@ Readie Righteous (host) I used to think that the modern cadres of young rock bands have the coolest names (e.g., Illuminati Hotties, Vanishing Twin, The Retail Simps, et al). But the classic calypso greats had already beat out generations of modern pop stars. How can you not be totally captivated by the Mighty Wrangler, Mighty Sparrow, the Roaring Lion & Hellyard Steel Band, and Lord Melody -- even before they've launched a single transporting note into the warm, all-embracing Trinidad air?

@ Readie Righteous (host) Well, if you don't mind a bit more trivia ... WHOOPS!, I meant HISTORY from me ... Two members of the original Kingston Trio, whose mega pop charting hits (like "Tom Dooley") in the 1950s helped fuel the Folk Revival, were big calypso fans. And that was the music they planned to feature -- the "Kingston" was actually a nod to Kingston, Jamaica. Strange but true! (The group's Wiki article confirms this.)

@Richard - as a kid, my brother and Sister and I listened to Kingston Trio a lot - our folks loved folk music. I learned to play guitar by ear listening to those records and Peter, Paul and Mary, Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan and so many others! Yeah the Trio were my introduction to calypso!

Let us never forget and always cherish the great Black Jamaican-American singer, actor and social activist Harry Belafonte who took America and the world by a popular storm of hurricane proportions. (And who's still with us at age 95, bless him.) He was and remains a huge and beloved Black superstar. And his 1956 breakout album "Calypso" was the first million-selling LP by a single (non- band, orchestra or Broadway show) performer.
