TAndy 10:03:51 AM
mornin!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:10:03 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Loved "Work Ox Blues.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:11:40 AM
Was that a mandolin or a capoed-up 12 string guitar playing leads on that one?
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:13:46 AM
It was two guitars -- Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang (who recorded as Blind Willie Dunn on race records).
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:14:23 AM
They very gracefully doubled each other's lines making it sound like a twelve string
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:20:14 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Wow! Thanks.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:25:29 AM
@Sonny Boy III (host) Another question: The kind of vocal effects that Etta James contributed as her equivalent of an instrumental to "Woke Up This Morning" -- is that considered a kind of scat singing? Or a different vocal improv category?
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:26:15 AM
... "equivalent of an instrumental break"
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:29:08 AM
Good question! She got the call and response going with the sax but was imitating the hard-edged sound of RnB sax rather than a jazz sax sound. I'd still call it scatting but would be glad to be corrected!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:40:07 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) I'll ask around and let you know what I learn. It was truly terrific. and thanks for pointing out the "call and response" she got into with the sax.
Fern MacBean 10:52:48 AM
Sonny Boy Williamson III ! Thanks for another lovely morning of music !
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:08:47 AM
Thanks Fern! And you're welcome.
Paul Nolan 11:18:48 AM
Great to hear that Al Wilson harp solo on Boogie Chillen, the side of the double album with him and Hooker as duets is amazing. He was such a unique player .
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:19:06 AM
Glad you enjoyed it Paul!
David Shortell 11:49:04 AM
I saw Monster Magnet play “Evil” live and was impressed that they had the good taste to cover a Howlin’ Wolf song. But then I found out they based their rendition on the lousy version by the 70’s rock band Cactus.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:52:16 AM
In college I heard and acapella group doing an obscure Bob Dylan song. Then I found out Adele had covered it.
David Shortell 11:54:12 AM
Which Dylan song, Sonny?
Christine 11:54:19 AM
Sounding good, SBW III 📻 🎶
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:54:58 AM
"Make You Feel My Love" from Time Out of Mind.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:55:05 AM
Thanks Christine!
Christine 11:55:46 AM
The love crackles ✨️ on the record are a bonus.
David Shortell 11:57:35 AM
That “Sugaree” is different than the great song that Hank Ballard and His Midnighters recorded in 1959.
Anthony B. Creamer III 11:57:57 AM
Happy Traum played a great Brownie tune at the Folk Festival this weekend. Happy was a student.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:58:13 AM
I know a "shake sugaree" from Elizabeth Cotten.
TAndy 11:59:21 AM
Thanks for the show, SBW III
David Shortell 11:59:52 AM
I’m sure Mance Lipscomb is not related to Dennis Lipscomb, Deborah Harry’s costar in “Union City” (adapted from the Cornell Woolrich short story “The Corpse Next Door”).
Sonny Boy III (host) 12:00:48 PM
Thanks everyone! See you in two weeks.
