The MC5 (Motor City Five) formed in Lincoln Park, Michigan in 1964. In 1968, the band relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and following a performance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Elektra Records A&R man Danny Fields signed them to Elektra Records. Their overtly political, anti-establishment stance stymied more widespread acceptance outside of the American Rust Belt and likely played a role in Elektra dropping them in 1969.

LIZBOT zips away into the atmosphere in a spacey tram pod

Chat is archived.
Lizbot (host) 5:00:38 PM
Let's kickstart this holiday weekend!
Brian D 5:02:28 PM
LET ME KICK OUT THE TRAMS MFrs!!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:06 PM
HI BRIAN
Brian D 5:03:35 PM
Out of the corner of the earache my eye
Lizbot (host) 5:03:56 PM
@Brian D - Ha! I named it TRAMS cuz I was in one a day ago in St. Louis - Went up to the top of the Gateway Arch in a space-aged pod tram
Brian D 5:04:25 PM
Watch the space age pod tram cars please....
Rob from Maryland 🌻 🇺🇦 🦀 5:04:50 PM
Hello everyone
Lizbot (host) 5:04:56 PM
oh here we goooo....Ananda!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:01 PM
Hi Rob!
Lizbot (host) 5:06:09 PM
@Brian D - Srsly, you have to watch the SOLID STEEL BAR that will cut off your head if you don't duck down to 4' total height to get in those trams. They even have a sample tram so claustrophobics can try it out before buying a ticket!
DSM 5:06:31 PM
This feels like a 5 o'clock jam for sure!
Lizbot (host) 5:07:00 PM
@Rob In Maryland - How're things there in MD?? I sadly didn't see very many interesting birds during my trip to St. Louis this past week...I took a riverboat on the Mississippi and only saw flies
Lizbot (host) 5:07:03 PM
Hi DSM!
DSM 5:07:28 PM
watch the decapitation bar please
Lizbot (host) 5:07:38 PM
@DSM - For real, I release you into the post-work day with this one
George Korein 5:07:52 PM
Tram! I wish I was your lover

Lizbot (host) 5:11:14 PM
@DSM - Basically. The story goes the dude who designed the Arch trams, Dick Bowser, was only given 3 weeks to do it cuz the powers that be didn't think he could do it. He didn't have a degree or anything. He was only given the chance cuz Eero Saarinen, architect of the arch, requested him, but Saarinen died during the building of the arch.
DSM 5:12:09 PM
Lizbot, what a mess!
Rob from Maryland 🌻 🇺🇦 🦀 5:12:35 PM
@Lizbot, things are going ok. Bummer about your birdless St. Louis. Birding was slow here today and yesterday, sadly.
Lizbot (host) 5:12:42 PM
@George - Haha, I'd like to take one of those tram space pods through Brussells!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:58 PM
@DSM - He pulled it off! It's like half tram half carousel half spaceship! It defies logic, it's 3 halves, that's how odd it is, but it works
George Korein 5:14:42 PM
Never underestimate Bowser's design capabilities.
Lizbot (host) 5:15:08 PM
@Rob from Maryland - Yeah, I mean I really don't remember any birds at all, save a few flying very high up above the river that I really couldn't identify
Lizbot (host) 5:15:34 PM
@George - I'm just gonna assume you mean Bowser from Mario and his sturdy castles
George Korein 5:16:25 PM
according to this, Bowser himself was designed after spicy Korean food https://www.theverge.com/culture/2017/1/17/14296396/bowser-korean-food-koopa-japanese-nintendo-miyamoto
Lizbot (host) 5:17:03 PM
@Brian D - Please stand clear of the closing pods
Lizbot (host) 5:18:09 PM
@George - hmmmmm. Does bare a striking resemblance...
George Korein 5:18:24 PM
the pod is mod
Lizbot (host) 5:18:57 PM
@Rob - No interesting birdage, but I got repeatedly bitten by some odd long fly along the Mississippi I've never seen before. Still have itchy arms
Lizbot (host) 5:19:46 PM
@George - The pod IS mod! Still looks futuristic today, over 50 years after it was built. Not even mid-century retro futurism, but actually futuristic

George Korein 5:20:56 PM
You can't pants me, I'm too advanced, see
Lizbot (host) 5:22:39 PM
@George - Pants-free, not pantsy, so don't get handsy
George Korein 5:22:40 PM
I'm the nanotech pants / that fit any gams / standing in any stance / in any vans or trams
Lizbot (host) 5:23:06 PM
@George - Stop buying pants in a tram down by the river
George Korein 5:23:20 PM
if you don't want my hands handsy, why inform me you are pants-free?
Ossy Hyouka 5:23:59 PM
Evening Liz on this beautiful wilderness sunshine weather
George Korein 5:25:15 PM
To be candid, I'm overpanted, but not underpanted nor underhanded, understand, kid?
Lizbot (host) 5:25:27 PM
Hello Ossy! It's gorgeous out and I hope to laze on the deck this weekend if I don't go down the shore! I hope you're having a great late summer week!
Lizbot (host) 5:27:32 PM
@George - Stop wearing 12 pairs of pants of increasing size simultaneously like some kind of Russian doll. We don't look kindly on that sorta thing here in Tram Land. You don't wanna jam the tram with pants
Lizbot (host) 5:28:20 PM
@George - If you wanna watch pants got tossed around in a carousel-like motion, throw them in the dryer and watch the show
Brian D 5:28:23 PM
Or did you mean Bowser from Sha Na Na tv show era?
Ossy Hyouka 5:28:25 PM
Yes Liz, its a sunshine week! Hope you're going to have a great Labor Day weekend!
Lizbot (host) 5:29:16 PM
@Brian D - haha, I was trying to remember that Bowser! I was JUST watching live videos of Sha Na Na last week. They went HARD!
Lizbot (host) 5:31:20 PM
@Ossy - I plan to live on the deck all weekend with a portable speaker listening to WPRB and possibly grilling things, OR I'm driving down to Cape May to meet up with my parents down there. EITHER way, I'll be on WPRB Labor Day MONDAY for LABORWAVE from 1-3!
Lizbot (host) 5:32:48 PM
@Brian D - I grew up watching the Woodstock doc that seemed to be on PBS constantly and remember Sha Na Na's sped-up punk doo-wop performance well, but damn, looking up some of their other performances - TOTAL PROTO-PUNK
George Korein 5:33:49 PM
If I didn't wear all these pants, the Beatles wouldn't have written that song about me
George Korein 5:33:59 PM
Pants Onion
Lizbot (host) 5:35:06 PM
@George - Pants Onion smells foul. You wanna wash those pants with something a little more floral.
Lizbot (host) 5:35:31 PM
@George - Pants Onion the band, however, is anything but foul
Rob from Maryland 🌻 🇺🇦 🦀 5:36:23 PM
@Lizbot, yikes about the fly
Lizbot (host) 5:37:45 PM
@Rob - Scratching as I read this. Yeah, I was not a fan. They really descended on the hapless passengers as the boat pulled in to the dock. It was dusk, so maybe they're out in droves then. Flies and Barges: A Mississippi River Experience
George Korein 5:38:33 PM
They play matryoSka
Lizbot (host) 5:43:23 PM
I suddenly desperately needed to cough in the last 30 seconds of that mic break, but I powered through, eyes watering. Gonna go drink about a gallon of water now...
Lizbot (host) 5:43:51 PM
@George - HAR HAR HAR
Lizbot (host) 5:49:34 PM
down by the river....in a van, selling pants
Lizbot (host) 5:49:48 PM
and in a tram, selling space-pants
George Korein 5:51:22 PM
Pants with that boss stain... dirty water
DSM 5:52:08 PM
So I finally got around to googling those pods, WOWZA! I actually didn't realize that the arch was hollow and filled with rideable pods and I'm a little frightened and very curious now. Gonna have to read the wiki
Rob from Maryland 🌻 🇺🇦 🦀 5:52:08 PM
FIRE!!!
Lizbot (host) 5:52:22 PM
@George - down by the River, Charles
Lizbot (host) 5:52:49 PM
@Rob - Had to play this one for a manic weekend
Ossy Hyouka 5:53:22 PM
Love that dirty, smelly, murky, swampy, dark water blatant
Ossy Hyouka 5:53:29 PM
Blahaha*
Lizbot (host) 5:53:31 PM
@DSM - Yeah, I never knew until I was planning this trip a couple weeks ago! Would never have guessed!
Lizbot (host) 5:53:53 PM
@Ossy - Throw some dirty water on this fire!
George Korein 5:55:33 PM
oooh yeah
George Korein 5:55:50 PM
Raise the hoof
Lizbot (host) 5:56:23 PM
@George - Don't scare Paddy O'Reilly's dad
Lizbot (host) 5:56:57 PM
Raise the hoof and ride straight to the roof.
George Korein 5:57:11 PM
Chrome Hoof is a dear hoof
Lizbot (host) 5:57:39 PM
@George - tis true
Lizbot (host) 5:58:17 PM
Which reminds me - I need everyone here to know that the St. Louis City Museum (misnomer) is the most incredible museum I've ever seen and words don't really do it justice, but just GO if you're ever in St. Louis
George Korein 5:58:46 PM
YES
George Korein 5:58:50 PM
INDEED
DSM 5:59:58 PM
noice
George Korein 6:00:22 PM
only a fraction is like a museum. the rest is a giant playground maze with all kinds of excellent surprises (don't spoil for yourself!) and no screens
Lizbot (host) 6:00:25 PM
@George - Raise the hoof, and the panda paw with Panda Bear and Chrome Hoof
Kristin Belz 6:00:51 PM
i've heard such great things about that museum and thought i gotta go there just for that! you confirm that thought!
Lizbot (host) 6:00:52 PM
@DSM - I play this full well knowing I will 100% have it stuck in my head for at least a day, but that's fine by me.
Lizbot (host) 6:01:00 PM
Hi Kristin!
George Korein 6:01:00 PM
hemph
Ossy Hyouka 6:01:34 PM
Daft Punk core
Lizbot (host) 6:02:10 PM
@Kristin B - Yeah, my husband heard about it 15+ years ago on a discussion board with some musicians in Chicago and always wanted to go, so we scheduled this trip near his birthday! It really DID live up to the hype! I had so much fun, it's worth flying to St. Louis for that alone
Brian D 6:02:30 PM
Ya that was a crazy oddball having Sha Na Na at Woodstock 69. coming down off of the low ph journeys and... early morning Sha Na Na on stage! No Bowser there tho. I think he came only later in the tv show era.
Lizbot (host) 6:02:36 PM
@Ossy - better than foam core!
George Korein 6:03:13 PM
doing it wrong, everybody will be angry if you're doing it wrong
Kristin Belz 6:03:29 PM
we have relatives on my sister in laws side who live there, and so brother's family has been and just raved about it. still have a college friend who lives there too - should go for baseball and "museum"! glad you had a great trip and are back on air!
Lizbot (host) 6:03:40 PM
@Brian D - yeah, what a weird choice but I'm glad because it made me aware of them!
Lizbot (host) 6:04:07 PM
@Brian D - I was watching a Bowser-era performance in San Francisco on YouTube last week and it was HI NRG!
Brian D 6:04:13 PM
Panda Bear. Pan da Peter. Pan da cloven hoofed free spirited trickster
DSM 6:04:40 PM
lol that last George comment
George Korein 6:05:24 PM
another thing about City Museum that is rare: it's not branded, it's not tied into any theme park, company, entertainment IP etc.
Lizbot (host) 6:05:25 PM
@Kristin B - Yes! Do it! The Cardinals play right next to the Arch. Buy some Fitz's rootbeer of Cardinal Cream and a gooey butter cake and see a game, ride the Arch tram and then spend an entire day in City Museum!
Brian D 6:06:11 PM
Daft Punk lovely misheard lyric for the big hit "Get Lucky" = "like a Mexican monkey". Try singing that along with and you will never get it out of your head. Unless you have a Maxell head demagnetizer kit....
George Korein 6:06:18 PM
I mean for something that is kind of an amusement park
Lizbot (host) 6:06:38 PM
@George - Yes! And the ppl who work there are generally awesome. The vibe is so good. Go on a day without rain so you can hang on the roof - hand-powered 80 year-old Ferris wheel up there! and LOTS of other cool stuff!
Lizbot (host) 6:07:15 PM
@Brian D - Brass Monkey, that Mexican monkey
Brian D 6:07:38 PM
It's a floor cleaner! It's a dessert topping. It's an amusement park! I can't believe it's not an amusement park! I was a teenage amusement park! Gee your hair smells like an amusement park!

Brian D 6:11:54 PM
And they told two beers and so on and so on and so on....
Lizbot (host) 6:11:59 PM
Then get yourself some ice cream
Kristin Belz 6:12:14 PM
@lizbot - i'm taking note of that itinerary!!
Brian D 6:14:22 PM
There was an extension I found you could put on your computer browser that would allow you to turn youtube videos into a big grid of tiny versions of the screen and then " pull them " in different directions creating trails etc.... fun toy. Wonder if that still exists.
Brian D 6:16:24 PM
Vermont Country Store catalog had a lot of those old 70s brands from tv ads. Candy, shampoo you name it. Some companies buy rights to the old names, branding etc and they are reborn. Pabst is another example of that (not avail at VT Country Store)
Wes Steenson 6:16:46 PM

Lizbot (host) 6:18:33 PM
@Brian D - ooooh, I wanna play with that YouTube toy!
Wes Steenson 6:18:40 PM
Standell’s Dirty Water?! We played that all the time in my old bar band days…
Brian D 6:18:51 PM
Keeping Skor at home. Keeping Heath at work.
Lizbot (host) 6:19:18 PM
@Brian D - We did a lotta camping and hiking in Vermont when I was a kid and I remember that store well. We never bought anything there but always browsed for the novelty
Brian D 6:19:40 PM
I found that ext 10+ years ago.... on an old computer now ... hmmm... had some name like yoooootoooobit or some such
Wes Steenson 6:19:47 PM
@LizBot - that’s another WPRB deejay…
Lizbot (host) 6:19:55 PM
@Wes - Yeah, I'll bet that one gets more play in Boston, even though The Standells were an LA band
Brian D 6:19:59 PM
VT Country Store = BEST FREE SAMPLES
Lizbot (host) 6:20:25 PM
@Brian - Keeping skyr at home, keeping yogurt at work
Brian D 6:20:26 PM
Same. We went once. No purchases. Lookee lookees. Samplee samplees.
Brian D 6:21:39 PM
Keeping Frusen Glädjé in another era frozen (ha ) in time. Keeping Häagen-Dazs on notice.
Wes Steenson 6:21:50 PM
And once again I’m going to mention that The Crazy World of Arthur Brown performed at a dance in my high school. Maybe 1969 or 70…
Lizbot (host) 6:22:16 PM
@Brian D - We also always hit up the Maple Syrup Museum and store and I always experienced buyer's remorse after getting those maple sugar candies in the shape of maple leaves because just one or two of those puppies caused sugar overload, and yet I always got them the next summer. They were sorta like a natural version of candy corn
Brian D 6:22:39 PM
Keeping Sky at home. Keeping Finlandia at work (buried in the secret drawer of desk)
Lizbot (host) 6:23:04 PM
@Wes - You mentioned that before here and yet I forgot, so I'm happy to be reminded and imagine teen Wes dancing to Arthur Brown live! That is so nuts
Brian D 6:23:19 PM
Ya get those little swollen taste bud sores sticking out of the tip o yer tongue? The birthday party curse!
Brian D 6:23:28 PM
Sugar scars
Lizbot (host) 6:23:32 PM
@Brian D - Ha! That's getting a jumpstart on the holiday weekend for sure
Brian D 6:24:43 PM
You may have seen the era where Carl Palmer (of ELP) replaced the touring drummer in Crazy World o Arthur Brown.
Lizbot (host) 6:25:46 PM
@Brian D - I loathe fake maple syrup, and real maple syrup is good in small quantities, but damn, that candy is like maple sugar concentrate x1000 injected right into the veins. I always tossed it after eating two bite-sized pieces. It's like the pure cane sugar juice they sell in Hawaii and various other tropical places - it's TOO intense. That stuff made me light-headed and I felt like I could fly off the side of the cliff along the Road to Hana
Lizbot (host) 6:26:26 PM
@Brian D - Huh, I never knew Palmer played with CWoAB
Lizbot (host) 6:26:53 PM
Pure cane sugar juice = 6 black coffees. No thanks!
Wes Steenson 6:31:33 PM
No battles for me Ms Bot- I have musical engagements for both Friday and Saturday afternoons. They are both in NJ, tho…
Lizbot (host) 6:35:43 PM
@Wes - Shore Jersey or regular Jersey? I have an open invitation to use an unclaimed bedroom in a rental in Cape May, but I gotta work out a few schedule changes first!
Ossy Hyouka 6:36:55 PM
Love the brief intermission of T Bone and Cleo from Clifford The Big Red Dog!
Wes Steenson 6:37:41 PM
Thanks for the consideration Ms Bot, but they are right over the river from NE Phila. Just over an hour away.
