Wednesday Night Pitcrew, please rise!
And go sift through the debris field you call a home and get your wallets out because it's fundraising time here at WPRB! To tempt your better judgement, we've got a pile of 7" singles racked up for you here in the Starlite Lounge tonight. Peep the ever-changing lineup of picture sleeves (even the boring/plain ones) with the webcam link, while also getting a glimpse (at a new angle!) of the proceedings here in the studio tonight. It's a veritable love-fest of love crackles!

Credit card pledges as low as $10/month are the BEST way to support independent, freeform programming originating from here in the wilds of the Jersey Badlands, so as we stumble through the bins tonight, please hit up our secure pledge site when you hear that one 45 that just sends you over the moon and back. You'll be rewarded with the new WPRB t-shirt, sticker, and bottle opener, PLUS, you'll be in line to automatically receive every piece of new WPRB merch we roll out during future fundraisers. In other words, we'll charge your credit card at your preferred amount every month until you tell us to stop. I call it the "set it and forget it" model for keeping independent radio alive in the 21st century. (Though we also welcome one-time pledges if that's more your speed.)

It's been a crazy three years of pandemic tymez, and these weekly hangs in the Starlite Lounge have been a huge part of what's made it all bearable for me. If you feel the same way, I hope I'll be hearing from you tonight. Thank you!

How about those wax-wrecking players that handle a whole stack of LPs or singles and drop them automatically? LOVE.
Brian 'D' For Donor 8:21:54 PM
I tried that with a hotel fan recently. Stood on bed, tried to "rev it up real fast like pushing a stalled car down the hill maybe this will make the fan kick into gear but..." nope

There was a fake Zombies in the early / mid 1980s playing the club / dive bar circuit. No original members. They tried to pretend some bass or guitar player (with a similar name) was a former drummer but they just "moved him up front so the audience could see him yeah..". A local music writer from the Bucks Co paper helped to warn others and bring down the scam. I think it may have been related to the same company that booked the fake Deep Purple
Richard Lyons (1) 8:53:04 PM
Great Show, Mike! Arrested developement!

Isn't Fake Deep Purple just Blackmore's Knight?
Brian 'D' For Donor 8:55:48 PM
Ha! That was much better than this 80s travesty believe it or not. It had Rod Evans on vocals but it was totally illegal to use the name. The crowds expected a reunion with Ritchie etc but nope (pre internet era, duped fans etc)

one of my old bands was upstairs at John & Peter's in New Hope "getting ready" to go on circa 2000-2001. We missed a strange wizard like long curly haired guy and his wife who ducked in to see if any jamming w/the band was a possibility maybe maybe... he got some stares I heard... and then... they went down the street to Martine's and ... ended up jamming all night. Just set up a little amp and away he went. (psst it was Ritchie Blackmore, not a fake). Oh well.
Brian 'D' For Donor 9:00:47 PM
This Frankie track is FIRE!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:01:12 PM
Flipside of "Cookin'" -- Instant jukebox classic!
David Shortell 9:01:17 PM
Yes, Mike. There are two different groups claiming the Sham 69 name now. One features Pursey, Parsons and Tregunna from the classic line-up; but the group that played the Brighton had NO classic members! Their only claim to authenticity is a guitarist who was with the band in their early pre-recording days.
Brian 'D' For Donor 9:02:13 PM
"all I wanna do is go to the Ren Faire and eat a giant turkey leg right now" hahahahahahah... totally. The solo for "Since You Been Gone" (an I don't care I ain't guilty pleasure).

"I didn't think he was gonna do 'Moon River' and then, wham, second encore!" -Nelson Muntz hahahahha nice! I thought of that as soon as I heard Andy W as well. Brought tears to Nelson's eyes. Heart o stone melted....
Mike Lupica (host) 9:51:53 PM
If you've never seen the video for this Pete Drake song... definitely make it a point.

This is a WPRB moment. Never would have known about this song if not for WPRB
Mike Lupica (host) 9:56:35 PM
OK, I did pay more than a dollar for this one.
Brian 'D' For Donor 9:58:34 PM
Must have been a reissue in the 00s. WPRB was playing it a bunch for a couple weeks there. Maybe it was a 45 tho and several djs were just really into it. I know I heard it first in the 00s here
sean burns 9:58:52 PM
I never knew that scritti politti was so catchy
Mike Lupica (host) 9:59:03 PM
There was definitely an SP re-up that happened around then, yeah.
Brian 'D' For Donor 9:59:12 PM
It is such a crazy well put together layer of guitar and bass.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:59:47 PM
And an amazing story behind how they pressed/packaged it. It's covered in that Rough Trade documentary from 10-15 years ago. Really brilliant.
Brian 'D' For Donor 9:59:58 PM
Wow thanks for playing that. I often think of this song when it comes to classic prb. Have not heard it in ages

Philadelphia's own Calvin shenkel brought Frank Zappa to see Alice Cooper which resulted in Frank producing their first album pretties for You
David Shortell 10:09:48 PM
Cooper sang that on the Tonight Show in 1997 without changing the words. I recall him saying to Jay Leno afterwards “It wouldn’t sound right if I sang ‘I’m 49 and I don’t know what I want’”.

Funny thing about titles, proper names, all caps etc in Spanish, they sometimes eliminate the accent mark. The word "número" is really NOO-meh-roe. But the record company's name eliminates that accent so it makes it confusing. But it should be NOO-meh-roe

I remember going to see the Gories at the Bank in the summer of ‘93. It was just on a whim, because the Flipper/Dwarves show at the Grand (formerly the Cat Club) ended early. I only found out much later that it was the Gories’ farewell show (though they reformed years later). Opening for the Gories was Lorette Velvette & Otha Turner's Rising Star Fife & Drum Band. Othar was 90 at the time. He died in 2003.
Matt Budd 10:35:57 PM
