Good Music from Bad Films

This episode focuses on the tireless efforts of soundtrack curators to slip good music into terrible movies. Nicolas Cage makes several appearances, as does Radiohead. We try to answer these questions:

Why was Faceoff made? Why was another version of it made in 2016 with Kevin Costner? Why is the same rare Arab Disco track in both Criminal and Place in the Pines?

Today's Filmscapes is hosted by substitute DJ Krista from Habitat Enrichment. Feel free to drop your good music/bad film requests in the chat.

Good afternoon!
Jon Solomon 3:02:05 PM
Well, hello!
Colin 3:02:28 PM
oo exciting to see what our sub dj cooks up!
Brian D 3:02:34 PM
... stream it funk
Brian D 3:03:03 PM
Is fm working? Stream is glitch
DSM 3:03:17 PM
This sounds like an interesting show today, tho the OH SHITE music is on the the FM
Krista (host) 3:04:44 PM
let me email the mice who are supposed to be running in the wheel
Jon Solomon 3:05:09 PM
Texting them all presently...
Krista (host) 3:06:36 PM
Thank you Jon. Today I've tried to focus on genuinely terrible films with no redeemable qualities
Krista (host) 3:06:50 PM
though Faceoff does have some hilarious moments
Jon Solomon 3:07:07 PM
That's one of my favorite genres. I have a Face/Off-inspired shirt idea I hope to have out very soon...
Jon Solomon 3:07:32 PM
Shins on now?
Jon Solomon 3:07:41 PM
If so, you're good!
Mike Lupica 3:07:45 PM
I think you're good now.
Krista (host) 3:07:57 PM
yep! guess the film haha
DSM 3:08:07 PM
I will argue that there is not a single terrible Nicolas Cage movie
Mike Lupica 3:08:11 PM
Not sure why, the system jumped over your space in the cue. FIXT.
Krista (host) 3:08:28 PM
Have you seen Outcast, DSM?
Brian D 3:08:35 PM
I liked Place Beyond the Pines . Don't know if Place in the Pines is a different flick. I remember watching Travolta Cage face off but long time ago.
DSM 3:09:12 PM
Lol, no Krista, but I am most certain it is brilliant
DSM 3:12:14 PM
There's a good Faceoff inspired take on the don't tread on me logo that says something to the effect of "Don't steal my face and then have sex with my wife"
Krista (host) 3:12:39 PM
Place in the Pines I found so bad that I left the theater!! I was promised motorcycle stunt riding and instead a man starts robbing so he can provide for his child??? he could have provided childcare instead and that would have been more useful imo. I was also spoiled by Drive which I really enjoyed and wanted more of
DSM 3:13:41 PM
I was just left wondering why it was titled "the place beyond the pines" unless I missed something
Brian D 3:14:07 PM
Never saw all of Garden State (fell asleep or maybe lost interest) . Friends found out about that soundtrack ugh... like the 1st time they discovered some of all those bands. A not well put together soundtrack . Better songs (and bands ) could have been chosen
Krista (host) 3:15:36 PM
I was 15 when it came out and it was definitely the first time I heard the Shins! really a big movie for my age group and now I really cringe at the whole premise
Krista (host) 3:15:49 PM
Some guy stops taking his antidepressants and it cures his depression
Jon Solomon 3:18:15 PM
Harrison Ford!
DSM 3:19:43 PM
Lol watched all 3 Expendables in the $3 theater. Glutton for punishment
Joe 3:20:50 PM
What a premise .. aren't there some good songs in good movies as well ? maybe I'm just ignorant .. that's new to no one ..
Brian D 3:20:53 PM
ZYE-deh-koe ha
Jon Solomon 3:21:03 PM
This might be my favorite show premise of all time. Living near a $1.75 theater for a couple years meant I saw every possible bad movie in the 1998-2000 window.
Joe 3:22:24 PM
we all can agree that Braff should be spelled "barff"
DSM 3:22:48 PM
bless the second run theaters
Krista (host) 3:22:56 PM
lol Brian, my apologies.
Brian D 3:23:33 PM
Ha sounded like art deco when you said it
Jon Solomon 3:23:48 PM
DSM, there was a second run theater in PA just over the river I enjoyed often in the early 2000s. Would I have seen Not Another Teen Movie in the theater otherwise? Unlikely!
DSM 3:26:11 PM
Jon, I assume it is gone now? Ha, was Not Another Teen Movie from the Scary Movie parody crew? (I genuinely kinda enjoy those)
Krista (host) 3:27:16 PM
I also genuinely enjoyed Not Another Teen Movie, probably because I have seen all those teen movies
Commie Francis ☭ 3:27:37 PM
I'm trying to remember this horrible movie that came out when everyone was trying to make the new reservoir dogs and it had a scene very very similar to the reservoir dogs stuck in the middle with you scene and the song was good. But i can't remember the movie or the song. It was not 8 heads in a duffel bag but it was like that.
Jon Solomon 3:27:46 PM
I don't know when it closed but I am near-confident it shuttered in the mid-2000s.
Jon Solomon 3:27:51 PM
Commie, can I guess?
Commie Francis ☭ 3:28:07 PM
I wish you're next was a bad movie cause I love the Dwight twilley song in it
Commie Francis ☭ 3:28:12 PM
Yes please do!
Jon Solomon 3:28:48 PM
Boondock Saints?
Commie Francis ☭ 3:28:57 PM
Nope!
Jon Solomon 3:29:00 PM
Here's the closed Bucks County dollar theater's info - http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/22337
DSM 3:31:16 PM
Oh wow I live quite close to that location, too bad.
DSM 3:32:14 PM
cool website, gonna see if they have info on my hometown theaters, both now defunct
Brian D 3:33:27 PM
Pennsbury Theater was a classic. Always had Rocky Horror going every weekend forever in the 1980s
Commie Francis ☭ 3:34:18 PM
I used to go to this amazing theater in Brooklyn that was an old beautiful falling apart movie house that has first run movies but weird messed up prints and it wasn't technically a double feature but they alternated movies and didn't make you leave? And it was $6 and full of people drinking and smoking and also tons of kids at all hours
Commie Francis ☭ 3:34:47 PM
The commodore
Krista (host) 3:34:56 PM
I lived walking distance from an AMC that had 5 dollar all day tickets and no air conditioning so i saw A LOT of movies
Commie Francis ☭ 3:35:02 PM
I saw almost exclusively bad movies there
Krista (host) 3:35:07 PM
well I had no a/c, the AMC had cold blasting air
Commie Francis ☭ 3:36:16 PM
When they closed they had a poster for giant alligator movie lake placid up for years and years
Brian D 3:36:35 PM
Similar fare at a cheap 2nd run theater in Feasterville Pa . Used to be a major 1st run place in 70s early 80s, we saw 9 to 5 there and Ghandi among others. Then in the 90s it had the low price 2nd run stuff. Saw Pulp Fiction a year or so after it came out there
Jon Solomon 3:36:41 PM
The proudest accomplishment of my time living near the $1.50 theater was a Titan A.E. / Final Destination / The Skulls triple-feature (with a quick break for Thai food across the street in between movies two and three).
Jon Solomon 3:37:02 PM
Lake Placid is a GREAT bad movie. Betty White!
Commie Francis ☭ 3:37:52 PM
I saw the Marky mark planet of the apes there and when he kissed Helena Bonham Carter (as an ape person) someone yelled THAT'S NASTY
Krista (host) 3:38:06 PM
they're right, no one should kiss marky mark
Commie Francis ☭ 3:38:13 PM
Seriously
Brian D 3:40:32 PM
Caveman with Ringo, Shelley Long and his actual wife Barbara Bach is most likely easier to watch than Marky Helena Planet O'
Brian D 3:41:04 PM
I watched Caveman way too many times on cable back in the early 80s
Commie Francis ☭ 3:42:12 PM
I absolutely love the final destination movies btw. I should check if any more have come out
Commie Francis ☭ 3:42:35 PM
I know of caveman. Definitely better Ringo Starr than Marky marky
Commie Francis ☭ 3:43:39 PM
I should say i know of it but i haven't seen it
Brian D 3:43:47 PM
There are very few big Hollywood music star biopics that I like. James Brown with Chadwick B and the Bessie Smith flick with Queen Latifah are some exceptions. And the Ma Rainey one too
Colin 3:44:25 PM
wait... there's an Anchorman 2?!?!? hello welcome to my home under, this rock.
Commie Francis ☭ 3:45:36 PM
I saw anchorman 2 in the theater, i don't remember why. Probably dollar theater
Commie Francis ☭ 3:46:12 PM
FACE OFF RIP OFF???
Brian D 3:46:15 PM
Caveman is silly fun. But beware... no actual modern language dialog. All grunts, gestures and " cave names" . Or maybe don't beware! As that makes it even more fun
DSM 3:48:48 PM
I went to a Kevin Costner owned and themed restaurant in South Dakota and I was so confused. All the menu items were films of his related. Like the Field of Dreams burger etc.
Jon Solomon 3:49:08 PM
I have searched the Internet for "Nic Cage and the Bad Seeds" so you don't have to.
Commie Francis ☭ 3:49:23 PM
Kevin Costner is not who i would expect to have a himself themed restaurant!
DSM 3:49:51 PM
Nick Cave has a good story about meeting Nick Cage
Brian D 3:50:14 PM
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl I would think is way better (or Earl, the Dying Girl and I ha ha). Good scenery of Pittsburgh and and and Eno Eno Eno songs!
DSM 3:51:00 PM
Commie, me either! and it was kind of the only option in town I remember. And pretty bunk. Felt like a weird fever dream. I don't even enjoy Kevin Costner but I ate there
Commie Francis ☭ 3:51:25 PM
Did the field of dreams burger have corn on it?
Brian D 3:51:56 PM
Tatanka Burger
DSM 3:52:12 PM
That would make sense at least, but I don't think so!
Brian D 3:52:42 PM
Corn fed beef I bet so it counts
David Shortell 3:52:45 PM
Will we hear anything from Wes Anderson flicks? I dislike his movies but like their soundtracks.
Krista (host) 3:52:56 PM
That sounds like just the place I would stop. Waterworld...glass of water
Commie Francis ☭ 3:53:23 PM

The Big Chilled Empty Plate... (Costner "played" the deceased character but was cut from the film)
DSM 3:58:10 PM

I too love Waterworld and have seen it many times. Love his gills.

The Roastman is very good.

Good to know, Jon!

Pressure Drop can only be associated with The Harder They Come .. everything else is just an abberation.
Commie Francis ☭ 4:12:55 PM
is anyone else getting weird metallic sound issues?
Jon Solomon 4:13:35 PM
Pressure Drop is also used nicely in This Is England, a movie / series I like a great deal.
Commie Francis ☭ 4:13:48 PM
i think i also saw 50 first dates in the theater. i can't remember the last time i saw a movie i nthe theater, i think it was one of the newer star warses

Krista (host) 4:27:00 PM
American Pie: a film so bad you will RUN from the theater
Colin 4:27:04 PM
my bandcamp experiences were nothing like those movies.
Krista (host) 4:27:56 PM
I didn't go to a band camp, I went to fundamentalist lutheran camp and it was a lot of fun/also terrifying. Marching band practice in the summer was nothing like the movies and was grueling
Brian D 4:28:54 PM
Eugene Levy getting some more notoriety i guess... but doesn't excuse those films
Colin 4:29:16 PM
