When I interviewed at an English dept none of em knew what "grit lit" was. I was amazed. (It's the successor to Southern gothic.) Hiring folk like juicy, interesting stuff to make learn about you. Def put it in.

I would just mention that you have hosted a radio show on WPRB for about 10 years, that would be enough. Speaks to self-motivation and self-starter yada, yada resume stuff. If they ask in an interview explain more then. IMHO

Lots of good advice/comments/ I "third" Dave's advice about not needing to specify the type of music, and second Dan's comment about old (and not so old) curmudgeons.There can be some priggish and judgmental personalities, as you are aware, in academia (as a child I believed that education was ennobling. Right!). Even if someone isn't that old and used to listen to music like this when they were younger, they could have "grown" become rather intolerant.

thanks Vintasonic and Mike, those are all great tips, I agree about not getting into the specifics of the music, just the emphasis on public service and hte public history aspects (in the case of Anatolian Hour)

Plus, it helps your weeding out process as well. If someone doesn't find that intriguing, maybe you don't want to work there. Interviews are a two way street

Agreed. I've heard stories where people didn't get jobs because they didn't want "someone like that" in their department (and the "like that" could be very petty).

One of my students last year mentioned to the guy whose office is next to mine that I like Black Flag. She told me he groaned, "That explains it."

my first choice university has a radio station very similar to WPRB, so that's potentially exciting (of course not relevant to whether I get the job, but still something positive)

I played Amoeba before starting a 9 AM lecture earlier in September (both the class and I needed to wake up).

I played a Made Out of Babies song and Deftones song in class, both about abusive relationships, to show it from diff POVs (male/female), rather than just "cancel the abuser and support the innocent victim" mentality
