Hi it's me Commie Francis here with more lefty music as I try my best to fill the shoes of the legendary John Weingart! As usual I'm going with what I know, lefty folk music about land access and ownership, the common treasury, the commons, collectivist movements of 17th century Britain ET CETERA. With some overlap into punk but NOT FOLK-PUNK.

@ Commie Francis (host) Great themes tonight with The Diggers and the 1932 Mass Trepass of Kinder Scout protest. And how wonderful to hear Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger in powerfully joyous protest voice on "Hey Ho! Cook and Rowe!"

Makes me want to go back and watch Detectorists again ! For the 3rd time. The characters would not have been able to do their detectoring if not for those actions

@ Commie Francis (host) Thanks for the historical background on the 1930s Mass Trepass protests in England. It's significant that -- by contrast -- Scotland does not have a law of trespass. As long as you close gates behind you (especially on farms!), don't engage in any destruction or set up living structures ... ramble on! So the protesters in England had a precedent just to the north.

@Richard: it’s like that in Switzerland, too. If the gate is open, leave it open. If it’s closed, close it behind you. Walk on through.

Richard Thompson did this song a few times during his 2020 Fall / Winter live stream concerts. Watched each one with big eyes and ears. This was a highlight.

YES! He has a way with the songs of the last 1000 years ha. He did a fun jig style arrangement of the Waitresses "Christmas Wrapping" on his December livestream that year. Cutty Wren also.

one of my more fun shows was a boxing day show and i played some version or other of it. last time i covered for john i played lankum's super sad version from the perspective of the wren
