Greetings from the inner banks of North Carolina. Have you touched something near you today?
Brian D 3:01:45 PM
VEGETABLE GREMLIN!
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:02:05 PM
Definitely the best gremlin
Brian D 3:02:17 PM
Now... get up and touch things while you dance.... Ha! Station ID fame!
Brian D 3:03:35 PM
This rhythm... and the music behind "land of the kidney shaped tables..." are just embedded in the brain....
Liz Bot 3:03:36 PM
Ahhhh, the ghosts of station IDs past
Liz Bot 3:03:48 PM
📻 👻 💃🏻
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:04:05 PM
Was just thinking that this out to be a station ID. I guess it already was
Brian D 3:04:46 PM
I heard the whispering wprbprinceton wprbprinceton wprbprinceton during that pause speaking of embedded... djyall hear that too?
Brian D 3:06:44 PM
The in studio djs may have dialed that one up in the past year once or twice... i do not think i have heard kidney shaped tables/ mad pad man in a long while tho
Liz Bot 3:06:57 PM
It was a beloved station ID until the pandemic. I don’t think I’ve seen it in the folder of IDs salvaged from the studio
Brian D 3:08:07 PM
I think there was a Grady show last fall where we just kept requesting station id's. He played a bunch for us
Liz Bot 3:08:53 PM
Hi Brian D - I love “It’s a mad pad” ID, and I miss it too. I’m trying to remember what that one was called in the carts/IR machine…I think it was called something like Groovy or Swingin’, but that wasn’t quite it
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:09:51 PM
Ahh, the kidney-shaped table. I wish I remembered what that ID was called
Liz Bot 3:10:08 PM
I also miss the ID that was called “Bizarre” and had a little girl and an adult man asking questions- “I like the one about the fat lady and the thin mitten…” that’s right, child, and carelessness can cause other problems too”
Liz Bot 3:10:26 PM
Hi Dan! Yea! It’s on the tip of my tongue!
Brian D 3:10:29 PM
Dan R, the "pedaling up highway one..." love cult inductee station ID came up in chat discussions a bunch recently. Didn't you have back story on that? I know i heard the full audio once on wprb about 20 years ago . The pitch of voice was lower.
Liz Bot 3:11:09 PM
@Dan / Brian D - also the “tip-top of the cone-shaped tower, and the top was to be so high, it would..”
Liz Bot 3:11:46 PM
@Brian D- someone, I think Dan R, played the recording that ID is from recently
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:11:48 PM
It's from a crazy Trunk records compilation called "Resurrection: The Amplified Bible of Heavenly Grooves" of Christian psychedelia
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:11:55 PM
https://www.discogs.com/release/409405-Various-Resurrection
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:12:31 PM
We were discussing it on the WPRB staff FB recently. I remember making that ID. It's me doing the non-recording vocals. I wish I had a copy of the sound file for it
Brian D 3:12:37 PM
Ooooo I thought of one the other day.... there's a child like voice maybe Stan or Kyle from South Park.. (or a sound a like) stating "Ok... you can come out now...." and maybe a dog/ wolf howl? Anyone remember that?
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:13:23 PM
@Lizbot: Isn't that one the tower of babble ID?
Brian D 3:14:03 PM
... and carelessness can bring other things... they couldn't do it.... and neither could you
Liz Bot 3:14:53 PM
@Dan R - Yes!
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:15:39 PM
That's an old one, too. I think it was old even when we started
Brian D 3:16:04 PM
Does anyone- know what we can say and what we can't say? I don't have time to research all the laws so the only thing i can say about that is....
Liz Bot 3:16:14 PM
@Dan R - oh THAT’s where I saw it - in the FB staff group. It has pretty sweet album art!
Liz Bot 3:18:00 PM
EXUMA!
Brian D 3:18:16 PM
OBEAH!
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:18:28 PM
Featured prominently in NOPE
Liz Bot 3:18:41 PM
I was just on the actual island of Exuma in the Bahamas last March and I asked the locals about Tony MacKay, AKA Exuma the Obeah Man. They said he was born on Cat Island but lived on Exuma
Liz Bot 3:19:08 PM
This one Bahamian cab driver gave me the lowdown on so much good Bahamian music, old and new
Liz Bot 3:19:39 PM
Did a whole 3-hr show of Bahamian music, rake & scrape, etc from Exuma after that trip
Brian D 3:19:49 PM
That post Bahamas trip show was a great one Lizbot!
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:20:01 PM
That sounds awesome
Liz Bot 3:21:11 PM
@Dan R - I emitted a small gasp when I heard this in NOPE last week! Good music as always in Jordan Peele movies.
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:21:56 PM
Will be honest that I didn't know it before. Will absolutely be listening to more, though
Liz Bot 3:22:05 PM
@Dan R - Re: Tower of Babble ID- yeah, I think so. The makers of Barking Dog ID called me once many years ago during my show, just after I played it, to say very proudly that they made that one! I They’re alum and I think might be married now? They said they made it in the early or mid 90s
Brian D 3:23:42 PM
I bought a great comp on Bandcamp from Numero Group. "Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay". Had some stuff I heard on your show Lizbot. The cautionary tale "Don't Touch That Thing" etc
Brian D 3:25:01 PM
Captain Beefheart has a song titled Obeah Man
Brian D 3:27:12 PM
Binker and Moses gets my ear every time. Heard them on various djs shows in past 2 years
Brian D 3:35:51 PM
Ha! Nice Dan!
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:36:11 PM
Yeah, something about the digital manipulation makes that Binker and Moses really nice
TAndy 3:48:37 PM
That Gwenno 💙
TAndy 3:50:11 PM
Also I do believe that Zeal & Ardor does a proto-Blues and Black Metal fusion. Though his music has direct hymnals and spirituals from the Antebellum South, that directly influenced the formation of Blues anyway.
Dan Ruccia (host) 3:51:26 PM
Yeah, the writeup I saw compared Crestfallen Dusk to Zeal and Ardor. It's a fascinating direction. I feel like Horseback occasionally mines that territory, too
TAndy 3:54:02 PM
Moor Mother 💙💙💙💙💙
Brian D 3:59:55 PM
There's a good one! Is that Readie in her news days?
Mark Reichard 4:00:51 PM
Boy you're sure hitting all my favorites today! How many performers do you know who sing in Cornish?
Dan Ruccia (host) 4:01:04 PM
Good question! I don't think I was around when that was created
Dan Ruccia (host) 4:01:41 PM
@Mark Certainly there's more than one, right?? I'd kinda be ok if Gwenno was the only one, though
Mark Reichard 4:02:26 PM
She's the first one I heard about
Brian D 4:07:07 PM
Nice one here
Dan Ruccia (host) 4:12:57 PM
That was definitely a set of serious basslines
Dan Ruccia (host) 4:37:30 PM
Apparently this week's show can't escape the enticing pull of vaporwave
Brian D 4:41:48 PM
This is a cool new release
TAndy 4:52:20 PM
Thanks for the show Dan!
Krista 4:53:52 PM
Another Angeline to add to my list
Dan Ruccia (host) 4:57:02 PM
It's a good one!
Dan Ruccia (host) 4:57:11 PM
Thanks for tuning in, y'all!
