I tuned into War of the Worlds after it began, so I don't know if it preserved H.G. Wells' original opening. But Wells - a great reformer who knew well what happens when a culture with superior weapon technology invades new lands - has his narrating main character remind the readers that Europeans landed in Pacific islands and often quickly wiped out the indigenous peoples. So, he asks, who are we humans to complain if the Martians did not treat us with tender mercies?
