Broken Baby is based in LA. and is the musical brainchild of former Ohio all-state high jump champion and college athlete Amber Bollinger and veteran indie rocker/producer Alex Dezen (main songwriter and front man of The Damnwells). As a working actor in Hollywood for years, Bollinger experienced seemingly unending sexual harassment and misogyny. If you follow the four-year-old band’s history, it’s clear that it was formed as a vehicle for Bollinger, both as a writer and performer, to channel her rage.

Richard from Rocky Hill 12:46:05 PM
@ Esoterica (host) Great show, as always! You may know, there was a movie inspiration for Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day." In the classic 1956 western The Searchers, John Wayne's character uses that laconic and sarcastic rejoinder to a number of foolish comments and suggestions. Buddy and his bandmates started using "That'll be the day ..." on similar occasions -- and soon they wrote it into a song.
Esoterica (host) 12:46:27 PM
oh i love that. hi, richard!

Speaking of the leads ... As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired. Get the picture? You laughing now? You got leads. Mitch and Murray paid good money to get their names to sell them. You can't close the leads you're given, then you can't close shtt! You ARE shtt! Hit the bricks, pal, and beat it 'cause you are going OUT!

You wanna talk about the Generation Gap? My big brother told me that at the time the 1978 movie starring Gary Busey came out, our parents did not know who Buddy Holly was.
David Shortell 1:31:06 PM
The Woodstock documentary would’ve been so much better if it included Creedence Clearwater Revival. They’re not even in the expanded edition on home video!
David Shortell 1:31:43 PM
That “always be closing” scene and its Blake character were created especially for the 1992 film version of the 1984 play “Glengarry Glen Ross”. I wonder if David Mamet now regrets the scene’s casting, after Alec Baldwin has so frequently made fun of Mamet’s hero Donald Trump.

No disrespect intended, but years from now, when someone asks me if I remember where I was when I found out the queen had died, I will look forward to saying: "I was listening to Sweat Loaf by the Butthole Surfers on WPRB."
David Shortell 1:47:48 PM
“Sweat Loaf” was once used in a WPRB station ID. I heard the song many times since its release in the 1980’s, but only found out a decade ago that it’s derived from a Black Sabbath song.
-ᎷяMΔᏞᏨØИᎢΞNᎢ-💀 1:49:00 PM

“Hard Times” was also the name of a New Jersey punk zine that was sold outside City Gardens after its hardcore shows. I’m not sure if it was named after the Dickens novel.

One track that used to get played a lot back in the days of “underground FM” radio was Jerry Garcia’s solo guitar improv “Love Scene” from the soundtrack of Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 film Zabriskie Point. Perhaps a suggestion for a future soundtrack show?
