Good morning, Music Challenged. I suppose that's why they call these compositions "classic".

Roshan Ara Begum (1917-1982) represented the Kirana gharana. She was born in Kolkata, and was a cousin of Abdul Karim Khan, founder of the Kirana gharana.

Brothers Salamat and Nazakat Ali Khan represent the Sham Chaurasi gharana, centered in Punjab.

How's everybody doing? What a wild ride the past 10 days have been; so many emotional moments during the member drive.

Speaking for myself, I'm doing well. There were indeed some exciting shows.

I think she sang at Chinmaya Mission a few years ago. I picked up a couple of her recordings, but they are DVDs, making them hard to play on Sangeet.

Really enjoyable selections @Jayashri.

I know I could convert the DVD on a computer, but... Time + Effort = Disincentive.

In the "before time", I brought my laptop with an external disc drive to the WPRB studios and played one of Gayathri's performances directly from the DVD. But that took some elaborate setting up.

What I don't understand is, if CDs and DVDs are basically the same size, why a DVD can hold so much more music PLUS images. Is the sound quality on a CD that much superior?

It's one of the most successful Indian albums, and credited with introducing Indian Classical music to many westerners.

Back to the issue of DVDs. So since DVDs can have a soundtrack of over 2 hours, which also accommodates surround sound, not limited to 2 speakers, why can't new generation music systems use this technology to expand the length and dimension of regular music?

Hello, Dan. Glad you can appreciate Carnatic vocal music. Most people do not.

@Dave - even though they look the same there are some fundamental difference that enable the higher storage capability. I know DVD players that can handle CD also - I have one of them with me

@Dan - I am trying to get my hand on TR's recording which is with his son who is in the Greater philly area. When it happens we have some more of that

The vocal/violin interplay is really great, especially as they get going. There's just so much wonderful energy there

@Dan - there are some pieces where all the artists on stage (typically 3 and upto 5) do that interplay in Indian Classical Music and it is fun.

Agree Dave, but I would now go for SD card are it can store so much more in a very compact footprint
