Welcome to Sangeet on WPRB. (Dave will be sitting in the chat room this morning instead of Jayashri.)
MusicChallenged 9:01:46 AM
Hi Dave - I have heard this by Sudha Raghunathan
Sangeet Team (host) 9:02:42 AM
Good morning, Music Challenged. I suppose that's why they call these compositions "classic".
Sangeet Team (host) 9:18:02 AM
Roshan Ara Begum (1917-1982) represented the Kirana gharana. She was born in Kolkata, and was a cousin of Abdul Karim Khan, founder of the Kirana gharana.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:21:24 AM
Brothers Salamat and Nazakat Ali Khan represent the Sham Chaurasi gharana, centered in Punjab.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:26:10 AM
All of us Sangeet hosts wish to thank everyone who contributed to WPRB's recent pledge drive! 🙏
Guelo La donadora 9:27:07 AM
its like my soul got happy when I realized that Sangeet is on :]
Sangeet Team (host) 9:27:25 AM
Same, Guelo!
Christine 🌒 9:37:38 AM
Good morning Dave the Obscure, Jayashri, Guelo, MusicChallenged & everyone 🌅
Sangeet Team (host) 9:38:33 AM
Good morning, Christine!
Christine 🌒 9:41:26 AM
How's everybody doing? What a wild ride the past 10 days have been; so many emotional moments during the member drive.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:44:24 AM
Speaking for myself, I'm doing well. There were indeed some exciting shows.
MusicChallenged 10:00:37 AM
Doing well @Christine
MusicChallenged 10:55:48 AM
Wow that was a long piece Jayashri just as you did announce.
MusicChallenged 10:56:00 AM
Gayathri is one my favorites
Sangeet Team (host) 10:56:45 AM
She is quite good.
MusicChallenged 10:57:12 AM
Yes Dave
Sangeet Team (host) 11:00:07 AM
I think she sang at Chinmaya Mission a few years ago. I picked up a couple of her recordings, but they are DVDs, making them hard to play on Sangeet.
Christine 🌒 11:02:24 AM
Really enjoyable selections @Jayashri.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:03:34 AM
I know I could convert the DVD on a computer, but... Time + Effort = Disincentive.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:13:01 AM
In the "before time", I brought my laptop with an external disc drive to the WPRB studios and played one of Gayathri's performances directly from the DVD. But that took some elaborate setting up.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:15:49 AM
What I don't understand is, if CDs and DVDs are basically the same size, why a DVD can hold so much more music PLUS images. Is the sound quality on a CD that much superior?
Sangeet Team (host) 11:29:10 AM
This recording has its own Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_the_Valley
Sangeet Team (host) 11:30:28 AM
It's one of the most successful Indian albums, and credited with introducing Indian Classical music to many westerners.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:50:07 AM
Back to the issue of DVDs. So since DVDs can have a soundtrack of over 2 hours, which also accommodates surround sound, not limited to 2 speakers, why can't new generation music systems use this technology to expand the length and dimension of regular music?
Ossy Hyouka 11:51:29 AM
Good Saturday morning all, a lovely blue, green, yellow weekend weather and atmosphere 💛 💚💙
Sangeet Team (host) 11:51:34 AM
Our CD players could be replaced by music DVD players with 4 or even 6 speakers.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:52:08 AM
Good morning, Ossy! Thanks for checking in. Yes, it is gorgeous outside.
Dan Ruccia 11:52:27 AM
Really enjoying these TR Subramanyam tracks!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:53:18 AM
Hello, Dan. Glad you can appreciate Carnatic vocal music. Most people do not.
MusicChallenged 11:53:54 AM
@Dave - even though they look the same there are some fundamental difference that enable the higher storage capability. I know DVD players that can handle CD also - I have one of them with me
MusicChallenged 11:54:54 AM
@Dan - I am trying to get my hand on TR's recording which is with his son who is in the Greater philly area. When it happens we have some more of that
Dan Ruccia 11:55:21 AM
The vocal/violin interplay is really great, especially as they get going. There's just so much wonderful energy there
Dan Ruccia 11:55:27 AM
Cool @MusicChallenged
Sangeet Team (host) 11:55:38 AM
MusicChallenged, I think it is time to exploit these superior DVD properties for musical purposes.
Christine 🌒 11:58:40 AM
Good point re: DVD musical storage capabilities, @Dave. 📀 Thank you @Jayashri & Sangeet team for providing the soundtrack for a reflective morning.
MusicChallenged 11:59:07 AM
@Dan - there are some pieces where all the artists on stage (typically 3 and upto 5) do that interplay in Indian Classical Music and it is fun.
MusicChallenged 11:59:53 AM
Agree Dave, but I would now go for SD card are it can store so much more in a very compact footprint
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:20 PM
Thanks, everyone, for joining the chat this morning. Until next week...
