It has become a famous song in the jazz world.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:05:45 PM
Just you and me today, Brian!
Brian D 12:06:28 PM
Spelling ending in "-ance" on this one will probably get the playlist to update. Perseverance.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:07:13 PM
Software spelling!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:11 PM
Try it now, if you can
Brian D 12:08:34 PM
Same. Must not be known as well to the computer gremlins
Brian D 12:09:10 PM
Oh well... Sounds great! Like that bass groove and the sax on top
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:09:48 PM
It's the bassplayer's CD, I never heard of him before. I agree, this is killer
Brian D 12:10:16 PM

PDQ Mok 12:16:48 PM
Im feeling Tom Petty'ish today
PDQ Mok 12:17:26 PM
That is weird the way that itunes sync works.
Christine 12:17:40 PM
Hey Jerry, Mok, Brian, & MrMalcontent 💀!
PDQ Mok 12:17:41 PM
I get it for backup purposes but it seems extreme
PDQ Mok 12:17:59 PM

Greetings - Nice guitar
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:22:23 PM
Hi Rob, yeah, post-Hendrix
Christine 12:22:48 PM
That groovy flute track reminded me strongly of the classic "Ponta de Lanca African (Umbabarauma)" that Pethie played yesterday. ⚽
Christine 12:23:30 PM
By Jorge Ben (Luaka Bop records). Classic.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:24:27 PM
Interesting. The name of Shabaka's album is Afrikan Culture. He is British. Could have been an influence! I will check out this Jorge Ben album, thank you!
Christine 12:28:45 PM
Shabaka's going on The List!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:29:29 PM
He is at the very top of the British jazz scene. A leader and innovator.
Stephen Higgins 12:30:10 PM
Afternoon Jerry. Looking forward to some awesome music to get me through my workday! Beautiful day in the Philly Burb's!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:30:43 PM
Hey Stephen, will do. What general vicinity of the burbs are you in?
Christine 12:30:59 PM
It's that time....theme song! 🐦🎶
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:31:14 PM
Yeah!!!
Marcus Watt 12:31:56 PM
Hi, Jerry. I'm in Lansdowne. I loved Third St. Jazz and Evidence Records.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:32:43 PM
Hey Marcus, thanks! Appreciate it. I used to spend every Sunday evening at my grandparents in Collingdale.

TIGRAN HAMASYAN 💎💙
Stephen Higgins 12:36:54 PM
I'm in Glenside. Couple blocks from the Keswick Theater!
Guelo 12:39:05 PM
Great so far Jerry! Eric Reed really blew me out of the water there.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:39:54 PM
Oh yeah, Stephen, beautiful!
Christine 12:40:00 PM
Glenside is a nice place; I used to live there. I miss the Blue Comet. ☄️Closed for a year now.
Christine 12:40:32 PM
Sometimes Michelle Lordi & her band plays at Roberts Block.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:40:53 PM
Guelo, that is the most beautiful version of that song I have ever heard
Marcus Watt 12:43:36 PM
Looking forward to the Grachan tribute.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:44:04 PM
I'm glad, Marcus, such great music
Rob F 12:45:28 PM
That Caesar Frazier track was good
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:45:49 PM
Glad you liked it, Rob, good CD!
Stephen Higgins 12:46:26 PM
Yup, The Blue Comet used to be a great place! It's now just a typical "Coors Lite" sports bar. Nothing special. Yes, in fact I went and saw Michelle at Robert's after hearing Jerry interview her on his show in 2019. It was right before the pandemic started. She played Robert's and a week or two later...the world shut down! All those places are within walking distance of my house. We love Glenside!!
Rob F 12:48:12 PM
Christian Sands in playing tomorrow 8pm at McCarter Theatre in Princeton
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:51:30 PM
Stephen, Christine, a million years ago I had a girlfriend who lived in a house across from a park a couple blocks from the Blue Comet but it didn't exist then. Loved the area. Then worked a couple blocks from there 5 years ago. Love Glenside. The neighborhoods feel safe
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:52:03 PM
Rob, I didn't know that. Are you going?
Rob F 12:53:17 PM
I'm hoping to go, but have not got a ticket yet. Looks like still plenty of seats
Guelo 12:55:13 PM
Gene W does pretty good but I think I’d have to agree. Also thanks Rob for the local concert heads up
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:18 PM
Yes, you can't beat the original!
Marcus Watt 1:00:29 PM
McCarter Theater brings back a memory. In high school I saw a production of Godot there. 1977. Good memory.
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:01:07 PM
@ Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) Great selections today, as always. I'm especially enjoying this Jason Palmer track. Don't know much about him, must check him out further. Thanks.
Marcus Watt 1:01:35 PM
Correction, 1973.
Guelo 1:01:48 PM
Did you play something off this record last week…? So good. Jazz fire energy.
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:02:34 PM
CORRECTION! It's Nduduzo Makhathini. That's what happens when you walk out of the room and away from the playlist! LOL
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:02:43 PM
No, this is my first time playing it. yes to your description!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:03:00 PM
Hi Richard!
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:04:10 PM
@ Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) Very impressive track, thanks.
Christine 1:05:31 PM
Nduduzo Makhathini twice in one day! Dave the Obscure played a track from this album too. Gotta buy this one.

Marcus Watt 1:12:20 PM
Grachan and Roswell were the best.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:14:14 PM
Right on, Marcus! Richard, it's nice to see people continue to grow as music listeners and explore different types of music as well as you do
PDQ Mok 1:18:36 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:25:23 PM
Yes, I was able to get my folk "ya yas" out and had too much good stuff left over
Christine 1:26:33 PM
Sunday's show was so much fun!
Russell Woessner 1:30:15 PM
I was fortunate to see Grachan Moncur III at a two day festival dedicated to the music of Eric Dolphy in Montclair NJ in May 2014. Great music and wonderful to see Moncur! Thanks for the tribute, Jerry.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:30:20 PM
Thanks, Christine.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:31:21 PM
Impressive, Russ!
Christine 1:33:54 PM
@Mok, "Mok in Wonderland" could be a future variant for you.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:34:32 PM
Haha, brilliant!
PDQ Mok 1:35:20 PM
*taking notes* 🙂
Marcus Watt 1:40:03 PM
With luck, maybe the great Dave Burrell is listening.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:41:20 PM
I forgot to mention the musicians ahead of time for this track. Yes, the greatest, Dave Burrell on piano
Bud Burroughs 1:48:18 PM
I haven't listened to a lot of Moncur, but I'm realizing I need to. Those were a couple fantastic tracks!
David Shortell 1:50:17 PM
“My name is Mok, thanks a lot. I know you love the thing I got. You've never seen the likes of me. Why, I'm the biggest thing since World War III.” –Mok Swagger
PDQ Mok 1:50:30 PM
im in the same boat. Moncur is new to me.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:51:42 PM
Hi Bud, I was running out of time and didn't play another album that I had planned. The album is called Exploration which came out in 2004. Highly recommended.
Bud Burroughs 1:53:28 PM
Thanks, I'll look that up! I actually keep a running list of stuff that I hear (mostly on WPRB) that I want to dig into.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:30 PM
Moncur had dental problems and I guess it affected his embrochure. He had been teaching and writing but not recording for 20 years
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:56 PM
Then he came out with the one I just mentioned
Bud Burroughs 1:55:40 PM
I love when a legendary musician is able to come out with a later great record. Like that Pharaoh Sanders collaboration from a couple years ago, for example.
PDQ Mok 2:05:24 PM
Zim Bobertman

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:09:33 PM
Ha!
Brian D 2:10:43 PM
Great to hear Smither version there !
PDQ Mok 2:11:11 PM
last time I saw Zim was ages ago. I think maybe 2001'ish in Canada somewhere
Christine 2:11:48 PM
This mood 💯
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:13:08 PM
Chris Smither, Tracy Nelson...the best!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:14:23 PM
A threesome that didn't work out!
Brian D 2:17:29 PM
Smither to Withers! Bromberg doing Withers nice!
David Shortell 2:19:11 PM
The first time I heard of Tracy Nelson was reading Bruce Pollock’s 1984 book “When the Music Mattered: Rock in the 1960s”. There was a whole chapter on her.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:19:47 PM
What a character. I wonder if the segue was unconcious because of the rhyme!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:22 PM
David Shortell...Mother Earth!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:46 PM
OK, we got a good one coming up for you
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:21:00 PM

I adore Tracy Nelson. Her version of 'Down So Low' is unbelievably great.
Christine 2:26:05 PM

Marcus Watt 2:28:19 PM
John Osborne is pretty good too.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:28:49 PM
Haha, Marcus, you have excellent taste. You must be an old head.
Marcus Watt 2:28:59 PM
Aka Ozzy.
Christine 2:30:39 PM
Lol @Marcus. "Pretty good"
Christine 2:33:37 PM

Marcus Watt 2:34:02 PM

PDQ Mok 2:36:17 PM
Ozzy is having major surgery
PDQ Mok 2:38:10 PM
Jerry has quite a thing for Bonnie🥰
Marcus Watt 2:38:36 PM
It was WMMR.
Marcus Watt 2:40:51 PM
Probably Ed Sciakey hosting.
Brian D 2:41:36 PM
Yeah i used to have that exact Bonnie live radio show on cassette . And another tape from later in her career (late 80s) where someone requested "Let me be your blender... " . Bonnie said no thanks, I haven't performed that in years. For a while there I stated getting billed as "Bonnie Blender " ha. So she put that one to bed . Moved on...
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:41:38 PM
Yes, Mok, that track was hot. But I culd give you a list.
Russell Woessner 2:43:00 PM
Bonnie Raitt will be at the Mann next week.
Russell Woessner 2:43:07 PM

Brian D 2:43:28 PM
I had the early 70s gig on tape much later on in the late 80s early 90s. I was not aware of the orig mmr broadcast as I was only 3 yrs old then.
Brian D 2:45:01 PM
Shows that Bonnie was still hip in the tape trading circles years later. This was just before the big "comeback" lp w the "...Talk About " hit.
Russell Woessner 2:46:36 PM
Sweet Stavin’ Chain!

Is this Iris?
Russell Woessner 2:48:27 PM

PDQ Mok 2:50:00 PM

PDQ Mok 2:50:44 PM
down the rabbit hole I go
Russell Woessner 2:50:46 PM
Does that make my offspring a son-of-a-hippie?
Marcus Watt 2:50:51 PM
Sweet Stavin' Chain was the first band I ever saw. They opened for Mott the Hoople and headliner Ten Years After in 1970.
Brian D 2:51:46 PM
