Mehdi Hassan - Yaro Kisi Qatil Se Kabhi (Live)
Mehdi Hassan Yaro Kisi Qatil Se Kabhi (Live)
Mehdi Hassan in Concert, Vol.1 & 2 (Live) EMI (Pakistan) Ltd. 2013

Mehdi Hassan Khan (18 July 1927 – 13 June 2012) was a Pakistani ghazal singer. He was born in a village named Luna, in present day Rajasthan. He showed an early inclination towards music, and received training from his family in the dhrupad style of Hindustani music, as well as Dadra, thumri and khayal. After the partition of India in 1947, his family migrated to Pakistan.

62bf467107cde.jpg

The ghazal form is ancient, tracing its origins to 7th-century Arabic poetry. The ghazal spread into South Asia in the 12th century due to the influence of Sufi mystics and the courts of the new Islamic Sultanate. The central themes are love and separation. Mehdi Hassan's presentation is similar to a thumri, but ghazals place much more emphasis on lyrics.

Good morning, and welcome to Sangeet.
TAndy 9:06:30 AM
Good morning sir
Sangeet Team (host) 9:06:55 AM
Good morning, TAndy.
TAndy 9:12:54 AM
A very warm morning to you too, Dave. It was soupy last night, for the first time it felt better inside than out.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:14:12 AM
Indeed. And watch out for scattered thunderstorms later on today. % chance.
TAndy 9:19:51 AM
I'll be asleep, hopefully the power doesn't go on vacation. Was considering the beach tomorrow morning but still a slight chance of lightning, so I don't wanna risk it.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:20:55 AM
⛈ Wise decision.
TAndy 9:30:02 AM
Maybe I'll go to the flea market instead 🤔 and perhaps the shore on Monday. Yes it will be busy but maybe I'll just go later in the day. I never get to drive home during From The Notebook anyway :)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:32:45 AM
That's a reasonable plan.
DSM 9:34:41 AM
Good morning Dave and TAndy. Loved that Milind Raikar and use of violin
Sangeet Team (host) 9:36:28 AM
Good morning, DSM. Milind Raikar is great, but his recordings are not easily found.
TAndy 9:37:07 AM
Good morning DSM. And yes, that violin was lovely. At times it felt like I was picking up some Irish/Celtic classical from it as well, for some reason.
DSM 9:39:25 AM
Hard to find is why WPRB is the best : )
Sangeet Team (host) 9:39:48 AM
TAndy, that's why they say music is the universal language.
TAndy 9:40:33 AM
🎶☺️💙
Sangeet Team (host) 9:41:35 AM
Indeed, DSM. Even among specialists like me, sometimes it's just luck finding things. Major music labels often do not risk recording lesser known artists.
TAndy 9:43:15 AM
WPRB is such a value. I think I remember seeing during Marvin's New Years special, or around then, he had a whole chunk of songs that were private recording only. WPRB exclusive :)
Sangeet Team (host) 9:44:50 AM
Marvin is a real treasure. He has built a reputation so composers know he will give their music a fair listen and broadcast.
TAndy 9:49:14 AM
💙 Similarly... I know very little of Jazz, but the names of some of the message sponsors that Dan B. recorded for his drive show surprised even Jerry G. And of course Side B radio, part of the whole legendary lineage of Hip-Hop programming the station was known for! WPRB = 🎁
TAndy 9:50:31 AM
The only station where one can listen to classical canartic tunes during breakfast, then at bedtime enjoy some fuzzy psych-rock courtesy of CJ.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:51:05 AM
The connections these guys have is just astounding.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:53:06 AM
@TAndy, you mean MMR does not play blocks of MS Subbulakshmi?
Sangeet Team (host) 9:54:47 AM
No double-shots of Bhimsen Joshi?
DSM 9:56:26 AM
I'm always impressed when I hear the spot with Ice-T "cold lounging" on WPRB
Sangeet Team (host) 9:57:18 AM
And whenever Queen Latifa is in Princeton...
TAndy 9:57:35 AM
I wish I could have been around for that era of PRB. Luckily most of those old rap programs are recorded and available to listen on an archival site :)
Ram Ramaprasd 10:02:28 AM
How about a Chai shop in Princeton, where the different teas are named after ragas. Not musicians, because of copyright problems
Sangeet Team (host) 10:04:23 AM
Maybe a start of a new career for me! ☕️
Sangeet Team (host) 10:04:35 AM
Good morning, Ram.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:05:13 AM
I can stand outside yelling "chai chai chai", just like at the train stations.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:05:31 AM
Good Morning, Dave
Ram Ramaprasd 10:06:09 AM
No tea without that being in some recognizable taal.
TAndy 10:08:05 AM
Good morning Ram 😁
Ram Ramaprasd 10:08:06 AM
In many parts of North India, as you might have found out, they serve chai earthen ware cups. You drink and throw out the the cup. Back to the earth. No pollution and no spread of germs
Sangeet Team (host) 10:09:43 AM
I've had that, yes.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:10:34 AM
If only Starbucks would start that.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:11:13 AM
The streets would be full of tan shards from broken clay cups.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:12:47 AM
i can't get this right. Pot hole filler LOL
DSM 10:13:52 AM
smashing a cup would be a bold start to the day haha
Sangeet Team (host) 10:14:26 AM
There is something satisfying in smashing those little clay cups.
GueloLove 10:19:54 AM
Good Morning! I would love some chai...
TAndy 10:20:11 AM
[A deep final sip, ended with a loud slurp and a sharp inhale] Ahhh, that was a good cup of tea! I'm ready to siese the day! [The cup is raised, then thrown egregiously to the ground]
Ram Ramaprasd 10:20:53 AM
Rest well, TAndy
Sangeet Team (host) 10:21:45 AM
Good morning, Guelo.
TAndy 10:23:44 AM
Good morning Guelo, and thanks Ram! I should be asleep in an hour or so, whenever the sleep timer on my radio activates. Till then, it's Sangeet time ☺️
Sangeet Team (host) 10:24:23 AM
Gueol, proper chai is not widely available. The Starbucks chai is over-spiced and over-sweetened.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:24:49 AM
I have occasionally got some decent chai at Indian restaurants.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:33:03 AM
This raga has been over-sung, including the composition "Vatapapi Ganapathim"
Sangeet Team (host) 10:36:32 AM
True. It seems every artist has recorded that one.
GueloLove 10:38:47 AM
I had some great chai in Kuwait before a transfer flight... strangely I don't remember having any in India... must have though. Definitely no clay cups :/
GueloLove 10:39:21 AM
...its ok to miss some expereinces, it brings you back ;D
Sangeet Team (host) 10:40:26 AM
Clay cups are more common in roadside stalls and such places that don't have kitchens where they can wash glassware.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:41:15 AM
So, not in regular restaurants and hotels.
GueloLove 10:45:24 AM
It shant fly under my radar again... can tell you that
GueloLove 10:45:39 AM
Drum tuning so nice.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:46:06 AM
Pakhawaj. The drum of choice for dhrupad.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 10:59:28 AM
Good morning! BAM!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:00:40 AM
Good morning, Chef!
Ram Ramaprasd 11:07:12 AM
have to go, Dave. Have a nice res-of-the-show
Sangeet Team (host) 11:08:10 AM
Thanks for dropping in, Ram. Enjoy the holiday weekend.
Ram Ramaprasd 11:09:30 AM
You too
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 11:28:53 AM
That was something else! Was wondering what that specific instrument sound was - interesting!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:30:37 AM
Debashish Bhatacharya is astounding. I love the look of his modified guitars.
Ossy Hyouka 11:33:11 AM
Morning all on July Holiday weekend!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:33:50 AM
Good morning, Ossy!
jimbeaux 11:49:08 AM
Thank you DTO!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:50:13 AM
Good morning, Jimbeaux. Thanks for dropping in.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:56:21 AM
I'll be back on the air tomorrow morning at 7:00, subbing for "wired academic".
GueloLove 11:56:46 AM
Great show, Tankyu
Sangeet Team (host) 11:57:53 AM
I'm glad you were able to catch the show, Guelo.
Ossy Hyouka 12:00:32 PM
Happy 4th!
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:33 PM
Thanks, folks. See you here next week.
