His shenanigans will be documented on the forthcoming KC doc, which is apparently all about drama with former band members fighting with Fripp, who wanted everyone to practice for a million hours to realize his vision. So yeah, this bird is aptly named and demanding. Good thing he’s cute and smart

At least we’re in a studio that doesn’t leak now. The original WPRB studio where I was for the first few years leaked AC condensation all over the M section of the music library!

Liz Bot - OMG! The friggin' student center?

I wish I had recorded most or at least SOME of my old shows, but there are precious few recordings of Doubleplusgood from the first 18 years. I used to tape it on cassette when we had the old dual deck in studio B, but if you didn’t remember to remove the tape in time, it would automatically flip over and start recording over side A.

I guess it took a pandemic to regularly record my show!

For a while pre-pandemic G used Audio Hijack his computer to record my show while I was in studio

I've always had the means to record my show and I'm still bad at doing it, even though people ask for it!

@Dana K - Some cover bands are a lot of fun. I have seen about a dozen sparks cover bands at a sparks cover band fest! A lot were great. Also, dorkily, I went to see The Musical Box at the Keswick and loved it. They did The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway with all the original costumes and slides and the singer sounded just like P Gabriel so I could feel like a was 12 again listening to that album and wishing I could’ve seen that show!

@Roffle - ha! Christmas I’m usually tired and dirty from being up way too late wrapping presents and making cookies and this year a dense AF ginger Guinness cake, and by the morning I am a wreck and REQUIRE that 42-minute Lindstrom shower to survive the holiday!

I’ve got double-holiday weekend Passover-Easter extravaganza, so everyone is just getting chocolate-dipped macaroons and they can just deal. And maybe chocolate apricots.

Lindstrom is always playing during the drive to my relatives' for brunch. Sadly they're just outside of broadcast range so it slowly deteriorates over the course of the ride .

@Dana K - Dunno. I haven’t looked recently. Thought about it when they were going on sale. There aren’t that many shows I’m excited for at the Mann this season, but I love the outdoors setting- always have but the Covid safety of it all is a welcome bonus

I have to actually look at what's happening this summer and get me some tickets. I've been putting off spending $90 on DEVO in NYC for next month.

Last year I bought the lowest level of Mann membership to get a discount on king crimson tickets for their “final” tour, so I had incentive to go to more shows there cuz of member discount. But I didn’t renew cuz I wasn’t blown away by what they had announced so far. Maybe better options coming in august and September…

Are you going to Roxy Music? I've seen some people dropping serious $$$$$ on that one.

@Dana K - Here’s the problem with that - DEVO, come to Philly! I have only seen them in NYC. I have to motivate myself to make a whole NYC weekend plan.

@Dana K - Probably not. I really like a select bit of Roxy Music output and could take or leave the rest so I don’t feel compelled to see them. My cousin, however, is a mega-fan so I have no doubt she’ll be there. I do get a kick out of Bryan Ferry’s general shenanigans though

Speaking of the Rapture and LCD Soundsystem, I saw that early 2000s nyc music scene doc at Sundance online in January. It was…something. Was not happy how the focus was too much on just a few bands we all heard from plenty already.

Yes, we both did! It was really incredible and emotional. There's some videos up on Youtube with me in the audience looking starstruck. Love her.

On a cheaper tip, she loves a singer from Norway who goes by Girl In Red and was squealing with anticipation for that show for months. It was a couple weeks ago at Union Transfer and she got all dressed up and had such a great time! She loves to dance at shows she’s excited about

I was 13 when I went to my first concert (sorta on my own) my dad drove us. pretty sure he hit up the pub while we were in the show. My mom is a folk musician, so i grew up going to concerts. the cure at the spectrum was my first with out family.

@jimbeaux- depends on the show. American Utopia wasn’t cheap, but we didn’t have to get tickets for more than one kid. Often times though the tickets alone for cheaper shows cost a lot less than a babysitter does!

@Dana K - Hattie has been massively obsessed with Girl In Red for a few years now, since the first EP. She has framed albums and t-shirts and the whole nine. She loves the “do you like girl in red” code

@Colin - hi! Yeah, I too grew up at folk shows. My parents are huge folkies so we went to a lot of festivals, saw my dad’s favorites a lot- Ritchie Havens at the Tin Angel many times, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger (ha, there exists somewhere in my parents’ house a photo of toddler me sitting on P seegar’s lap at an outdoor show) Dave van Ronk signed an album for me at the Left Bank. Most of the shows I saw were folk until I started going to shows myself

@liz, i'm out of the loop as far as babysitter costs, but i'm sure my mind would be blown with today's rates compared to the rates dished out when i was the one being babysat.

I too grew up going to folk shows with my dad (started attending the Folk Fest when I was 3). If my dad invites me out to see a show now, it's going to be folk. Sadly never got to see Dave Van Ronk, I think he was supposed to play the Fest the year he passed.

@Colin- I used to babysit neighborhood kids for $5 an hour when I was aged 12 through 18! I didn’t even want to but my mom was a teacher at the school half a block away from our house and rented me out to all the local parents. Now it costs decidedly more and there are fewer neighborhood kids that do it and more CPR-certified adults. Thankfully I have a lot of parents/in-laws for free babysitting nearby!

my mom is 81 and her and her friends still do a first friday folk sing. they rotate host's houses every month.

@Dana - He was actually super chatty and friendly when I met him, so I had a very positive impression of him. I was about 14 or 15. His speaking voice was the croakiest frog voice. My mom was like “don’t smoke!” after I walked away

they all get together and jam on the standards.

In an age of murder children I would surely charge a ton more for sure.

@Colin - My mom’s turning 80 this July, and my dad’s 83. They just went to see my dad’s longtime folk crush, Judy Collins, at the Scottish Rite a couple weeks ago

I specially make a point of telling my parents beforehand if I’m planning out a show that I know will be more to their liking, but I’ve long since learned not to cater to them musically or limit what I play so they’ll listen. But I give them loads of credit for always playing records all day every day and taking us to loads of shows and having some fairly weird stuff themselves, well mainly my dad, who has all those old Nonesuch experimental electronic and serialist records

Teach the children well! My kid has grown up on a constant diet of WPRB. Amongst other things this resulted in her knowing a ridiculous # of station IDs by heart.

My fam mostly listened to country, western, ethnic....nothing too wild.

My mom does not care for my music at all but will still listen in from time to time. I'll get texts from her asking why I'm not talking about the bands. It's cute.

@dana - im positive my mom has never heard of Green Day or no doubt. She isn’t even a boomer! She’s “Lucky Few,” pre-boomer. She does like some newer stuff, mostly in the folk realm, but she mainly just listens to the same 40 or so albums, whereas my dad is more adventurous.

my mom was born in 1963 but will insist she's Gen X

i have memories of when channel 12 would air old dead concerts and my dad would lower the lights, smoke the good smelling cigarets and crank that 20" zenith tv.

Jetty’s mom’s called led me to realize that our moms knew each other and I never realized they in touch for decades after they were camp counselors at the same Pine Barrens camp (Matolleonwquay) in the 60s

@Colin - When I was a kid and well into my teen years, channel 12 constantly out a dead concert for their In the Dark tour on as well as the Touch of Grey music video with the skeletons. My parents weren’t into the Dead, but left on PBS a lot, esp before we had cable

Japanese gentlemen, stand up please! Ever read the Sakamoto interview where he talks about how he didn’t like the playlist at his fav restaurant in NYC so he took it upon himself to make them a new one of stuff he’d enjoy hearing while eating and they use it now instead. That is one baller move

@Colin - I bought Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Techno Bible (compilation of his band Yellow Magic Orchestra) when I was a teen. It was a great decision!

Artists who’ve called about hearing their own music during my show: Gary Wilson and Monty from Symarip. Doug Milman of Chemicals Made of Dirt and Jim Whittemore of Scientific Americans and Chris Freeland of Oxxes emailed to thank me for playing their music, which was cool, but talking to GW was a trip. I had a dream of interviewing him in while he gave a tour of Endicott to point out all the spots he mentions in his songs

I've had a few emails and instagram messages...i think the most excited was a guy from the 80s Albany NY band The Verge

@Colin - yeah I think only a precious few can get away with that move! I wish I could do that! Ryuichi Sakamoto had apparently been eating there for years and they were very familiar with his music. He lives in NYC

@Dana K - yeah the emails/ messenger messages happen more than the calls (well obviously these days we cant get calls! I miss some of the regular callers who never made the switch to the chat.) had some good emails over the years, but those were the highlights for me. Gary Wilson is just such an enigmatic dude, it was funny hearing his voice. He played at Other Music and did a few nyc shows in a short span of time, all with the gauze wrapped around his face

i remember hearing about some of those shows in the 00s. i had a friend in high school who got me into them (one of the only guys from my high school who had a proper strange taste in music) was considering going.

in my head, arriving at the cat circus only to see the tent half clasped, all scratched and ripped to bits with the sounds of numerous cat fights going on.

simon turner was also the king of luxembourg and a member of the the...and a child actor...

@Colin- Accurate description. Cats bailed from the act and ran off into the audience multiple times. That was of course part of the appeal!
