Welcome, everybody!
Christine 12:00:59 PM
Hi Jerry!
Christine 12:01:42 PM
Sounding good 👍
Brian D 12:01:50 PM
Hello Jerry and all. Here we go... chime rack signals the entry....
Christine 12:02:14 PM
This sounds Sun Ra-esque 🚀 🌌
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:02:34 PM
Hi Christine, Brian! Was that ID audible?
Christine 12:03:02 PM
Yes, it was. 📻🔊
Patrick Blanco 12:03:20 PM
Greetings to Commander Gordon and his Lost Planet Airpersons.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:52 PM
Christine, this was a 1-hit cosmic wonder from 1974. And you are perceptive, Julian Priester spent some time in the Sn Ra band. Surprisingly, this album was on ECM
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:04:32 PM
Hi Patrick! Those Phantastic Phillies!
Patrick Blanco 12:05:02 PM
Bo Diddley. My favorite artist banned by Ed Sullivan.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:05:38 PM
I don't know that story. Did he give Ed the finger?
Patrick Blanco 12:06:05 PM
Jerry Did you save any copies of the hit single Phillies Fever from 1976
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:06:33 PM
Yes, I have one. And a Mickey Mantle related single also.
Stephen Higgins 12:07:28 PM
Hi Jerry...this sounds like "Chasing the Voodo Down" by Miles. Very cool!
Brian D 12:07:30 PM
Got that Muhammad Ali lp too?
Patrick Blanco 12:07:31 PM
Bo was told not to sing Bo Diddley.Bo being Bo he did.Ed banned him.
ROFFLESTOMP 12:08:05 PM
The golden age of Victrola. :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:10 PM
I have Pete Rose stamps, a Charlie Hustle hat, and 4 remaining pages of the Phillies 1959 Phillies guide magazine
ROFFLESTOMP 12:08:18 PM
Hi Jerry, Hi folks!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:27 PM
Hey RS, how are ya?
Brian D 12:08:27 PM
Yeah Stephen! I thought it was right in that 1969-1970 Miles vein too
Christine 12:08:43 PM
How about a recording of Del Reeves song "Philadelphia Fillies?" ⚾
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:09:36 PM
Hi Stephen! You are right, I am noticing that now..5 years later
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:10:21 PM
Christine, I don't know about that but I need it!
ROFFLESTOMP 12:10:42 PM
All good Jerry. Nice and cool, compaired to yesterday at least. Hope things are good where you are too.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:19 PM
Air conditioning on, dogs napping, all is well. Actually a little overcast for me
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:12:30 PM
Stephen, Brian, you are absolutely right! What Miles wrought!
ROFFLESTOMP 12:12:38 PM
Cosmic Jazz new releases? Sign me up!
Christine 12:14:54 PM
@Jerry, the song is a lot of fun. It's not so much about the baseball team! I heard it on WPRB (of course) months ago; I think Dana K was the DJ who played it. TY, Dana K!
Patrick Blanco 12:15:32 PM
Today’s Fun Fact:In 1972 Carly Simon had a huge hit with You’re So Vain.True music scene cognoscenti know that the subject of the song is.....our own Jerry Gordon.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:15:35 PM
first hour is seventies cosmic stuff, second hour lots of new cosmic type releases
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 12:15:42 PM
Cosmic jazz, you say? 😎
Rob F 12:15:52 PM
Yes, enjoying this song
Stephen Higgins 12:16:06 PM
Love this, a sonic space journey.
ROFFLESTOMP 12:16:29 PM
LOL, right on que ǝʌɐꓷ!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:17:15 PM
Dave, no sitars, but a special direction for today! Yo know most of the stuff if not all.
Brian D 12:18:38 PM
Another one I mention a lot in chat for good early 70s funky fusion etc is Donald Byrd "Electric Byrd". Very cool stuff
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:18:39 PM
Hi Rob F. This album was very big with the jazz cognoscenti in 1974, kind of the sound of that year as was the song right after it from 1974.
DSM 12:19:32 PM
I agree with everyone, this is great! 🌌
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:37 PM
Brian, a fairly obscure Donald Byrd album before his Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds album.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:58 PM
Hey DSM, glad you're here and glad you are enjoying it
ROFFLESTOMP 12:20:08 PM
Cosmic Jazz has a picture of Gong next to it in the encyclopedias I'm sure. The 70's did cosmic rather well.
Brian D 12:20:43 PM
This is on my list definitely. Julian still with us! Catching up to Marshall Allen .... he's at 87 now
Brian D 12:21:25 PM
Sounds like Mr Duke... George that is
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:23:55 PM
Yup! The early 70s, plenty of customers tripping on weekends and listening to Gong. In jazz, my favorite period. 1969-1974. For funk, just about the same time. By 1975-76 things started getting more commercial in jazz and funk
Christine 12:24:50 PM
Pure spaciness! 🌌
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:26:17 PM
Here it is!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:26:50 PM
One of the many lives of Herbie Hancock
Brian D 12:27:14 PM
Ahhh yes.... journey to Mwandishi land
Rob F 12:28:27 PM
Brian D can name that tune in __ notes
Brian D 12:28:29 PM
Bennie on the low and high reeds humming and singing away
Brian D 12:29:52 PM
George Duke was a guess before refreshing the playlist page. Mwandishi I had to refresh the page so no guess there
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:30:44 PM
George Duke was good!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:32:18 PM
...guess/knowledge
ROFFLESTOMP 12:32:42 PM
Which was a perfect dovetail for Herbie Hancock!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:15 PM
Cool, RS
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:41:06 PM
The quintessential Joe Henderson solo. Very satisfying!
Brian D 12:43:17 PM
What a band Here!
Christine 12:48:46 PM
Digging the percussion 🎶
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:50:23 PM
Haha, love it Christine, your thing!
Christine 12:54:21 PM
There's that theme song 🐦
Christine 12:54:34 PM
Fashionably late
ROFFLESTOMP 12:55:00 PM
Theme song almost an hour in! Now this is cosmic!
Ambrose Hughes 12:55:19 PM
Hello Jerry! Hi the chat!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:55:45 PM
I'm still tring to summon up the guts to play the theme after 1 pm
ROFFLESTOMP 12:55:54 PM
Hi bro!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:01 PM
Hey Ambrose, glad you're here!
ROFFLESTOMP 1:00:03 PM
As an outro, rolling the theme toward the end does seem a bit weird, but if any one can make it work Jerry, you can. And totally be hitting all the marks along the way!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:08:57 PM
RS, I do my best to present good segues and organic, bodily musical dynamis! Thanks for recognizing that. (I don't always hit my mark though!)
ROFFLESTOMP 1:13:37 PM
I am so glad to get to hear what you have found to be awesome over the years. It's a treat ever week. I love your theme song, where ever it is, is just a point in time. Wonderful content all around!
Christine 1:14:36 PM
Friday afternoon doesn't really begin 'til the theme song starts playing...
ROFFLESTOMP 1:14:53 PM
Good point C!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:15:09 PM
Thank you, RS, glad to hear it, I know you are a well-rounded and knowledgeable listen (like so many of the chatters here!)
ROFFLESTOMP 1:15:45 PM
The chatters are my teachers quite often. :)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:17:50 PM
I can dig it!
ROFFLESTOMP 1:17:54 PM
Bo Diddly is gonna be such a hard right turn too. Insane, and so cool.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:18:34 PM
It will have as much energy as this show, I think everyone will be shocked and will enjoy
Christine 1:18:45 PM
First we have to pilot the spaceship back from Mercury!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:19:18 PM
Haha, it is going to make a very funky landing
Brian D 1:36:34 PM
Sounds like Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force sat in with the band here
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:37:14 PM
I'll have to check that out!
ROFFLESTOMP 1:39:46 PM
A banjo in this environment screams Bela Fleck to me.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:40:19 PM
He'd fit right in!
Christine 1:40:26 PM
We're still in space, closing in on the Webb telescope. 🛰
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:40:56 PM
stay there until 2 pm
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:41:23 PM
I thought I lost a few people during The Dirty Duck Blues
Ambrose Hughes 1:46:15 PM
@Jerry, I didn't know what to think, reefer madness maybe ...
Ambrose Hughes 1:46:47 PM
This track is class!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:47:04 PM
Yes, coming from that place but probably not herb, I'm not sure
Christine 1:47:16 PM
Absolutely top-notch.
Christine 1:50:51 PM
Too cosmic; is there such a thing? 🪐 That last track was orbiting the Sun at the L2 point.
Christine 1:59:32 PM
Space is the Place (we don't want to leave)
Brian D 2:04:30 PM
Firesign!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:05:21 PM
Thanks Christine
Christine 2:05:29 PM
What a station ID! 🏆
ROFFLESTOMP 2:06:41 PM
Cruising altitude in space!
Kevin L 2:08:24 PM
i want candy sounds like this
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:10:03 PM
Kevin, that is the PERFECT example of the Bo Diddley rhythm
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:10:21 PM
I Want Candy, one of the greatest songs
Kevin L 2:11:47 PM
I just looked it up on wiki. Didn't know Bow Wow Wow just covered it
Brian D 2:11:52 PM
I Want Candy by the Strangeloves! Then Bow Wow Wow took a turn in the 80s. That's where I heard it on the MTV
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:12:50 PM
I was obsessed with The Strangeloves
Christine 2:13:08 PM
Who Do You Love, Hand Jive, Not Fade Away, and Magic Bus too.
Kevin L 2:13:16 PM
I'll have to look up Strangeloves, Brian
Brian D 2:13:52 PM
Heard the Strangeloves version on some local radio station sometime in late 80s early 90s and thought..... hey.. thats the Bow Wow Wow song ha
ROFFLESTOMP 2:13:54 PM
Wow, that is so spot on, never got it and Bo is killing it! This is way cool!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:14:31 PM
You got it Christine
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:15:07 PM
Strangeloves-CaraLin
Brian D 2:16:33 PM
Buddy Holly Not Fade Away. Then Stones and the Dead. The Bo Diddley rhythm in Not Fade Away.. . That would just carry on in your head and in the audience clapping at Dead shows
Christine 2:16:35 PM
I am another one who heard I Want Candy on MTv and didn't know it was a cover.
Kevin L 2:16:48 PM
Cara-lin sorta has a Motown drum sound
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:19:01 PM
I find every day songs that I thought were the original but were actually the cover. Non-stop
ROFFLESTOMP 2:19:10 PM
I knew it was a cover, but a young Malaysian girl with an ice cream cone made me not think about it too much back then.
Brian D 2:19:27 PM
Then the Dead got to he back up band for Bo Diddley in 1972 at a gig in NYC at the Academy of Music. Officially released years later as Dick's Picks Vol 30
Brian D 2:20:08 PM
Hells Angels benefit show
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:37 PM
RS, send pictures
ROFFLESTOMP 2:20:58 PM
lol
Brian D 2:21:22 PM
Lonesome George had a good solid rhythm section
Christine 2:21:47 PM
Delaware Destroyers!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:22:15 PM
I just learned about that Dicks Picks Vol 30 yesterday, from Mok
Brian D 2:23:08 PM
Jeff Simon on drums lived right up the road from where I grew up. I remember hearing stories about GTatDTs gig down New Falls Road at the bingo hall from older sister and other people's siblings
ROFFLESTOMP 2:23:25 PM
Oh, she was Burmese. The mind forgets these things.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:25:50 PM
noted
Brian D 2:25:58 PM
Then later on a band i was in opened up for just The Destroyers (no George) at JC Dobbs aka Pontiac Grille in Philly. Got to say hey to Jeff and tell him the school bus used to go right by his old house ha
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:26:27 PM
Very cool!
ROFFLESTOMP 2:26:42 PM
Nice!
Kevin L 2:28:06 PM
From what you said, Rufflestomp, I thought she wore an ice cream cone on her head like a Devo thing. nope she licks it
ROFFLESTOMP 2:29:05 PM
Kevin L, IKR? Pretty wild, even for the 80's.
Brian D 2:29:12 PM
Annabella from Bow Wow Wow is only 2 years older than me.. she was 13 when they started wow
Kevin L 2:29:22 PM
Walter Trout did a live Red House that's incredible!
Brian D 2:29:54 PM
English -Burmese singer that was mentioned here
Christine 2:30:11 PM
Evidence Records!
ROFFLESTOMP 2:30:14 PM
Brian D, I kinda remember that was what brought down the band.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:30:41 PM
Kevin L/Red House/unreal
Brian D 2:30:53 PM
So that makes her about 16 when I Want Candy cover hit
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:31:10 PM
RS, I thought you were talking about an old girlfriend before
Brian D 2:34:02 PM
Not sure if it was her age or just the usual band conflicts/ squabbles / tour exhaustion etc. I read they got back together.
Kevin L 2:34:25 PM
I Remember when Thorogoods album came out I was working a record store and we couldn't get the record for months. There was some distribution problem
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:34:43 PM
Rounder Records
Kevin L 2:35:02 PM
yes
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:35:08 PM
Then a small independent
Kevin L 2:35:46 PM
Everyone would come in asking for it
ROFFLESTOMP 2:36:05 PM
Brian D, yea, I heard it was her parents that squelched it, and they never recovered when she grew up.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:36:10 PM
Where were you working?
Kevin L 2:36:43 PM
In Jersey. Place was called Keller's house of music
Brian D 2:36:44 PM
George Thorogood did Ride On Josephine very well too . Very similar to that Sardinas you played. George's version was the first i heard. And George paid homage to Bo D putting him in his Bad to he Bone video. Ha. Playing pool at the bar.
Kevin L 2:37:40 PM
yeah i thought the Sardinas was Thorogood at first just now
Patrick White (1) 2:38:16 PM
George Thorogood was a very good amateur baseball player also.
Kevin L 2:38:45 PM
there's so much info here
ROFFLESTOMP 2:38:47 PM
Thorogood sure did that rhythmscape well.
Patrick White (1) 2:40:17 PM
I was able to see Bo Diddley live on Randalls Island near end of his career.Little Steven had huge festival.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:40:50 PM
Patrick, you are everywhere, constantly travelling!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:41:36 PM
This was a big surprise to me when I found out it was a cover
Kevin L 2:43:18 PM
I have to shower. I'll have music cranked for last part of show. Great show, Jerry! so long all!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:43:36 PM
Thanks, Kevin
ROFFLESTOMP 2:44:35 PM
Clean break Kevin. :) later
David Shortell 2:45:45 PM
I was there, Patrick. Back pains troubled him. He said, If B.B. King can sit playing, so can I!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:46:13 PM
Hey David
David Shortell 2:46:59 PM
"I wish somebody would tell me what Diddy Wah Diddy means" --Blind Blake.
Brian D 2:47:02 PM
Bo was booked at Philly Folk Fest in mid 90s. Had to cancel due to some health issue. I think they either had The Band or maybe Los Lobos as a fill in for him. Both of them played the fest right around that 1994-96 range. I remember Tom Rush was definitely there that year Bo bowed out. Tom did a nice solo acoustic gtr medley of Bo songs. Philly Folk Fest ever- present sound system problems did not deter Tom ha
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:47:11 PM
Love it, David
Patrick White (1) 2:47:22 PM
Yeah then the NY Dolls followed him and said we are going to play a Bo Diddley song and we will remember all the words to it.
Brian D 2:47:43 PM
Yeah I think it was back trouble that caused him to miss Philly Folk Fest that year
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:48:17 PM
Very interesting info, Patrick. Unbelievable that you saw the NY Dolls.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:48:51 PM
I knew you were a NY Dolls kind of guy
Patrick White (1) 2:50:27 PM
Their fan base very intimidating
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:50:46 PM
Speaking of....
Patrick White (1) 2:51:06 PM
Looked like a combo of Hells Angels and the Westies.
Brian D 2:51:07 PM
Bluegrass / Old Time band leader and story teller expert Ron Thomason of Dry Branch Fire Squad said of the Philly Folk Fest sound crew, ".... well.... let's just say they couldn't afford good smelling tobacco to roll their own ..."
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:51:16 PM
excellent timing on youor part, PJ
Christine 2:52:15 PM
💊 💊 💊
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:52:33 PM
Ha, you are a master of icons
Christine 2:52:54 PM
How is it almost 3:00? Are we all on pills?
Patrick White (1) 2:53:01 PM
Good thing i didnt mention Donny Osmond.
David Shortell 2:53:14 PM
Arthur Kane was still alive when the Dolls were booked for the August 14, 2004 show at Randall's Island. He died July 13 though.
Brian D 2:53:15 PM
Love this song Pills! A great sister song done by Hank III is "Pills I Took" on the excellent Straight to Hell lp. Also a cover
Christine 2:53:30 PM
There's an intimidating fan base. (D. Osmond)
Brian D 2:56:41 PM
The Captain Beefheart Legendary A&M Sessions were recordings produced by David Gates of soft 70s band Bread
David Shortell 2:57:00 PM
Nice to honor Jimy Sohns, Jerry.
Patrick White (1) 2:57:02 PM
Thanks Jerry.Have a great Week Jerry and all Spinotranati.
