The Elephant Man is a 1980 biographical drama film about Joseph Merrick, here called John Merrick, a severely deformed man in late 19th-century London. The film was directed by David Lynch and stars John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon, and Freddie Jones. It was produced by Mel Brooks (who was uncredited, so audiences wouldn't see his name and expect a comedy) and Jonathan Sanger. (from wikipedia)

@ Esoterica (host) Another marvelous installment in your informative -- and, of course, entertaining! -- series. I'm afraid I've missed at least one program ... Have you played anything from the 1957 jazz album Dave Digs Disney by the Dave Brubeck Quartet? They're simply fabulous on jazz arrangements of melodies from Disney feature films. A standout: "Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho" from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, pianist Brubeck plays a ONE NOTE SOLO VARIATION. If you don't know it, check it out!
David Shortell 3:35:39 PM
I bought “I'm A Bear In A Lady's Boudoir”, a compilation of Prohibition-era recordings by Ukelele Ike (Cliff Edwards). It was the R. Crumb illustration on that Yazoo LP that enticed me. Sometime in the late 90’s, I saw the title track performed by the Asylum Street Spankers at the Brighton Bar. Alas, they never returned to NJ.

Mention “Singin’ In the Rain” and most people will think of Gene Kelly in the 1952 movie, but Ukelele Ike sang the original hit in 1929.
Esoterica (host) 3:45:56 PM
wow, cool info, david!
Richard D. Smith 3:45:59 PM
@ Rob M As I recall, Mel Brooks, co-producer Jonathan Sanger and director David Lynch agreed that "The Elephant Man" would have much greater emotional impact if shot in black & white. But back then (1980), although independent movies were still routinely shot with the 16mm film size format, finding a processing lab that could still reliably handle the large Hollywood-style formats (I think in this case 70mm) was quite a task! But the result was striking and well worth the time and risk!
Richard D. Smith 3:47:40 PM
@ David Shortell Thanks for that "Singin' in the Rain" and the shout-out to the great Ukulele Ike!
Esoterica (host) 3:49:25 PM
richard, the black & white is so crucial to the storytelling and atmospheric effect for the elephant man.

@ Esoterica (host) Cool, I think you'll dig Dave Digs Disney! I seem to recall reading an article about that classic album saying that when it came out in 1957, many jazz critics snorted in derision at Brubeck having anything to do with such "low brow" entertainment as Walt Disney -- ignoring the host of fabulously talented composers who'd created those Disney movie themes in the first place.

@ Esoterica (host) So, THANK YOU! for playing "Peace Frog" from Morrison Hotel. What's rather sad about it, by that time the booze had really gotten hold of Jim and he just wasn't writing much good (if any) stuff. So the other guys were going through his old notebooks for fragments to turn into songs. As I recall, someone read a snippet about "Blood in the streets, it's up to my ankles ..."
