Dark Souls: i finished it without cheating once, but its brutal as you've heard, esp later on. Tips.....dont read spoilers. If you're ramming your head against a specfic enemy or area, maybe try going a different direction. Go slowly. Think samurai combat, not like most other games--each encounter can kill you. Mentally prepare what your moves are going to be. Do Not Spam Buttons Ever.

and yeah I've learned pretty quickly that button mashing does not work!

Just dont panic during a fight. The second you panic, you're going to die. You need to methodically beat enemies with your brains, not fast buttons. Be curious---there are secrets ALL AROUND YOU...some which will make finishing much easier. It's totally normal to have to go through a single area 30 times before you master it. Or more. I was in the opening town area for a week or two.\

Its like a boxing training or karate kid. You need to get beat down and bloody for MANY hours in order to learn the combat skills you'll need to have any hope of winning. Hence, guides will be...well...limited in use. You need to learn the way to fight by doing it, learning to not Mash, learning to think and anticipate, like a knight or a samauri.

Be curious though. The mystery and the darkness and the oddity---its supposed to feel like that. You arent "missing" anything, though it often feels that way. En media res, etc.

you CAN beat it without cheats or guides. It's doable--i promise. But will be a gaming achievement you never forget.

I spent two weeks of the pandemic getting very very worked up about trying to defeat a shirtless jerk of a boss in Fallen Order. Not my finest hour(s). Much yelling.

I am currently a bit stuck on the Nightmare King Grimm in hollow knight, but I can sense myself getting a little better each and every time, just got to persevere

to me, cheating is looking up anything online. To each their own though, enjoyment comes in many fashions, but for me, beating a hard game without getting assistance is the best reward. Gungeon became one of my all time favs (40 years into this hobby) last year when i got VERY near to 100% (i think) without a single cheat. DSouls the same, though i havent nearly 100% DSouls--i know of things ive missed, but dont know how to find them.

I've heard Hollow Knight is a pretty legendary souls-like-ish game, so maybe you have what it takes for DSouls!

yeah it's super brutal and kind of why i wanted ot try to dark souls since i loved hollow knight

i have gungeon but havent played it yet! i like to finish a game before i move on to the next

Conversely, i look forward to Hollow Knight. I tend to play multiple games at once, im a true blue retro guy. Right now im "actively" playing hmmmmm Flinthook on Switch, Duke Nukem on Saturn, Resident Evil 3 on gamecube, World is not Enough on n64, and some japanese stuff on SNES. But i gotta go now, real life calls. Gungeon is a HUGE committment, but less said, the better, Like Souls, probably 10% of people actually see the credits. Less said the better. Good luck!
