Oooo this Lonnie L S is a cop car chase through San Francisco!
Dan Ruccia (host) 12:50:29 PM
Yeah, there's so much fun stuff that's just ever so slightly off to the side of disco (i.e. a little too "conventionally" funky or whatever). I'm gonna probably work those in to future shows
Lee Chandler 12:51:49 PM
It's not a genre I've been into enough to actively pursue, but I appreciate it & never turn it off when I hear it.
Dan Ruccia (host) 12:54:48 PM
This one is definitely not disco, but it's too good/terrible/incredible to pass up
Lee Chandler 12:56:15 PM
Anything that starts with Vibra....has my ttn.
Daniel 12:57:55 PM
yea this one is a hit
Dan Ruccia (host) 12:59:38 PM
I have to wonder what 76-year-old Lionel was thinking as he recorded this
Dan Ruccia (host) 1:00:06 PM
It's kinda like hearing Louis Armstrong doing "The Creator Has a Master Plan"
Brian 'D' For Donor 1:08:08 PM
Hee this one sounds like a loop
Brian 'D' For Donor 1:09:34 PM
I think i saw Lionel Hampton perform on 1 of the big late night tv shows when he was about 90 years old
Krista 1:10:33 PM
Perfect music for the warm weather and the sofrito we are eating
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 1:16:32 PM
This is a Quality Concept!
Dan Ruccia (host) 1:21:43 PM
The thing I realized in prepping for this show is that Ornette's band was basically taking what Captain Beefheart was doing with rhythm and groove and making jazz out of it
Andrew Butler 1:24:49 PM
Can you play ‘Huevos’ by Tim Berne off Science Friction?
Brian 'D' For Donor 1:28:07 PM
Love that Prime Time band! Way to go Ornette doing it his way
Andrew Butler 1:28:21 PM
Fantastic show as always
Dan Ruccia (host) 1:28:27 PM
@Andrew: Totally. It'll in pretty well with this set!
Dan Ruccia (host) 1:30:05 PM
Also, I'm putting out the call for someone, somewhere to reissue this Alfonia Tims album! It came out on cassette on ROIR in 1982 has essentially disappeared beyond that. You can hear it all here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_52nvpx1Sk
Brian 'D' For Donor 1:33:13 PM
Ornette was on Saturday Night Live in 1979 around same time that Of Human Feelings was recorded but that lp wasn't realeased until 82. I guess Body Meta was the most current lp at the time of the SNL appearance
Dan Ruccia (host) 1:33:39 PM
That SNL recording is sooooo good
Andrew Butler 1:35:27 PM
Cool, thought it was close!
Brian 'D' For Donor 1:35:36 PM
Ahh looks like they performed the piece Times Square on SNL which is on Of Human Feelings
Brian 'D' For Donor 1:37:05 PM
Was hoping JBU showed up!
Dan Ruccia (host) 1:38:56 PM
Oh yeah, couldn't skip him!
gboss 1:52:31 PM
I'm definitely going to check out the Ornette on SNL....
Dan Ruccia (host) 2:14:47 PM
Fun fact I just learned: one of the guitarists on this Herbie song is Ray Parker, Jr.
Jon "pledge.wprb.com" Solomon 2:17:26 PM
Dancing up a storm while unloading the dishwasher.
Mok - Don't Run 2:19:26 PM
im torn between doing the hustle and the boogie
Lee Chandler 2:21:39 PM
Whatever you do....dress well & do it with style.
Brian 'D' For Donor 2:33:57 PM
Even Mr Brown (James) did it with "Everybody's Doin' the Hustle & Dead on the Double Bump". Might not fall into the " succeeded" category
Christopher Torak 2:54:32 PM
I had to drive up and down 76 to get to various appointments today. Gorgeous autumn foliage, lush disco-jazz trompibulations all afternoon. Bless that Cephalopod-chthonic harmelodic supersonic Funk! 🐙🎶
gboss 2:54:40 PM
Thanks, Dan!
Dan Ruccia (host) 2:57:49 PM
Glad to make a good driving soundtrack, Christopher!
Dan Ruccia (host) 2:58:04 PM
Thanks for listening everyone! Hope you had as much fun with this as I did!
