Sirius the Dog Star is a white dwarf. It’s the brightest star visible to our naked eye, and the only one I can easily identify (except for the Sun).

Astronomers theorize that white dwarfs will eventually run out of light and become black dwarfs, but the universe isn’t old enough for that to have happened yet.

There was that old Star Trek episode where Kirk’s log mentions a “black star” that caught the Enterprise in its gravity field. It would’ve been better if the writer called it a “black hole” but most people never heard of those things in the 1960’s.

I saw an excellent production of David Ives’ two-person play “Venus in Fur” at the George Street Playhouse. I liked it so much, I couldn’t bring myself to see the movie version that came out later.

I read the 19th century novel “Venus in Furs” by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, after whom the word masochism was coined. His descendent Marianne Faithfull said the line “I must have been a masochist” in her movie “Girl On a Motorcycle”. That was almost metafictional!

I was disappointed by the lack of S/M activity in Masoch’s novel. Its cruelties were more psychological than physical. I might find more of the latter in his widow’s memoirs, published a decade after his passing. An English translation of “The Confessions of Wanda von Sacher-Masoch” was finally published in 1990 by Re/Search. I bought a copy last summer from a WFMU dj’s store at the Antique Emporium of Asbury Park, but I don’t know if I’ll ever read it.

I’ve been watching certain “Barney Miller” episodes lately: the Linda Lavin and Fish-centric episodes. The first time we see Fish’s home, he has a daughter who I don’t remember appearing in the spin-off series "Fish”.

A few years after the cancelation of “Fish”, he visits Barney Miller’s precinct and mentions what happened to its characters since then.

Madonna was on the list to play the part that went to Bridget Fonda in G3. I remember the press before the film was released mentioning Madonna.
