Brian D 1:52:57 PM
I'll shout out Richard's book again too! "Can't You Hear Me Callin': The Life of Bill Monroe, Father of Bluegrass". Going on my 4th or 5th trip through that soon!
Richard from Rocky Hill 1:53:07 PM
@ Esoterica (host) Of course, there's even more of a bluegrass/Doors connection here: On The Soft Parade, in the song "Runnin' Blue," is a bluegrassy bridge featuring guest artists mandolin great Jesse McReynolds and superb fiddler Jim Buchanan.
Esoterica (host) 1:53:43 PM
i will def get your book, richard! interesting stuff
Brian D 1:54:22 PM
About to do Shakey for 3rd or 4th time too
Brian D 1:55:46 PM
Glad i got to see Jim and Jesse once. And Jesse again a couple times at the fests.

Richard from Rocky Hill 2:00:32 PM
@ Brian D Humble but happy thanks, Brian! Much appreciated! As it turns out the current (June '22) Bluegrass Unlimited magazine is a special California bluegrass issue. And I wrote the cover story on Chris Hillman, formerly of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, et al, but who started as -- and remains -- a serious (and very skilled) bluegrasser (mandolin picker, songwriter, vocalist).
Brian D 2:01:20 PM
There's no right or wrong. Just the most common for him and his fam yes is "min-ROE"
ѕтєνιє ρ 2:01:42 PM

Esoterica (host) 2:01:54 PM
no stevie p!!
unoclay 2:01:59 PM
moby dick is...interesting. I loved it better when i was younger, now im going to explore it again. Feel free to skip the really long winded didactic sections that are over-wordy descriptions of sea life or whaling---skip to the fun and weird stuff. Its a very strange book. Melvile was supposedly straight white guy but you will quickly question it, makes for fun reading
Brian D 2:04:02 PM
Did you ever hear the recordings from the Golden State Bluegrass Festival Richard? I think that is where the famous Jerry Garcia, John McEuen & Steve Martin all w banjos picture was taken. The entire fest audio from the soundboard was floating around the net years ago. All star performers. 1973 ior 74
David Shortell 2:04:10 PM
Frankie and the Witch Fingers will play at the Saint on July 30.
Esoterica (host) 2:04:34 PM
what? ! tell mike lupica! the saint in asbury?
unoclay 2:04:39 PM
you should also naturally be prepared for some 19th century un-woke imperialist/racist views that permeate any white dude's writing from that era (aka "savages, etc".) Not great stuff but you get the sense that Melvile meant well.
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:04:43 PM
@ Esoterica (host) and @ Brian D A big ol' country "Much appreciated!" to you both. Shameless self promotion here ... https://www.bluegrassunlimited.com The May issue is still featured on the website but it should flip to June very soon.

I am reading Thomas Berger's "Little Big Man" now. Yes as in the Hoffman as 111 year old man film. Very interesting.
unoclay 2:06:16 PM
that movie sounds hilarious. 9% on rotten tomatoes per Wiki
Brian D 2:06:21 PM
Really been enjoying Berger
Esoterica (host) 2:07:34 PM
wow need to read berger too! that film is part of my childhood
Brian D 2:07:37 PM
I remember other kids talking about Orca.. the film back in the 1970s! Jaws bandwagon.
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:07:54 PM
@ Brian D No, I must admit, I've never heard those Golden State Bluegrass Festival recordings. Are they still bootlegged only, or out legit?
David Shortell 2:09:00 PM
I think "Soft Parade" was the song I saw the Doors play (or mime to) on a repeat of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour televised not long ago.
ѕтєνιє ρ 2:09:30 PM
Orca is hilarious. Synopsis: Richard Harris offends a killer whale. Said whale seeks revenge. Harris lives in shack over water on pier near Orca's home. Complications ensue.
Brian D 2:10:20 PM
Berger wrote "Neighbors" as in Aykroyd Belushi film. Great book. And another book "Meeting Evil" that was apparently made into a film last decade w Sam Jackson and Luke Wilson. Another hard to put down book! One of those "all in one really bad luck filled days" stories.
Esoterica (host) 2:11:26 PM

David Shortell 2:12:56 PM
The description of "Spirit of '76" (starring the Redd Kross brothers) made me want to see it, but it was truly wretched!
Brian D 2:12:59 PM
Richard: they were passed around the 'net for free, never officially realeased. The modern day equivalent of cassette tape trading. Shame it wasn't released . GSB was a great fest from what I've read
Esoterica (host) 2:13:05 PM
lol david, now i need to look it up
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:15:03 PM
@ unoclay Hear, hear! and Spot on! in your Moby Dick critique, re: "Feel free to skip the really long winded didactic sections that are over-wordy descriptions of sea life or whaling---skip to the fun and weird stuff." That was PRECISELY my reaction when I read it (once only) ... Awww, not ANOTHER stirring paean to the American whaling industry filling the lamplights of the world! Didn't they already invent editors in 1851 to (you'll pardon the expression) harpoon Leviathan-fat literary excess?
Richard from Rocky Hill 2:15:48 PM
@ Brian D Thanks
Christine 2:16:31 PM
@David, thanks for the info re: F&TWF in Asbury Park on 7/30! Plans are being formed as I type...
Brian D 2:16:56 PM
Berger has dialog in some of his books that remind me of the manner that Ignatious Riley speaks (the main character in John Kennedy Toole's book Confederacy of Dunces). That over - the -top way of speaking. Inflated diction, full of oneself etc. The character Earl in Neighbors especially (Belushi's role)
Brian D 2:18:04 PM
Such a classic here
David Shortell 2:18:20 PM
I never saw the movie "Neighbors". The book "Wired" says Belushi pissed off his musical composer friend into quitting. That's why the score wound up so atrocious.
Brian D 2:18:33 PM
Big Star guitar tones.... heavenly.
unoclay 2:19:56 PM

Brian D 2:21:35 PM
Hmmm not quite David. Belushi wanted the punk band Fear to do the soundtrack. The studio balked. Hired Bill Conti of Rocky fame. And Rocky director Avildsen was on that film too . Belushi and Aykroyd did not agree w Avildsen's approach. They wanted to take control. Studios... The biz...
Esoterica (host) 2:22:08 PM
aw thx, mr. m!
David Shortell 2:23:23 PM
Was C.O.D. ever made into a movie? Toole's other book "The Neon Bible" was, but I fell asleep in the Quad Cinema watching it. I tried watching it on my TV later and fell asleep again.
Brian D 2:24:28 PM
But i see what you mean now that i read more. Their Blues Brothers buddy Tom Scott was supposed to do the score and the studio replaced him
Brian D 2:25:24 PM
Fear was supposed to have a song in the film but again the studio said no. Then Belushi got them a gig on SNL
HJG 2:26:17 PM

The SNL with Fear was also John's final appearance on the show. Just a brief silent walk-on in the cold opening. I haven't seen it in over 40 years!
Brian D 2:29:45 PM
Uno.. i am bad with the whole "best" and "first" thing ha ha... I obsessively read/ listen/ watch jyst about everything. according to google and reddit, people have actually asked the creators if CBGuy is actually based on Ignacius.
Brian D 2:39:48 PM
Little Big Man definitely has humor! But funniest maybe Houseguest and Neighbors... they all have good dark humor! Again I'm not good with lists or -est superlatives etc. They are all fun.
