esoterica! 10:39:44 AM

Sonny Boy III (host) 10:42:09 AM
looks like May 1960 in NYC for Fire records at Beltone Studios
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:42:51 AM
Eddie Kirkland had done a version on Fortune Records in Detroit before him. I think James version is the basis for the Allman Brother's version on Live at Fillmore
esoterica! 10:47:56 AM
Thanks for the info!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:51:22 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) G'morning to you & all. Glad the pledge drive was so successful! :-))
esoterica! 10:52:14 AM
hi richard, good morning.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:52:26 AM
Thanks Richard! It's all thanks to devoted listeners like you and Brian, plus great DJs like Esoterica!
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:54:53 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Thanks for the opening set of country blues. This past Saturday nite in NYC I saw Dom Flemons "The American Songster" with special guest, banjo wizard Tony Trischka. Dom as you know has been a leader in the Black old timey/country string band music revival. And his blend of showmanship & scholarship leaves you delighted & educated.
Sonny Boy III (host) 10:55:12 AM
Very cool Richard! What was the venue?
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:56:24 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) So Black old-timey music has been on the soundtrack of my life LOL the last few days. It's really really good stuff, thanks for playing it here.
Brian "D" for Donor! 10:57:39 AM
Love John Hurt
Richard from Rocky Hill 10:59:55 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) The venue for the Flemons/Trischka show was a very historic one, as a matter of fact: the former Thalia Theatre at 95th & Broadway which was a legendary mecca for seeing great foreign and US indie cinema. It now has a new life as the "Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater" within the adjacent Symphony Space theater center.
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:00:42 AM
Dom Flemons solo lps are some of the best things that have come out in folk in past few decades. Saw him play with Carolina Chocolate Drops a few times when he was a member of that band.
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:04:08 AM
we did a drive give away of his black cowboys cd some years ago
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:05:15 AM
The big sound Dom and the few musicians get out of just a fife, drum & maybe 1-2 other instruments. Really booms
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:06:54 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) And mark your calendars (and buy your tickets), gang -- Dom Flemons will perform Labor Day weekend at the 50th Annual Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival in Woodstown, NJ. This well-run, high-quality & family-friendly festival always features a non-bluegrass but notable roots music-related act, and this year it's The American Songster.
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:07:39 AM
@ Brian "D" for Donor! Exactly right, Brian D.
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:09:03 AM
One of the best festivals ever ! A very comfortable, easy & affordable fest with the best acts young, old, in between and a few from all over the world
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:11:51 AM
@ Brian "D" for Donor! and Sonny Boy III (host) ... Yes indeed! And Dom Flemons is just one of a killer lineup at the DelVal Festival this year. Check it out:
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:12:19 AM
Oops! Here's the DelVal BG Fest link: https://delawarevalleybluegrass.org/
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:16:29 AM
I've seen so many greats there Doc Watson, Del McCoury, Jim and Jesse, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, Bob Paisley and family, Mike Cross , Norman Blake, Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen , Doyle Lawson, JD Crowe, Hot Rize, Tim O'Brien, Seldom Scene, Peter Rowan, Marty Stuart etc etc too many more... and bands from Canada, Italy , Sweden and more...
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:31:40 AM
@ Brian "D" for Donor! At the 2016 Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival the "bluegrass-friendly" act was Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen as a mandolin/guitar-playing and duet-signing twosome. You'll recall their finale was an acoustic duet arrangement of "Eight Miles High" the psychedelic anthem by the Byrds rock band (of which Hillman was a founding member on bass). When Chris played Roger McGuinn's famed electric guitar12-string solo note for note ON THE MANDOLIN I almost fell out of my lawnchair!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:33:47 AM
But now, friends & neighbors ... BACK TO THE BLUES!
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:37:33 AM
Sounds great! I missed a few years in the past decade or so. I saw Hillman Pedersen duet in early 2000s tho. Great time. Herb is a master harmony singer and acoustic rhythm gtr player as well as banjo. Saw him fill in for Jerry in the Old and in the Grey reunion at Grey Fox

Thanks Joe!
esoterica! 11:54:38 AM
Thx so much for this great show, SBIII!
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:55:58 AM
Thanks for listening!
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:57:15 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) Thanks muchly for playing the Butterfield live track from Newport Folk Festival 1965. And for pointing out the intro remarks that the Butterfield band had backed other acts that festival before Dylan (and apparently without controversy).
David Shortell 11:58:41 AM
Was that Mayall track live? Where was it recorded?
Sonny Boy III (host) 11:58:49 AM
Would like to know what other acts they backed... Wald's book would probably tell us
Richard from Rocky Hill 11:59:12 AM
@ Sonny Boy III (host) ... controversy about use of electric guitars and drums. I'm of the opinion thatg most people who booed Dylan with Butterfield were objecting because Bob's vocals were drowned out. A volunteer usher who was there told me that too.
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:59:41 AM
Great show SBW3!
Joe 11:59:42 AM
perfect ending !!
Brian "D" for Donor! 11:59:59 AM
Joseph Spence!
Richard from Rocky Hill 12:00:04 PM
On the sides of the audience, Dylan could be heard much better and no one was booing.
Sonny Boy III (host) 12:00:43 PM
@ David Shortell -- the LP does not provide that information unfortunately
Sonny Boy III (host) 12:02:54 PM
Thanks all! See you next week.
