He is an Indian violin prodigy who made his first public appearance at age 6. (His younger brother is violinist L. Shankar.) Dr. L. Subramaniam plays violin in the Carnatic style. Vishnu Govind Jog (22 February 1922 – 31 January 2004) was from Mumbai. He is credited for introducing violin in Hindustani music (although violin had been used in Carnatic music since the early-mid 1800s). |

Jog] Sangeet Sangam, Vol. II Viji Records 2011 According to textual references, the violin was first introduced into Carnatic music of south India in the court of Travancore during the regime of Maharajah Swati Tirunal (1813–1846). Vadivelu and Baluswami Dikshitar were acclaimed as the renowned performers on the violin. The violin was a direct import from Europe, but in India it differed in tuning, execution and presentation, and it adapted itself well to Indian music. In Carnatic music, the violin has established itself as the best possible melodic support for vocalists. |
