Good morning!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:10:43 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Good morning! I'm groovin' on all that jazz!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:10:55 AM
Glad to hear it Richard!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:14:43 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Say, "Breakfast Feud" was outstanding. Those guys Bennie Goodman, Count Basie and Charlie Christian sounded real, real good. Whatever happened to them?
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:15:07 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) JUST KIDDIN'!!! ;-))
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:16:16 AM
:)
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:16:57 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Seriously ... to hear three true giants of jazz on the same track ... myohmy! ... Moments like that are why I tune into Blues Off The Record. Solid, man, thanks!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:18:03 AM
It's a great track! Not bad after Bix Beiderbecke with Eddie Lang either...
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:20:46 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Not bad at all! In addition to the fab music, it's good to be reminded these artists knew each other and worked together in their early days.
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:29:57 AM
When Charlie Patton in "Jersey Bull Blues" that his bull "has a horn long as my arm," I'm thinking this is not a "horn" on the bull's head ... ;-))
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:31:27 AM
Don't tell the authorities!
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:31:35 AM
;)
TAndy 10:39:10 AM
Beautiful day and beautiful music to wake up to, good morning everyone 😁
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:41:13 AM
@ TAndy Yep, the blues we're wakin' up to today include blue skies
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:42:17 AM
After so many days of wind and rain.... high water everywhere. But always remember... the sun's gonna shine in your back door someday!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:43:09 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) The killer guitar playing by Lockwood Jr, Carter and Harris on the last three tracks ... wow ...
Brian D 10:43:43 AM
I like hearing the early version of this railroad worker tune that Taj Mahal used later for Linin" Track
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:44:11 AM
@ Richard -- Bo Carter is a highly underrated and always inventive guitarist
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:44:37 AM
Love these Leadbelly recordings with the quartet
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:47:49 AM
@ Brian D One album notes writer (I forget his name, sorry) pointed out that Leadbelly's recordings with the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet are among his finest because he had to sing his best to keep up with such a polished and versatile vocal group.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:55:53 AM
Jimmy Wilson pretty blatantly copying some T-Bone walker licks here
Brian D 11:01:35 AM
T-Bone Walker gtr playing = so smooth
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:03:42 AM
BESAFERX... ooops
Brian D 11:05:33 AM
Drum groove and howling answer vocals on this Witherspoon Ain't No Secret wow... great stuff

Well, another example of church/gospel music being repurposed for secular blues/pop. Jimmy Witherspoon's "It Ain't No Secret" is obviously written off "It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)" , like Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" started musical life as "I Got A Savior." Must be a multitude of other examples, which SBW3 knows much better than me. Jimmy Witherspoon It Ain't No Secret
Brian D 11:10:00 AM
Besa Fer. X hmmm could mean "kiss king Ferdinand the 10th"

Sonny Boy III (host) 11:12:13 AM
Richard -- the one I talked about last week was "My Babe" and "This Train"
Brian D 11:12:32 AM
Shares some lyric themes with Someday Baby that last one (Merriwether Things Have Changed)
David Shortell 11:13:09 AM
I haven't seen "Georgia" (starring Jennifer Jason Leigh) since it played in a theater 27 years ago. I'm only reading now that Jimmy Witherspoon acted in it.
Brian D 11:13:34 AM
Love the spooky "thud " rhythm sound of this era Lightnin'
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:13:36 AM
Maceo's Worried Life Blues is often cited as the inspiration for Someday baby
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:14:11 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Oh, right! "This Train" => "My Babe," I'd forgotten, thanks for reminding me.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:15:08 AM
Though they may both be off a melody from a folk song... Froggy Went A-Courtin' I think? There are surely other examples too -- secular music rewritten for the church.
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:15:13 AM
@ David Shortell Very interesting, thanks for that.
Brian D 11:20:00 AM
Love this style of slide
Brian D 11:28:08 AM
Love that Muddy Chess Box. That was my first time that i could really delve into many diff eras of his output. I was aware of only a few tracks here and there. But when they started putting out those Chess boxsets in the 80s-90s that opened up a whole big world
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:29:33 AM
The chess boxes are great and the Muddy Waters one is the king of them all
David Shortell 11:29:47 AM
I just heard that Judy Henske died on April 27. Some other station is playing a set of her work in tribute.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:33:38 AM
Rest in Peace!
David Shortell 11:40:29 AM
That movie "Cadillac Records" gave the impression that Muddy never recorded until he moved to Chicago, ignoring his older acoustic recordings made down south.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:42:48 AM
To be fair those earlier recordings were field recordings. But some were released commercially at the time they were made I believe...

DJ Sonny Boy Williamson III, thoroughly enjoyed the show, especially hearing you *enjoy* the PSA! Many thanks and big cheers and kind regards!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:44:32 AM
Thanks Malcontent!
Brian D 11:46:34 AM
Viola!
Brian D 11:59:26 AM
Loved today's show SBW3!
