Penn State public radio station would start their jazz show theme with "Very Special" from this lp. Then a roommate had it. And I was hooked. Found it on cd years later rearranged track listing and extra stuff. But that first time I heard it. so good

Re: bending the strings with the fingers: True somewhat... but bending only makes the pitch go upward. To make the pitch go down you would have to either "pre-bend" and then release. Or alter the tuning pegs while playing. It sounded like the latter. Adrian Legg he did that

One time when I decided to get serious about my electric bass skills I went to Sam Goody and bought Motown collections - The Best of The Supremes, Best of The Four Tops, Best of The Temptations. Put the headphones on and learned those James Jamerson bass parts. It’s a master class.

@Rofflestomp I was so disappointed when I watched the Matchstick Men movie and Pictures Of Matchstick Men wasn’t in it.

@Readie - after that summer, I started passing auditions. It’s not just learning those songs, it’s about how Jamerson’s bass parts lift and push the songs. He was an absolute genius. 2 bassists I think of as geniuses have been mentioned in the chat tonight- Jamerson and Mingus.

I love the Camper Van Beethoven version for personal reasons.
