Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:04:34 PM
Need to dry out in the desert
Richard Lyons (1) 3:04:41 PM
vroooom
Dan Ruccia 3:04:47 PM
Doom baton passed
Captain Ahab (host) 3:04:59 PM
I spied that Frayle tune!
Captain Ahab (host) 3:05:04 PM
I'm playing them too lol
Richard Lyons (1) 3:05:13 PM
Good show, Dan!
Dan Ruccia 3:05:17 PM
lol!
Dan Ruccia 3:05:38 PM
Great album. I kinda love the thread of metal that's basically Soundgarden but darker
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:08:20 PM
I've been listening to Sabbath's live vs studio versions of Sweet Leaf-- so slowed-down and heavy live
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:08:52 PM
Destroy the voice
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:11:26 PM
Yer overthinkin it, Ahab. Just talk about it. Could be key to open doors. Tell em about the rabbitholes & research done for Anatolian Hour.
Captain Ahab (host) 3:11:40 PM
That's definitely going in there!
Dan Ruccia 3:12:59 PM
"exploring a number of slower, heavier metal subgenres"
Captain Ahab (host) 3:13:15 PM
that's a good way of putting it, thanks Dan!
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:13:17 PM
It shows yer a holistic person, and pot/pot music aint a stigma anymore. You may have to explain the music genres to hiring folk.
Captain Ahab (host) 3:13:24 PM
You're probably the expert on exactly this question lol
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 3:14:19 PM
The type of music need not be specified. Stress rather it is a voluntary task, for which you have demonstrated reliability and surprising adaptability in multiple countries.
Captain Ahab (host) 3:14:43 PM
good points
Dan Ruccia 3:14:54 PM
Actually never dabbled in the academic job market, but I've definitely been around the periphery of the academy forever
Captain Ahab (host) 3:15:09 PM
I am copying these comments into my notes file, thanks team
Dan Ruccia 3:15:12 PM
Seconding Dave's points
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:15:13 PM
When I interviewed at an English dept none of em knew what "grit lit" was. I was amazed. (It's the successor to Southern gothic.) Hiring folk like juicy, interesting stuff to make learn about you. Def put it in.
Dan Ruccia 3:16:26 PM
What kinds of departments are you looking for? Matt's points are good. I'm just thinking about the quantum of crusty old curmudgeonly gatekeeping dudes you're going to have to deal with....
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:16:55 PM
Dont try to please Gen X or Boomer sensibilities. Fuck them. (I'm gen X.) You can only be yerself, and dubya prb is a big part of that.
Captain Ahab (host) 3:17:08 PM
I'll probably only apply to History departments, so fairly traditional
Bud Burroughs 3:17:33 PM
Just tell them that you make large numbers of people say "Yes, this rocks!!" on a weekly basis.
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:17:54 PM
Lol Bud ✊
Captain Ahab (host) 3:17:56 PM
"People bang their hands and throw goats when they hear the music I play"
Bud Burroughs 3:18:23 PM
Even better!
Dan Ruccia 3:18:27 PM
"Music that channels the esoteric power of various pagan rites and rituals"
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:19:23 PM
Just show you can straddle the classic/status quo and also have a knack for cutting edge music and the history of Turkish musical development.
Brian D 3:20:27 PM
Periphery of academia... I'm picturing a Sarlacc Pit but with nice grassy lawns/ malls & old buildings surrounding.
Dan Ruccia 3:20:58 PM
LOL
Dan Ruccia 3:21:10 PM
you're not wrong, Brian
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:21:18 PM
Advance a theory that Turkish music is a proto influence on doom metal. It's intriguing. They should remember that after interview is done. Be your sweet self but be confident, fiery.
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:21:50 PM
Brian D lol. It's a Sarlaac Pit indeed.
Captain Ahab (host) 3:22:52 PM
hahaha Matt I should, thankfully at this stage I just need a sentence or two about its relevance to my interest in public history/community engagement, I can develop those theories more if I get to the interview stage lol
Brian D 3:22:59 PM
I have not been back to ye olde college town in about 30 yrs. Must be tons of changes
Captain Ahab (host) 3:23:40 PM
not sure what it was like in your time but definitely lots has changed in the past 12
Captain Ahab (host) 3:23:54 PM
the new Wawa is like a modern art museum lol
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:24:13 PM
Shit has changed radically in the last 30 years in academia
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:24:59 PM
Ahab will do great, please all send her good metta/thoughts and thrown goats
Captain Ahab (host) 3:25:55 PM
thanks team, this fall is like a soft launch for me, ive got another year of wiggle room/cushion if things don't work out so i'm feeling pretty relaxed
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:26:24 PM
"where the parasites all feed" lyric IS ACADEMIA
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:27:28 PM
I would, as a student back in the day, have loved a doom metal history prof
Captain Ahab (host) 3:30:05 PM
"extra credit if you pledge to WPRB's membership drive"
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:30:36 PM
Start each class with a Bongzilla song
Captain Ahab (host) 3:30:47 PM
70 minutes later....whelp!
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:31:24 PM
"prof Ahab, it sounds like a goblin singing"
Captain Ahab (host) 3:32:25 PM
"10 points goes to house...slytherin?"
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:34:03 PM
The scene in The Runaways where their manager preps them for playing live is a great example of toughening up for the job search. He threw dogshit at them while they played.
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:34:48 PM
Meanwhile, Jewel was hit in the bewb with a frisbee and huffed offstage in a hissy
vintasonic 3:35:33 PM
I would just mention that you have hosted a radio show on WPRB for about 10 years, that would be enough. Speaks to self-motivation and self-starter yada, yada resume stuff. If they ask in an interview explain more then. IMHO
Mike Tropiano 3:35:48 PM
Lots of good advice/comments/ I "third" Dave's advice about not needing to specify the type of music, and second Dan's comment about old (and not so old) curmudgeons. There can be some priggish and judgmental personalities, as you are aware, in academia (as a child I believed that education was ennobling. Right!). Even if someone isn't that old and used to listen to music like this when they were younger, they could have "grown" become rather intolerant.
Mike Tropiano 3:36:24 PM
Academic job = service, scholarship and teaching
C🎃lin 3:37:14 PM
that spelling of wizzerd rules
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:37:32 PM
Lol Colin
Mike Tropiano 3:37:33 PM
I could see discussing your radio work in the context of the latter two, and perhaps even the first, if you'd get involved with media at a university.
C🎃lin 3:37:57 PM
ave ya erd wizzerd?
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:38:42 PM
I'm a wizard, mind you. - Conan the Barb
Captain Ahab (host) 3:39:16 PM
thanks Vintasonic and Mike, those are all great tips, I agree about not getting into the specifics of the music, just the emphasis on public service and hte public history aspects (in the case of Anatolian Hour)
Mike Tropiano 3:40:04 PM
Exactly. You could discuss course you might like to develop.
Mike Tropiano 3:40:42 PM
Probably not in a cover letter but somewher along the interview process.
vintasonic 3:40:50 PM
Plus, it helps your weeding out process as well. If someone doesn't find that intriguing, maybe you don't want to work there. Interviews are a two way street
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:41:56 PM
The Process of Weeding Out - Black Flag
Mike Tropiano 3:42:22 PM
Agreed. I've heard stories where people didn't get jobs because they didn't want "someone like that" in their department (and the "like that" could be very petty).
Mike Tropiano 3:43:45 PM
One of my students last year mentioned to the guy whose office is next to mine that I like Black Flag. She told me he groaned, "That explains it."
Captain Ahab (host) 3:43:58 PM
my first choice university has a radio station very similar to WPRB, so that's potentially exciting (of course not relevant to whether I get the job, but still something positive)
Captain Ahab (host) 3:44:07 PM
LOL MIKE
Captain Ahab (host) 3:44:10 PM
oh man
Mike Tropiano 3:44:23 PM
Tells you that at least there are like minds there.
Mike Tropiano 3:44:37 PM
I'm excited for you!
Mike Tropiano 3:45:32 PM
And that guy is in his early thirties!
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:48:00 PM
https://bohemian.com/punkademics-1/ interesting article about punks in academia from 2007
Captain Ahab (host) 3:48:32 PM
now I have to ask, do you listen to your music with headphones or speakers lol. might explain his reaction
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:50:14 PM
doom wop
Mike Tropiano 3:50:26 PM
I think it, last Fall, when I'd listen to Harrison's show to help me get psyched for an evening class, that annoyed him. Wasn't using earphones.
Mike Tropiano 3:51:21 PM
I do try not to make it loud (er, not too loud).
Mike Tropiano 3:51:49 PM
Thanks for the article. The title certainly describes me.
Captain Ahab (host) 3:51:49 PM
oh snap yeah Harrison's show was mega haha
Captain Ahab (host) 3:52:06 PM
yeah thanks Matt, got it bookmarked
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:52:13 PM
Kyuss has a song called Acidize the Moose er something
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:53:15 PM
Ahab have you heard Ice Dragon? Amazeballs Ozzy-ian vox https://icedragon.bandcamp.com/album/a-beacon-on-the-barrow
Mike Tropiano 3:53:33 PM
I played Amoeba before starting a 9 AM lecture earlier in September (both the class and I needed to wake up).
Captain Ahab (host) 3:53:41 PM
I love Ice Dragon, that album in particular
Captain Ahab (host) 3:53:48 PM
sad that I never caught them in Boston
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 3:57:39 PM
I played a Made Out of Babies song and Deftones song in class, both about abusive relationships, to show it from diff POVs (male/female), rather than just "cancel the abuser and support the innocent victim" mentality
Mike Tropiano 4:03:35 PM
That's appropriate pedagogic use. Most of my class was bio majors, so I just wanted something loud that ham some proximity to biology.
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 4:04:37 PM
Come on down to the quarantine dance
Mike Tropiano 4:05:13 PM
Here's something I have often shown (at some point early in a semester) to the freshman year chem classes.

Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 4:15:45 PM

Ambrose Hughes 4:17:53 PM
Hello Captain Ahab!
Captain Ahab (host) 4:18:14 PM
hi Ambrose!
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 4:19:33 PM
I saw All Them Witches in Boston but shoulda paid better attention, they had the tough job of opening for Mastodon & Primus
Captain Ahab (host) 4:20:20 PM
aah that is tough
Matt-ain Mountain of XyloPrawn Shells 4:20:23 PM
And I'd been overserved edibles & booze
Brian D 4:20:47 PM
