Was that a mandolin or a capoed-up 12 string guitar playing leads on that one?

It was two guitars -- Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang (who recorded as Blind Willie Dunn on race records).

They very gracefully doubled each other's lines making it sound like a twelve string

@Sonny Boy III (host) Another question: The kind of vocal effects that Etta James contributed as her equivalent of an instrumental to "Woke Up This Morning" -- is that considered a kind of scat singing? Or a different vocal improv category?

Good question! She got the call and response going with the sax but was imitating the hard-edged sound of RnB sax rather than a jazz sax sound. I'd still call it scatting but would be glad to be corrected!

I saw Monster Magnet play “Evil” live and was impressed that they had the good taste to cover a Howlin’ Wolf song. But then I found out they based their rendition on the lousy version by the 70’s rock band Cactus.

In college I heard and acapella group doing an obscure Bob Dylan song. Then I found out Adele had covered it.

That “Sugaree” is different than the great song that Hank Ballard and His Midnighters recorded in 1959.
